This is my initial response received from Michael. interesting when I provided him other estimates to beat he not only didn't match it he walked away from the quote and colluded with the other contractor who got upset that I shared his quote.

it should have said, should you receive a written estimate and i can not beat it, i will collude so you cant use that contractor anymore
I have just read the response from MCG closets. Let me update this post. I have spoken verbally with the contractor that Mike personally called to try and sabotage my project because he can not compete.
"Believe it or not, I'm just now pulling into my shop to build some drawers for a fresh install that I will be doing tomorrow; so unfortunately I'm still unable to review the designs & pricing at this time. That being said, I wanted to touch base as to not hold-up your decision making process any longer; and let you know that I must gracefully bow out of the running at this time. Again, I haven't had the opportunity to sit down & really crunch the numbers to the fullest extend . . . but based upon the information you've provided, I can assure you that even skinning it to the bone; I would be EXTREMELY hard pressed to match (let alone beat!) GPC's quote on the woodgrain. From a personal standpoint I can safely advise you to not hesitate hiring them, and locking in the fantastic deal they are offering! GPC is a reputable company, serving South Florida companies for many years . . . so rest assured they will take care of your project & needs."
I have now hired GPC the company who beat your pricing and who you personally called to let them know I sent his pricing to you and he informed me that he thought it was odd that a contractor would call him out of the blue as well as to ask for other drawings. He stopped short of ethics.
Mike your practices are what these readers need to know about. if you didn't want to do my project you just needed to move on. you didn't need to call the other contractor. you had a written offer as you requested from a reputable contractor. You don't need to blame it on me. I changed the drawings only once of which you never sent updates you just confirmed the price change. I assume most people have the right to change a drawing and work with other designers. It is clearly your right to say I don't want to move forward, but why call the other contractor just because you can't beat their prices or match their better design work? Update your messages to say I will require a written offer and I will call the other contractor so we know upfront.
Let's all move on, if these readers get a message that says you will beat any contractors written estimate and to send them the drawings, then they will know that you cannot and you will not stand behind that and you will also call the other contractor to advise them their client has provided you with their hard work and pricing.
Moral of the story is, I don't need to deal with you anymore, and others may get a great ride from your company, I didn't and I do not respect anyone breaching confidentiality based on their request to send them written pricing and drawings from a reputable source that you allege you can beat, clearly, you can't and if you can't you call them.. Which is fine. you have that right if you had any intentions of matching it but you didn't. You called him and said, "I am bowing out".
Other may be ok with what you do, I didn't like it and if anyone else doesn't like it they will know not to send you others quotes and they should not have any expectations that you can or will beat it.
These are your words and I am sure you will write something again to try and twist the story or save yourself, but bottom line is why would I write this, the contractor with the better pricing is doing the job, he felt bad that he allowed you to speak to him in such a way without knowing that you wrote and asked for copies of pricing and design work.
Period and end of the story, go and write all you want now, this is my story, others may not have an issue with these practices, I did.
As far as your work is concerned, I am sure it may be very good, I was willing to use you until you personally called the other contractor.
