I have a 3 year old rescued Pitbull/Labrador Mix and he’s just terrified of everything, I lost all hope of getting him trained but Jorge decided to take on the challenge and I’ve been very impressed with the little improvements I’m already seeing with him, we work on walking and focusing his attention to me and it’s going fantastic, Jorge takes the time to explain and teach you along the way for more lasting results, I think that’s wonderful, most dog trainers I’ve talked to wanted to take my dog for 3 weeks and then teach me everything he learned in an hour, I don’t learn that way. Jorge teaches me and my dog at the same time and takes the time to explain everything that he’s doing and why he is doing it! I’d definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a trainer, by far the best one we’ve talked to!

I just wanted to share our experience with Todd and South Orlando Dog Training. We had an incident with our dog Bella- she's terrified of skateboards. Usually we just avoid skateboards all together- but on a walk, a guy came up behind us on a hover board which makes no noise- and cut us off. Bella got scared and bit the guy- not doing major harm... but it easily could've ended very badly. The guy was apologetic and said he should've known better than to come up behind a dog like that. It was at that time that we knew we needed help- we NEVER want to relive that situation again. It's our job to protect her from herself... and we were beside ourselves. We didn't know what to do! We just recently relocated from Los Angeles to Orlando so we really didn't know anyone that could refer us to a dog trainer. I came across a business card from South Orlando Dog at a local coffee shop in Celebration and called to see what could be done. We've been working with Todd now for a few months and I have to say- it has made a HUGE difference. South Orlando Dog Training is all about positive reinforcement. We NEVER thought Bella could break this habit. Todd is so patient and so caring- you can tell he really loves what he does and he truly cares about his clients. I would say we hit the jackpot as far as dog trainers go. If you are even thinking of hiring a trainer for your dog- Todd is the way to go.

Camila has been an amazing dog trainer! Our dog has learned so much already and it's all thanks to Camila! Barley always looks forward to his weekly training sessions. We love that during our 5 week training sessions we can reach out to Camila with any questions or concerns and she is there to assist.

Marina helped train my 6 month old puppy. We adopted him from the shelter and he came with a plethora of behavior issues (chewing, trouble being potty trained, etc.). With Marina's expertise, we have the best trained dog in town!

My family was devestated when we found Mo'bedience dog training. Our 4 1/2 year old male olde english bulldog Bruno had been increasingly agressive. We had never given Bruno any boundries. We loved him so much we just let him do whatever he wanted, not realizing this wasnt truly loving Bruno. By not establishing boundries for Bruno he took on the very difficult and stressful job of being alpha in our house. During the hurricane after days of the power being out and extreme levels of stress in the house. Bruno was in a dark room the kids ran in and fell on him startling him. During the chaos he bit our son. We thought putting him down was going to be our only option. Thats when we found Mo'obedience. I have to say I was still very unsure if it was possible to get the results we needed with our dog. When we picked up our dog 14 days later he was amazing. I couldnt believe the manners my dog had learned. We recieved daily texts and videos keeping us updated the whole time. It was so reassuring to see the updates of what he was learning. Mo'obedience made it possible for us to keep our family dog that we had grown to love so much. Seeing Bruno snuggling with his kids and having him home is priceless. The kids love "working with him"and being active in his training. They are very excited about teach him new tricks and set up obstacle courses for him. I cant say thank you enough to Mo'obedience training for what they did for our family. We are forever greatful THANK YOU ❤

My dog Winnie was very high strung. She knew her basic commands but it was hard to get her to settle down and listen. After just 1 training session with Ernie she was listening! The facilities are clean and beautifully landscaped. As a dog lover being around all of the puppies and dogs is better than a day at the zoo! All the dogs are so well trained and loving. I highly recommend Valor K-9 to every dog owner. Winnie is such a good girl now. She follows my lead out of love now, not just my command. Thank you Ernie for helping my Winnie!

Madi did a great job of watching our home and especially taking care of our dog. You can tell she has a great love for dogs and is very comfortable with them. Our dog does not warm up easily to many people, but he took to Madi right away. He even slept in the bed with her at night! He was calm and happy when we arrived home from our trip. Would definitely use Madi again and recommend her to others.

My family and I are new to owning a dog. We adopted a dog from the shelter and wanted to make sure we trained her correctly. K9 Connection is honestly the best dog training company I have been lucky to come across. The initial contact, they come to your house, analyze the dog, and how we work with our dog. They showed us how to control, walk, and enjoy our new family member. The price is perfect for one on one training, honestly don't be scared and think you can't afford this. I thought that and the value you get from training even if it is one session is priceless. They are professional and always on time. Highly recommend.

Thanks to Gary Adams and Natural Instinct Dog Training, Inc, we were able to take our border collie mix Kooper to the beach for the first time. He was a perfect gentleman both on and off leash and came when called, He did not destroy the cottage we stayed in and met new friends both people and dogs with a calm personality. It was a true pleasure. Thanks Gary!!!

On a 5-star rating I'd like to give her a hundred thousand, million billion! This is the best investment I will ever make in anything related to an animal that I have. It will bless our lives every day forward for as long as my dog lives and will bless me with the next dog I have in the next after that. In the life of my dog it will end up being a fraction of a penny a day investment. The scale quality of Vanessa's her training has forever changed my dog's life and my life. It's actually made the difference of being able to keep my beloved pet. I've worked with him daily since I got him at 10 weeks old, he's always been a handful and I've never been effective with my training. This summer things spiraled out of control when he got aggressive with a housemate and a neighbor. I was scared to have hum around children because he would get aggressive with them as well. I was looking into the options of finding a new home for him, which broke my heart but I was trying to do what was best for the dog for the children in the neighborhood and for myself. I thank God we found Vanessa and her family that took my dog in for 2 weeks socialized thim trained him, helped him discover he could trust people to be the alpha and he could relax into just being a dog and a puppy. He is much more happy and relaxed than I have ever seen him. He minds me almost perfectly. He's safe around children men and unexpected visitors to our house now! I did my homework and talked to multiple trainers before choosing Vanessa.. Most of them their rate was double or triple Vanessa's and I didn't always like their approach. The fact that my dog got to live in her home and be fully socialized with her family I think made an enormous difference. This is the highest review I've ever given to any kind of business at any time. I can't overstate how good she is.

There's not enough to say about our experience with Christian as our dog trainer. He has put so much time in with our dogs and they are doing great. We had quite an issue and change to deal with and he tackled them with no complaints or lack of professionalism. The dogs have learned so much and so have the parents! He is also a really great guy and we couldn't be more pleased. So much so that we hired him for an extension. Thanks Christian!!!!

My dog, Meiko, is a rescue dog with a troubled past. This has caused him to have extreme trust issues with new people and he also had severe leash aggression. After just two short weeks with Brandon, Meiko came back a changed dog. He came back with newly learned skills and was so much more confident in himself. It took some adjusting for him to listen to me as well as he did to Brandon during turnover, but with practice and patience, he’s come a long way. Brandon was great about sending pictures and updating me on Meiko’s progress, which made being away from him a bit easier. And he’s been a great resource now that Meiko’s back from training. If you’re struggling with your dog’s training and think there’s no hope for them, I suggest giving Mo’bedience a shot.

Marshall and I can personally attest to the fact that Martin and Pat are wonderful people who not only love dogs, but are excellent trainers as well. We had our Lab, Harley, trained by others before we knew about them and weren't satisfied, so when Harley went to Martin and Pat, we couldn't believe the results in just a couple of weeks! We will definitely take Harley back for "refresher" courses. He loves it there, too.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

        • What type of training methods do you use?
        • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
        • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
