Tony helped me with the backsplash tiling in my kitchen yesterday since I did not want to do this alone and did not have all the tools. After having had a bad experience with another contractor before, it was a fresh breath of air to meet Tony and work with him. He is punctual, courteous, super friendly and fun to have around. His work ethics are something you don't see much around anymore: he genuinely cares about his customers and what they need and then delivers. And he is honest to tell you when he can't do something. I have hired Tony to come back next week and do some more work and will recommend him to my neighbor as well. Great guy to have do your projects and his prices are reasonable for any budget.

David and Alex came out to re-attach my master bedroom carpet to meet my newly installed tile floor in my master bathroom. While they were here, I had them also stretch my carpet in a couple of places in both my master bedroom and my living room where it was starting to bubble. They completed all tasks in a timely manner, and moved the furniture as needed themselves. They were very efficient with their work and cleaned up after themselves in every room that they worked. I even picked David's brain about a carpet patch that was done by someone else and wondered how we could get the seam line to disappear a little better. He instantly ran out to his vehicle and brought in a couple of tools to fix that issue as well. David was very professional and very personable, and I would definitely hire him again for any future projects!!

Ariel came in and fixed some broken drywall from water damage, new tile flooring in my living and dining room, and he also opened up and knocked out a wall in my kitchen. All of the work he does is Fabulous. He is very thorough. He came to my house and gave me a free quote and said the work would take two days to complete. He completed all of the work and stayed within budget and time he quoted. I would recommend him to anyone needing some house repairs!

Nelson sent an installer to install 6x24 wood look porcelain tile in my master bedroom and enclosed porch along with new baseboard and crown molding. The installer was very punctual and professional and did a fantastic job of laying the tile on a very uneven concrete floor. He did a beautiful job and in the end both floors are incredibly flat with no "toe kickers". I will definitely be contacting Nelson for other jobs I need done around the house. Thank you Nelson and Estenio! Oh yeah, and the best part is, the pricing was very reasonable!

Carlos and Allen were great to work with, even though we had a language barrier- Carlos made it work. The only reason I did not give 5-stars is because they didn't bring a shop vac, therefore the dust was everywhere in the house from the tile removal, and there were a few carpet stains as a result of pieces of ceramic tile getting grounded into the carpet. Overall, lovely people and good work.

Julio exceeded our expectations in every way! When we requested an estimate he asked for some pictures to better understand the complexity of the job; I was pleased with the reasonable estimate that we received. Julio kept in contact with us from the day we hired him until the day of installation, even letting us know that he was on his way that morning. His attention to detail is superb. Julio does meticulous work; we are extremely pleased with our stone kitchen backsplash installation. I would highly recommend Julio Barizon for your tile installation needs!

Hired to install laminate flooring. Was extremely professional, completed project efficiently and took the time to go back and make sure it was done right. Also, cleaned continuously while working to keep mess to a minimum. And cleaned the garage after completing the floor. I was very impressed and I will definitely be reaching out again for future projects.

One of the most honest contractors/handymen I have ever dealt with. Was very transparent over his charges and was a pleasure to deal with. The work involved matching travertine tiles to create two wide long mid-steps down to family room which originally had an 8 inch drop down which was too high. Also removed old laundry room sink and replaced with a new one. Repaired some pool enclosure doors and the front door which was cracked at the bottom.

Rafeek is amazing. He did a wonderful job. If you are looking for assembly line work - this is not the place. Rafeek is truly an artist/designer - he is meticulous in the work he does. He installed a lovely mosaic backsplash for me with a tile and compartment boarder - the cuts are perfectly matched. He even accompanied me to the store to ensure I had exactly what would be needed. He was very neat and incredibly knowledgeable. I love my kitchen. If you have the time to allow for an exemplary job that cannot be topped,my recommendation could not be higher for this gentleman. He will take his time to ensure the work is excellent and nothing less. You get the best of both worlds, a designer and a contractor.

I had a great experience with Jeff and his team and will use them again. They removed a wall and 1100sf of tile flooring, leveled the concrete floor and installed LVP flooring. They also replaced an exterior door and installed new baseboard, a new toilet and a new microwave.

I hired Vladimir, from FamilyHandyman, to tile my front porch. He was not available when needed, but sent his partner Moises. He spent the entire day doing the tile work and left around 10 that night. I am so impressed by the quality of work and the care he took laying it down. I would hire him again without question. Moises, obviously, loves the work he does, Pat Gardner

Terry put in a glass tile back splash in a herringbone pattern, which is very tricky to do right. We are delighted with the finished work; it's absolutely gorgeous!

By my own admission, I am rather picky and meticulous, so hiring anyone for a home improvement project is a bit stressful. But, after seven years it was time to get rid of some of the "builder special" carpet and tile in our home and replace it with hardwood. After spending several months (that's right, months) looking at options, reading reviews, and meeting with providers, I finally settled on Floor Coverings International. I couldn't be happier with the decision. Kent was very helpful and patient as my wife and I looked through the many wood options available, providing us sample after sample until we found just the right product. He offered several great ideas and some excellent advice - both in terms of looks and functionality - that really worked out well. His price was very competitive: not the cheapest, but considering the quality of product and workmanship it was by far the best value. Once we made the decision on what we wanted, the installation process got underway quickly. The first day was dedicated to tearing out the old carpet and tile and preparing the concrete floors. The workers were excellent about containing the mess - tearing up tile is hard, dusty work - and did the job quickly and professionally. The hardwood installer was second-to-none. A true craftsman that took pride in his work. The job wasn't rushed, and attention was paid to the details. Several times during the installation, he would point out something he had done (a tricky cut or difficult transition) and say "see how I did that there...doesn't it look great?" He was right, it did! Just as importantly, it was a pleasure to have him in our home. After just a few days, when the job was done, our kids were actually sad to see him go! To top it all off, both Kent and the installer independently made it a point to stop by a couple days after the job was completed to check and make sure we didn't have any issues or concerns, and to answer questions. It was great to work with a company that takes pride in their work and treats their customers so well. The end product not only meets our expectations, but exceeds them. It is the best looking hardwood floor I've seen in any home. My wife and I have both commented several times that we regret waiting so long to do it! This experience was so positive, we're already thinking about what to do with the floors in other parts of our home. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these guys to friends and family.

The installer did a beautiful job installing the wood-look ceramic tile I had purchased. This after putting in a lot of hard work removing layers of vinyl that had been previously installed on the floors.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install tile?

Tile installation costs vary widely depending on the tiles you choose, where you want them installed, and what kind of demolition and surface preparation you need to have done. The national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The more tiles that need to be cut by hand and laid on the surface, the higher the total cost. Tile installation professionals can handle many different types of stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles, applying them in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and entranceways. They can create anything from artistic mosaic backsplashes in your kitchen to modern shower enclosures to rustic patios in your backyard. Tile installation professions often can remove existing flooring or old tiles and replace drywall. Tile prices range from $1 to more than $50 per square foot — handmade ones are even priced individually — depending on the material. Rustic, handmade or special-use tiles cost more to install because they must be applied to the surface one by one, rather than in a sheet. For most jobs, tile installation costs are based on the square footage of the project. For example, a standard 6-foot by 8-foot shower tile installation can average $1,200-$1,600, depending on whether the tiles go to the top of the shower or to the ceiling. The total cost of a tiling project also includes the grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps, and tile mounting materials like backer board.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
