Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Very impressed with Andy's first lesson with Jorge, and looking forward to a few more! An experienced, well educated dog trainer who is very aware of all the financial, mental, and emotional aspects that come along with dog training. I'm looking forward to the dog that my Andy will become with his training from Jorge.

My dog was extremely fearful and was abused in the past. Susan patiently helped him and myself to understand his needs, behavior and traumas. She exceeded my expectations and she is an outstanding dog trainer.

Sandro is so complete in his training; very patient. He makes it easier for me to understand why he is training me to do the things that work so well for my two dogs. He knows how to work with dogs and communicate proper training techniques effectively to their owners. Sandro is passionate and professional in his approach, and I highly recommend him. I look forward to seeing more results.

Our dog, Montague, was incredibly anxious, out of control outside and medicated on the advise of previous trainers. Jorge's level headed and traditional approach has completely changed our training; in turn completely changing Montague's behavior. Monty is no longer medicated and his trust in us and his place in our pack grows every day. Highly recommend if you want serious positive change for you and your dog.

Today was our first session with George. We have a fear aggressive dog, and I was nervous to say the least. My fiancé and I were both present for the session. The dog exhibited exactly the behavior we were concerned about—this dog has issues. George told us about his experience with dogs like ours and handled it head on. Our other dog just needs general obedience training. As soon as he walked in the door, our friendly dog jumped on him. He gave her a point and a “ssh” and she fell to a seated position instantly. I’ve never seen anything like it. We started working with the aggressive dog first and finished out the session with her, and trained our more social dog in the middle. The session was draining, and at times difficult for me to watch, but needed to happen. We viewed the dogs as our babies—not as dogs. With all said, there was marked improvement by the end of our first session. Our aggressive dog was submissive to him in her crate when he left. George is confident that we will have to well behaved dogs at the end of the program. The session was as much about working with the dogs as it was teaching us how to handle them. George was reassuring and has done a lot to build our confidence already. We look forward to our next session and are confident in his work.

We were looking for a dog trainer to help with serious aggression towards only owners. We were assured this was an area of familiarity. However, the training was very unproductive and we left with very insignificant feedback for our 'unusual problem.' We also did not practice basic commands.

Denise is AMAZING. We had previously seen another trainer but were unsatisfied with the work, especially at a $100 an hour rate. Denise is down to earth, affordable, and remarkably easy to work with. It is obvious she loves dogs and in just two lessons has made a phenomenal difference in our dog, Wrangler.

Our Belgian tervuren absolutely loves him! He is such a great trainer and even checks in on him during the week. He is a fantastic person in general and is living what he is meant to do here. I would not hesitate to recommend this service to anyone looking for a great dog trainer!

We met for the first time last week, and had our first class last Saturday. It became obvious that he is experienced and knowledgeable. My dog reacted well to him, and I am looking forward to completing the training with the reactivity and socialization issues resolved. He is the third trainer I am working with, and hoping the last. I will update at the end of training.

Susan is exactly what I wanted when looking for a dog trainer -- no yelling or scolding involved. I realized very quickly my dog would respond to me if she just knew what I wanted her to do, and Susan does a great job of figuring out exactly how to elicit that action. You also learn fairly quickly that Susan is teaching you as well as the dog (she makes it look easy). Susan also has an awesome facility that's very clean with plenty of room to train. Overall, just a great experience for me and my dog. Lila (pup) is well behaved now and seems a lot happier, which makes my life a whole lot easier.

Susan was very patient with my dog Tigger. He is a rescue with issues and I couldn't have asked for a more understanding and caring trainer. She is helping me learn how to work with him to learn impulse control and basic training commands. She is extremely helpful, dedicated, and a pleasure to work with.

We have had several appointments so far and at this point we are so very happy with the progress. There has been a huge change in our dog's fear aggressive behavior, though we still have a ways to go. Based on the progress so far, I highly recommend Ashley for help with your dog training needs!

I have a 3 year old rescued Pitbull/Labrador Mix and he’s just terrified of everything, I lost all hope of getting him trained but Jorge decided to take on the challenge and I’ve been very impressed with the little improvements I’m already seeing with him, we work on walking and focusing his attention to me and it’s going fantastic, Jorge takes the time to explain and teach you along the way for more lasting results, I think that’s wonderful, most dog trainers I’ve talked to wanted to take my dog for 3 weeks and then teach me everything he learned in an hour, I don’t learn that way. Jorge teaches me and my dog at the same time and takes the time to explain everything that he’s doing and why he is doing it! I’d definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a trainer, by far the best one we’ve talked to!

Within the first day of training we saw a noticible difference in our dog. Jorge does a phenomenal job at exposing not only his techniques but the logic and reasoning behind them as well. We look forward to future classes.

OMG, Jorge is the best. After 1 minute or less, Rocco was under control. He is amaizing. Best dog trainer in the world. My husband and me can't wait for the next class. We only can say " THANK YOU JORGE".

Jorge is extremely capable in training dogs. I have an 11 month doberman, Hunter, who the neighbors disliked because he was too energetic for them. He'd jump and bark due to overexcitement. Day one Jorge already earned his respect and mine. Hunter listens to him way better than anyone else. Jorge is actually teaching and training me more than Hunter because I lacked the experience to handle him. I can't definitely see a great dog soon. Jorge even sticks up for the dogs because he helped solve an issue Hunter had with a kid terrorizing him with her motor bike, Jorge stepped in and handled it professionally and got the neighbors to understand and cooperate, which really helped a lot.

Matheu has been working with Rosie for three months and we are thrilled with the progress she has made. Matheu is a patient, attentive dog trainer who is an excellent teacher of humans as well! He understands and responds effectively to Rosie’s anxiety and occasional willfulness, and he has shown us how to address those issues as well. We look forward to getting Rosie certified as a mobility assistance dog!

Sandros was an excellent trainer for both my puppy and me. My dog responded very well to the training schedule he designed for us weekly, and he was always patient and encouraging with me as he taught me the correct way to handle our pup both at home and in public. Sandros provided a hands on one hour session weekly in my home using all Covid-19 precautions and was available 24/7 with any questions that would arise between appointments. I would highly recommend Sandros and Happy Tails training.

My fiance and I hired Jorge when we were expecting to bring home an Alaskan malamute puppy. We already had one somewhat unruly pit mix that we knew needed to improve his manners as well. We hired Jorge based on his reviews, and he has so far exceeded our expectations. It has only been a couple weeks, but we have noticed improvement in both dogs' behavior. He is readily available for all our puppy-related questions and really seems to go above and beyond for the dogs that he works with. I would definitely recommend his services if you are looking for a dog trainer.

My name's Sean and I have a 15 week old German Shepherd named Shep who until today had been running wild and chewing on everything and everyone. Within minutes Jorge had Shep completely under control and walking on a leash without issue. This is a dog that had been constantly pulling on his leash to chase squirrels and picking up all kinds of trash. Best of all, Jorge was willing to work around my budget (which is important as a college student) and even offered to adopt the dog if I could no longer take care of it. He truly cares about the dogs he trains and to me this is beyond professional. I highly recommend him and can't wait for our next appointment.
