Introduction: I am a CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed) by the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers. The dog training industry is not regulated, and there are hundreds of dog trainers in Broward County with varying levels of competency, but less than 25 of us are actually certified BY the Certification Council. This required several hundred documented hours of hands-on experience training both dogs and people, extensive knowledge of learning theory, stages of development, modern training techniques, genetics, environmental factors, cognition, and behavior modification. Just as you would never hire a doctor, lawyer, or an electrician without the proper education, experience, and certifications, neither should you hire a dog trainer without a professional level of certification and experience. Just ask! I am also an American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Certified Evaluator/Instructor, and am certified in Canine CPR/First Aid. I am a positive reinforcement, relationship centered trainer. What this means is I look at your relationship with your dog as the key element in both foundational obedience training and behavior modification. Does your dog clearly understand the way you are communicating? Does your dog have a reliable routine every day that he can depend on and behavior from you that is consistent? Are your dog’s needs being met— not just food, water, and shelter, but exercise, mental stimulation, opportunities to be challenged, and especially, emotional security? Dogs have a deep desire to be appreciated, praised, social, and comfortable in their roles in their families. Destructive behavior is almost always a result of an unmet need. Very often, when I see an issue like pulling on leash, inappropriate biting, chewing or barking, over-arousal, reactivity, frustration, or aggression, the solution involves the human changing their communication style, utilizing management of the situation, and a well thought out behavior modification plan. I have been in the dog care profession for more than twenty years and have been training dogs full time for over five years. I am a member of the following professional organizations: International Association of Animal Behavioral Consultants (IAABC) Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) Pet Professional Guild (PPG) Grisha Stewart’s Behavioral Adjustment Training (BAT) for aggressive and reactive dogs Additionally, I was the Director of Day Training at Dynamite Dog Training for two and a half years until I recently to start my own business, which has always been my lifelong dream. I promote established positive reinforcement techniques that are essential to your relationship dynamic. No aversive tools or techniques are necessary! I use my own dogs to provide role models for obedience, socialization, and confidence building when appropriate. I absolutely believe in the benefit of dogs learning from other dogs and have seen it in action multiple times during my career. Clear, consistent rules, socialization, and appropriate exercise are necessary for any dog’s emotional mental health and physical well-being—along with lots of praise and encouragement!

Dog Training

I cant say enough nice things about Kim with Benevolent Sun Dog. She is knowledgable, kind and compassionate, flexible and simply awesome. She helped me to get my senior dog ready for a plane ride so I can go see my mom. I feel like she saved us. She came up with a plan and a timeline and we worked together to make it happen. I have been only working with her for a month and I just booked my flight! I am going to continue training for my little guy so I can actually get him certified as a Service Dog. It will take some time, but I am confident that with Kim's help, there is nothing he cant do! Hire Kim now :)

Dog Training

Kim has been great with helping my dog adjust to a new environment, we just moved across the country! She is also helping me get my dog ready for an airplane trip. 10 out of 10 I would pick Kim again for my dog training needs! I love that she advocates for treat praise instead of an ecollar for dog correction!

Dog Training

Kim was great over the phone. She gave so much information and even followed up with video resources on things like biting and potty training my puppy. Her first session was about 2 hours at my home and was some training with my puppy but so much more informative and really educating my husband and me on how to train our furbaby and focus points. 10 out of 10. I highly recommend Kim and will continue to work with her for all our dog training needs.

Kim is awesome! We have seen big improvements in our dogs because of her. She is super knowledgeable, friendly, personable, and professional. She not only trained our dogs but she gave us the knowledge and tools to improve our dogs behavior as well. I highly recommend!

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Just as you wouldn’t hire a doctor, contractor, or accountant without the proper education, certifications, references, or professional affiliations, neither should you skimp on a professional trainer for you and your best friend. I am certified by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers and the American Kennel Club, and have worked very hard to achieve my level of professional success. My fees are $100 per private session, with a 10% discount for pre-paid packages of 3 or more. I specialize in obedience training, crate/potty training and puppy issues, loose leash walking skills and leash reactivity, aggression issues, multi-dog households, and canine enrichment.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I have a standard questionnaire for potential clients to discuss with me over the phone to get a feel for the individual concerns and goals and to begin a treatment plan. Then in the first session, I meet with the clients in their home, where the dog is much more likely to be at ease. At this time I do an assessment, to determine energy, motivation levels, anxiety and frustration thresholds, appropriate exercise needs, socialization (dogs and humans) and bonding level to give me a more thorough picture of the dog's temperament and tendencies. Then I ask for the client's input to create a custom plan and follow up with tasks, goals, and homework on a weekly basis. I am always available between lessons by phone or text for ongoing support.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have over 5000 hands-on training hours, accumulated as the full time Director of Day Training at a large South Florida dog training center for over two years, combined with two more years as a trainer at a big box pet store chain, and ten years (part time) running my own operation. I have several thousand more hours of direct observation, research, consultations, webinars and seminars in the dog training field. I am a Professional Member of The Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT), The Pet Professionals Guild (PPG), and a Supporting Member of The International Association of Animal Behavioral Consultants (IAABC). I am a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) by the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers. I am Certified by the American Kennel Club as a Canine Good Citizen Instructor/Evaluator and am Certified in Pet CPR/First Aid.
