How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.

I highly recommend Bark & Purr SoFlo Pet Sitting. Our pet sitter Yessenia was the best and our pets loved her. We have three cats. Two adults and one new kitten. The kitten was too young yet for just daily in-house visits, so Yessenia was able to care for her in her own house. The other two adult cats just had daily pet visits. We received daily photos of our cats and and they were happy and healthy. We will continue to use Bark & Purr SoFlo Pet Sitting.

Nicole is amazing! She responded to any communications really quickly and was always super friendly. Most importantly, my two kittens LOVE her. She sent a little video every day and it was clear that they were happy she was with them. Whenever I need pet sitting help, Nicole is the first person I'll call.

My husband and I went down to the keys for a three day weekend and left our two Jack Russell Terriers in the care of Robin’s Pet Sitting service. We were very comfortable knowing they were being well cared for and they followed our instructions in every detail. We will definitely use their service again and highly recommend them to care for your fur babies. They created the adorable photo below for us which we love.

Robin seems nice and I do believe she was nice to my cats overall, but she was neglectful. I came home a couple hours early after a 4 day trip. She was hired for all 4 days. She hadn’t come that morning at the agreed-upon time so I found my home in a mess...Bags of dirty litter sitting on my table, dirty water dishes that had not been changed for 4 days and 9 piles of vomit/hairballs since the cats didn’t have sufficient water to move everything through their little bodies properly. I had previously given her very clear instructions that I wanted her to rinse/clean and refill the water dishes daily. I even left out bottles of filtered water for her. I told her not to worry about extras like: wet food, my plants or my mail. I just wanted it to stay as simple as possible so she could focus on the most important things, but apparently she doesn’t believe fresh water daily is important. This is a health issue. How does a professional pet sitter not know that pets need freshwater daily? I’m sure she meant to get back to my place before I got home to clean up the mess and make everything look fine. I’m glad I got home a few hours early and that she was late because I found out the truth. This was such a shocking experience that I ordered 4 indoor cameras for my next petsitter. I lost a lot of trust in people after this experience. Please note: My kitties haven’t vomited since I’ve been home (for the last 5 days) once they got fresh/ clean water again. It’s so rare that they vomit in the first place. The vomit/hairballs were directly related to dirty water and not drinking enough. It’s just inexcusable.
