Introduction: I am most concerned about where the student is coming from. It is vital to speak on equal footing with them; I have seen, from both sides, the effects of a patronizing attitude upon students. We are all human and must admit to errors.
I especially like the pure joy expressed by students who previously thought they could never understand a lab technique or a scientific concept. It fulfills me beyond anything material.
