Tony helped me with the backsplash tiling in my kitchen yesterday since I did not want to do this alone and did not have all the tools. After having had a bad experience with another contractor before, it was a fresh breath of air to meet Tony and work with him. He is punctual, courteous, super friendly and fun to have around. His work ethics are something you don't see much around anymore: he genuinely cares about his customers and what they need and then delivers. And he is honest to tell you when he can't do something. I have hired Tony to come back next week and do some more work and will recommend him to my neighbor as well. Great guy to have do your projects and his prices are reasonable for any budget.

Andy did tile and a backsplash in my just purchased condo. It is just what I wanted and looks beautiful. Andy and his workers were there working over a period of several days, it seemed to go so quickly! Andy also replaced several old parts that were leaking and needed to be fixed on the toilets before replacing them after tiling the bathrooms. Andy is very friendly, helpful with his suggestions and trustworthy. I will have Andy for my next remodel! Thanks Andy! Joann Parker

Having just bought a home in Micco I looked on Craigslist and found Martin's posting. He quickly provided a quote that seemed fair and agreed to begin work within a short time. I asked for an assortment of repairs. Martin hung cabinets and tiled a backsplash, rewired several areas and installed lighting, removed floor tiles and laid new ones. All his work was done when he said it would be done and to my specifications. Martin helped me chose correct materials at the store( we went together) and he also volunteered to take old stuff to the dump. There were a few things that needed to be done that he was honest enough to say that he would prefer to refer someone else with more expertise. Honest and proficient workers are a refreshing combination!!!! the people he knew were much like him...honest, good workers. I have called Martin on the phone since the completion of the work for advice and he continues to be helpful and professional. He stands by his work and will do a great job for you, too.

I have had Keith for two jobs, the first one was to paint my master bedroom and the second was to install a new kitchen faucet. He always arrived on time, did an excellent job, fair prices, cleaned up afterwards and was just a very nice person to know. Highly recommend him and will use him again.

I thought I was hiring a “handyman” to install my kitchen counter – what I ended up with was a Full-on professional contractor! I had an electrician, plumber, flooring guy and painter ready to go as well but it turned out they were unnecessary because David is a master electrician, plumber, carpenter all in one person. He not only did a superb job on the countertops but ended up doing my entire remodel! He installed all new toilets, sinks, faucets in the bathrooms and kitchen He did rewiring where needed and installed ground fault interrupters and worked on main electrical panel. He installed the flooring and he painted. He is a conscientious diligent professional – and when he is done the place is clean! His prices are more than fair!! I highly recommend him for ANY job you have! He has the tools and knowledge to do ANY scope of work – I will use him for all of my future jobs! Thank you David!

Eric installed our kitchen backsplash and did an excellent job. Good guy. He was scheduled in advance, as we came from out of town and only had a few days to complete the work. Each day he was on time and kept us informed. Would recommend him for future work.

Rob was hired to paint over some very ugly [bright] paint in my newly purchased home which had 12-foot walls and lots of trim! He knows everything about paint and "finishes" on all surfaces. He was very careful to use the correct products. He was super easy to work with, cleaned up as he worked, and made suggestions that were all terrific. His work was so superior, I even had him refinish all of my kitchen cabinets, as a second job. He was so professional and accommodating. I hope to work with him again, soon! I could not have asked for a better experience.

Darwin and his team did an amazing job repainting our kitchen cabinets. From start to finish they were extremely thorough in their work making sure to complete the project without any issues. What would normally take 3-4 days was finished in 2 days just to accommodate our schedule. They even stayed late to finish the job. It was a pleasure to work with him. I would highly recommend him for any job.

We hired Mark to tile our house, which was a pretty big job. He had to remove the carpet and the old tile. The floors needed to be prepped and some cracks needed to be attended to. But you know how it is when you buy a house. One thing just seems to lead to another. Mark was already on site, and willing to add to the scope of the job. He pretty much ended up redoing the whole house. All of the floors, about 1600 sq feet. Painting of the whole house. Backsplash in the kitchen. From beginning to end Mark was with us for about three months. Mark is polite and professional. He is a man of his word. As he puts it, he is "old school". Work hard and take pride in your work. That is exactly what he does. He is a perfectionist and wants the client to be happy. Mark priced the job very fairly and we are thrilled with the results. Our house looks brand new. Most of the time while this work was underway Mark was on his own, as we live in New York. I felt perfectly comfortable with this. Mark is scrupulously honest, totally trustworthy. The guys who work with him as helpers from time to time are great, too. Now that the work is done, we are looking forward to enjoying our beautifully redone home. If you are considering hiring Mark I urge you not to hesitate. You can't go wrong.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
