My daughter was a first time pet owner and knew that she was in over her head and needed immediate help in training her new rescue dog. We're so grateful, on so many levels, to have found Maureen on Thumbtack. She not only trains the dog but more importantly, trains the owner. I can tell you the first time Remi met Maureen he was nervous and barking non-stop. After her training, it looked like Remi was going to bite her ankle as she was walking away, just as she predicted would happen. Maureen said training is about reading and understanding Remi and the behaviors he displays. For instance, how Remi would quickly glance at my daughter when a stranger is in eyesight. Maureen also came prepared with yummy treats to reward Remi for his good behavior. Positive training! On Maureen's second visit, Remi was outside on the lawn wagging his tail upon seeing her. Maureen taught us a wonderful game using a cupcake pan and had so much useful information to share with us while leash training Remi. Her last visit, we opened our door and Remi was licking her ankles. I very HIGHLY recommend Maureen for training your beloved pet (and you).

We had David over within the last 12 hours and we already have a different dog. Tonight was the best time we've had with her since rescuing her in May. She seems happier and less anxious. We are of course ecstatic and are looking forward to conitnuing her training. Our puppy finally feels like a part of the family! Thank you David!

Martha really went above and beyond in helping us with training our Siberian Husky puppy. Before Martha, we had issues with housebreaking her, she wouldn't listen to us, and we had much difficulty in training her ourselves. When Martha came along and offered her assistance to us, we decided to give her a shot. And we definitely made the right choice. We decided to enroll our dog in Martha's Board & Train program for two 3-day sessions. And within that time period, the dog we used to know was no more. She is now house broken, she listens to commands and performs them. We are truly grateful for the services Martha has provided to us. She not only trains the dog but works with us and trains us to be better dog owners as well. I would highly recommend Martha to anyone seeking assistance with their dog.

We are very thankful for Christine, her professionalism, and her genuine love of animals. It is one less thing to worry about before going out of town, because we know that Christine and K9 Holistics will not only take great care of our furry family members, but also take great care of our house while we are away. We receive text message updates and photos, and when we come home, our two dogs (and a fish) are happy and relaxed, well-fed, and well-loved!

Michael Chapman of the Sit Means Sit - Saratoga dog training franchise kept Zoe (our 18 week old female standard poodle) for a two week 'board and train' experience. While there our Zoe was around other dogs and spent a great deal of time going places with Michael while learning to obey commands. The experience was positive for Zoe and for us! She is much easier to walk with and listens to and obeys many commands readily. We plan to continue to reinforce the training with classes that are available twice weekly at the Sit Means Sit facility and are enjoying online info that is made available. We are convinced that the process/system is the best, fastest manner to train a dog. And, are becoming vocal 'salespersons' for Sit Means Sit.

I hired Quinn to work with my Boston Terrier mix (Lulu) who was a nightmare on a leash. She constantly pulled and had leash aggression issues. I purchased a package of personal training sessions and have been extremely happy with the results. The training was for me, as much as it was for Lulu. Quinn was really flexible and super easy to work with. Our training sessions started at home but we soon branched out to places like Petco and eventually downtown Dunedin. Lulu has come a long way since her first training session. She now knows several commands and walks nicely beside me on her leash. We are still working to improve her confidence when meeting new dogs on a leash but I continue to see improvement with each new outing. If you have a pup in need of manners, I highly recommend Quinn.

Lane has a true understanding of dogs. I Met lane walking around downtown Dunedin when my GSD (German Shepherd dog) was about 4 months old(about a year ago). We spoke of a mutual love for the breed and how both of our grandparents were involved in K9 training (my grandfather was a k9 judge). Lane never pushed a service our a sales pitch on me he asked me some questions about my GSD. I let him know I was working with a trainer but at times my puppy seemed to rule us. He then told me he moved to the area and is training dogs here and if i ever needed help to call him (His expertise includes guard dogs, behaviors, advance training). During the past year we still were working with the original trainer who was very good as well. Something was missing though and we both felt that we taught my GSD everything we could but, he had a hurdle. You see my GSD would see other dogs and become over stimulated and hard to control and this started at about 7 months old ( He is a very intelligent and high drive GSD who's a sweetheart but stubborn.). He would jump on everybody not listen and tend to be just a brat. With dogs though he would bark aggressively and scare other people even though he just wanted to play he also seemed to be scared of them. So my trainer said let's take some time off and figure out something later. My wife and I talked about how he just needed to age and mellow but I felt this could not wait. I also mentioned how we met Lane and we should call him, but we were feeling a little discouraged and felt it may be better to wait. The next afternoon on the way to the beach I saw Lane walking two dogs and told my wife it's a sign let's just call him and try it. Lane gave us a free consultation that was over an hour. He then gave us his feedback and gave us pricing that was very competitive to any big box store but his is one on one. The difference with Lane though has been dramatic already, he truly has a passion and love for his career. After just a few weeks my GSD has improved with not only his old training but new training as well. My GSD is walking better on leash, reacting less and learning to be a companion and not pushing to be an alpha. Lanes knowledge of reading a dog has been honed since a young age and it shows. My GSD not only loves to go to training but now acts as if Lane is part of the family. My GSD is calmer and now looks for me to command him. We are not perfect by any means (its only been 4 weeks) but I truly believe with Carters k9s my GSD will be perfect and a dog that my grandfather would adore. Ask about the tree stump!

Andrea did an excellent job of grooming my miniature poodle. It shows that she loves dogs, and my Lexi showed no signs of stress after I picked her up. Andrea is very professional (and very pretty).

I have trained dogs for 20 years and I have worked as a veterinary assistant and volunteer at an animal rescue farm in Maryland. I have done AKC work and agility training. I have rescued and trained "hard to place" dogs. I don't use physical force, but rather a reward system to get specific appropriate behaviors. A well-trained dog is more secure because he/she knows what is expected. Therefore a well-trained dog is happier and allows for more freedoms.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
