Allen was a pleasure to work with. He not only does great work but a very nice guy and goes above and beyond. We hired him to re-caulk our master shower but we had some questions about water heater maintenance, bathroom fan not working right, and even inquired about interior home painting. He spent extra time with us to answer all of our questions and gave us advice on some things to try that might help our with our water heater situation. Couldn’t be happier!

Great experience! Very detailed and explained what he was fixing and why. Very fair on pricing, while he was fixing the water heater I also asked him to help with some other smaller jobs. You can’t go wrong with Carl!

We are pleased with all his work. Re-worked old washer water & drain pipes to come out of a modern box. Looks so much cleaner and is water tight! Also added a refrigerator water shut off valve. Kept us informed of his work status & got approval for his ideas of the fix. We are so pleased with his workmanship, knowledge and pricing, we are getting estimates for 3 other plumbing fixes we need. Quality work at a reasonable price.

Tony was wonderful. I called him to fix two toilets, and he advised me that my water heater needed repairing as well. He drove to the appliance store, bought the parts and charged me a fair and reasonable price. I am very, very satisfied with his service. And I will use him again

Carlos was awesome. Really saved me. Had a leaky water shutoff valve that still leaked even when turned off. He came out the same day, took care of it fast and charged exactly what he estimated. Will use again for any of my plumbing needs.

Gentle Hands is the best, hands down!!! I had just bought a home and before moving in I needed some work done - laying new flooring, moving washer/dryer plumbing, vents, outlets, installing crown molding, installing tile molding, repairing dry wall, building shelves, changing out lights and fans, building cornices and hanging blinds, and more. They hit the trifecta - responded and completed the work quickly, they were skilled at their work and did a fantastic job on everything ,and the price way very fair. In addition, they provided really good design suggestions and cleaned up after themselves. They were a pleasure to work with in my home and I would not hesitate to use them again. These guys are the guys to call!

I have a small property management company and I deal with a lot of trades people. Reece was exceptional. He made contact with the tenant, showed up on time and stayed with the repairs on the water heater until the unit was operating properly again. He called afterwards to tell me the repairs were finished. The tenant called me to say he was also very pleased with his work. His price quote was very reasonable for the work done. I would definitely hire Reece again.

Our house was destroyed by a water pipe that had been leaking in a wall in our home without out our knowledge for some time. After we found the problem out (extensive mold inside our walls) a friend recommended REStar Services, and I'm glad we went with them, they handled everything from the start of our insurance claim to the finished product. We don't know what we would have done with out their friendly and very knowledgeable staff. Thank you REStar!

We moved into our home a few months ago and while we love the house, it does have some age to it so we knew we would be replacing things. Mike and John replaced our water heater and our water softener. They were very knowledgeable and did a great job. The staff at Affordable Water Treatment answered all of my questions quickly and thoroughly. Thank you! If you are looking for experience and quality of work at an affordable price, hire this company!!

I used their services for the 3rd time last month. The first time that I used them was for a garbage disposal replacement, the second for a clogged kitchen sink. They did a great job on both of those jobs. This time (last month), I needed them to help me with my water heater. The technician was very professional and quickly determined the problem. He replaced my water heater and installed an expansion tank. I will definitely continue to use them.

Replacing a leaking water heater. Was on site on time and got the Job well done and in great professional ways. Pleasant and knowing his job. Had to resort to his technical skills to connect the exiting electrical wiring and cold/ hot pipes from the failing old 40-gallons tank to a shorter new tank. Unfortunately, the only minus was the use of an aluminum drain pan and concrete blocks in place of a single steel stand. This does not reflect well on the superb effort put in but in the end everything works great!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
