It's a pleasure having Jim do work for us. He's polite, punctual and does a great job. We can always depend on him to get the work done in the time he says it will take. When he's finished he leaves everything as clean as it was before he started. If there's a better way to do the work, Jim will think of it. His prices are always very reasonable. He has done many jobs for us, including repairing a ceiling that had been badly damaged from a major leak. He also disassembled a defective 15 foot built in wall unit, sanded, repainted and reinstalled it. It looks better than it did when it was new! While other contractors told us the whole unit had to be replaced, Jim found a better, less expensive way to fix it.

I just moved into a brand new home and have absolutely no skill doing stuff most home owners need to know - like hanging new lights, building shelving etc...So, I searched around town for just a handyman and found Mark and Ryan on Thumbtack. I thought my request for their help would bore them to tears but they were enthusiastic, totally professional and fast. But best of all it was a pleasure having them in my house. The quality of their work was great but best of all - they were just nice guys! I am hoping to schedule them again next week to do more handymen stuff but will also be talking to them about the front courtyard area I want to hardscape. Do NOT hesitate to Ryan and Mark for all you need done around the house. They are beyond trustworthy, totally professional, conscientious and fun to have around, too. I feel lucky to have found them.

Excellent! My husband and I are so pleased with the work completed on our home by Steve Germann of Specialty Home Services. Steve’s promptness with an onsite visit was a big factor in going with his bid. The repair work completed on the damaged soffit was impeccable. Steve’s attention to detail while repairing and painting was such a benefit for us as homeowners. We are very thankful we found Steve Germann and would rehire him for services in a heartbeat.

My experience with DVI was terrific. Donna and Denise were dedicated to helping me decorate our newly built home ... no small task since it was still under construction. They understood mine and my husband's tastes and preferences and also were patient with our 'changed our mind' requests. They were professional and knowledgeable about the services and tradesmen needed to get the job done ... well almost done. We are still working on the final touches but are delighted with the results thus far. Thank you DVI!!!

Robert and his associate worked to redo my entire master bathroom as well as installed a new outside door and frame and built me a new deck. His attention to detail and explanation of work needed along the way gave me a feeling of involvement all through the jobs. I would definitely hire him again - he did what he said he would do (plus more as necessary) and was finished when he said he would be ( a rarity among contractors!) A pleasure to work with and a professional who truly aims to please

Brian and his team were able to remodel my home by replacing old carpet and tile with handscrapped laminate flooring. My home is now my sanctuary. Brian and his team were very professional and efficient in replacing my floors and didn't even charge me for removing the carpet! My floors look like engineered wood and they were half the price! Brian's price was very affordable and reasonable. I am looking forward to working with Renovate Tampa Bay again to remodel my kitchen!

KAI Vision Builders (KAI) completed two major home remodeling efforts for me totaling approximately $175,000. The first project consisted of adding a second story to my existing home, which consisted of a master bedroom suite and on-suite. Kai was responsible for preparing designs for our review and approval, permitting, construction and construction management. During the construction phase, Phil Foster monitored the ongoing work too ensure work quality and timely completion of the project. The second project KAI Vision Builders completed for us (completed at a later date) was the complete renovation and remodeling of the front elevation of our home. Again KAI Vision Builders; Again they provided the quality and professionalism that we had experienced during the first project. We would recommend AI Vision Builder to those considering home renovation/remodeling efforts.

John completely remodeled our home from the entry way to family room to kitchen and both baths. We were completely satisfied with the quality of work performed. He and I designed the tile layout in the kitchen, family room and entry. We have received many favorable comments on the unique pattern. We recently put our house up for sale and it sold in a short time. I feel it was because of John's remodeling that the value was much greater than it would have been if not for his expert job of remodeling.

Bobbie Brantley took raw space and designed a law office that was welcoming, unique, functional and professional. She wove the nature of our practice and my and my partner's personalities into each phase of the office. She was there from start to finish. From design, flooring to wall coverings her choices were tasteful. The build out was with in the landlord allowance. She recommended the furniture and furnishing for the offices. She had a custom oak conference table built for the library. The staff offices were practical and functional. Our staff was pleased with their space. Our clients appreciated the environment and felt at ease. All who came in were impressed with our offices. Ms. Brantley has permission to post photographs of the office.

I cannot say enough about JB Builds and Renovations! Juan was an absolute pleasure to work with throughout my entire project. From start to finish his communication was outstanding and he gave wonderful recommendations on design ideas and finishing touches. He was extremely professional, always on time, and very respectful of my home. The quality of his work was/is phenomenal and it was nice to see someone who has a high standard for his work with immaculate attention to detail. If you want someone who truly takes pride in their craft and pride in the final product in your home, JB Builds and Renovations is the only option. Juan also has extremely competitive pricing and will even have better results than the other companies that try to charge you an arm and a leg. I'm ecstatic with my master bedroom renovations and I would recommend JB Builds and Renovations to anyone!

My wife and I recently purchased a second home near Sarasota FL. There were a number of updates and improvements we wished to have completed prior to furnishing the property. While having no prior experience in the area, we were able to get referrals for qualified contractors from a number of friends who also had properties in the area. After interviewing four different contractors, all of whom appeared to be well qualified, we selected Michael Maggio, ironically the only one for whom we did not have a prior personal referral. More than anything, it was that Michael demonstrated and understanding of what we wanted to achieve and a willingness to do it on a timely basis. We have never regretted on decision. Michael and his crew has been nothing if not responsive and flexible throughout the process! Can't stress enough how much we appreciate how he has treated our place like his own, going above and beyond to make sure the work will stand the test of time. He has unfailingly laid out costs in advance for the work and stuck to that budget throughout. I would, and have, recommended Michael without any reservations to friends and family alike. My only regret is that once our project is complete, our daily communications will likely come to an end!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
