I can't say enough of Brent and his crew. Communication was great. I was given a heads up before any issues arose or items needed purchasing. I was given every receipt to review for reimbursement. You always hear these nightmare stories of jobs taking longer and costing a fortune because of it. Not here. You pay by the job not the time. Speaking of time if you're a morning person you will love these guys. They like to get at it bright and early. If you're not a morning person like me they will respect whatever time you set for them to start. I unlike most had the luxury of a mostly empty house but I never at one time felt the need to hide or worry about my belongings. I work a full-time job so I wasn't around most of the time. I can only describe Brent as a good ole country boy and his crew follow suit. The guys on my job with him we're young but followed every direction set forth and if there was something that they weren't sure about they didn't attempt it without direction. We all had to learn somewhere. Don't get me wrong they know their stuff but I'm many cases the not as skilled worker attempts a something they aren't familiar with and you end up with the problem. Not here. These young guys knew their stuff. I have already had friends ask me who my contractor is for when they are ready to do some renovations just from my FB posts. These guys are nice, respectful, and skilled. Now I know everyone wants to know about cost. I purchased alot of my own materials and requested the labor. The pricing was more than fair. He does free quotes so there is no harm whatever you decide and I can't stress enough if the job takes longer than expected it's not because of lack of work. It might be weather or a roted wall like in my case but whatever it is it's not going to cost you an arm and a leg because of it. I don't believe there is any job too big or too small that he cannot do. We aren't 💯 done but I'd like to share some pics so far. Full kitchen and 2 bathroom remodel.

Austin did great. He removed wall paper form our master bath, mudded it and painted it. He also put crown molding in the kitchen and performed other painting jobs throughout our house. Austin was very professional and demonstrated to have strong work ethic. We will continue to use him for future projects.

John did an outstanding job of custom building a cabinet and drawer door for our condo renovation. Without John's flexibility and willingness to help us out, we wouldn't have been able to add a cabinet to our kitchen with fronts that all matched. I highly recommend him for any of your cabinetry projects!

We had a pretty bad leak popup during one of the every other day rains we are having. I contacted Gator Tough just to see about an estimate and they immediately sent a crew to tarp my roof without a contract or any money down. The owner said he would hope someone would be kind enough to do it for him in a desperate time of need. When I asked how much I owed he said to pay it forward. Of course that sealed the deal for me and my wife. They completed the roof this weekend and the quality of materials and the pride of work from the crew was amazing. I will be using Gator for all my construction needs. He didnt know this but my wife is getting a new kitchen by Summer and guess who we will be using.

I LOVED my closet install with Donna from "In Its Place Design." Not only did the closets and garage storage system exceed my expectations, but I was so impressed with how fast everything came together. I met Donna at the Home and Garden show in Birmingham. The following week she was in my house taking measurements, the next week a design was in my email box, then within a couple weeks she was installing new shelving with her crew. They did the demolition of old closet shelving, patched holes, installed new closets and Donna spent a couple hours helping me organize my stuff in the new system. Donna was a joy to work with. She loves her job and it shows. Her pricing was the best I had found and her customer service is exceptional.

I am beyond happy with Philip. I hired Philip to do my kitchen remodel, move fridge, move sink (cut cement), move stove, take walls down, build new walls, I mean it was a big job. And I have a big smile on my face! Hands down the right man for the job.

Hal remodeled our kitchen and bedroom. I had a wonderful experience with Hal. He is knowledgeable, professional and with excellent craftsmanship. He stayed in good communication with me before and during the project, offered options based on my budget and even played fetch with my dog. I would use him again without hesitation.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
