FAQs
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I get straight to the point. The first session is more of an “interview” to develop an in-depth understanding of my student’s needs, wants, strengths, and weaknesses. We discuss their performance and opinions about each of their classes, how they are doing socially, and what their weekly activities consist of outside of school. I then build my lesson plans using input from the student and family members/guardians.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I earned a PhD in Biochemistry with the goal of working in private or federal institutions, but I fell in love with teaching. The training I received in my PhD program equipped me with the leadership, organizational, and communication skills necessary to excel as a scientist, but it also helped open my mind to thinking creatively when trying to solve challenging problems. This attitude is something I try to coach into my students because it is an essential life skill. I also received formal training in modern pedagogy.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I’ve had horrible teachers and I know what it feels like to be totally lost in class. My parents did everything they could at home to help me improve in math and other subjects - they would buy me workbooks to supplement my homework - but the outdated, obsolete teaching approaches used in schools only worked for the 1% of students who were able to teach themselves. I began tutoring while in graduate school and the gratification I felt when my students began to enjoy learning, saw their grades improve, and engaged with their studies with a whole new attitude, was unmatched. I knew then that it was my mission to right the wrongs of today’s broken educational system, and uplift those who truly want to succeed.
