JT was great for our low key wedding reception at the Epicurean hotel in Tampa, Fl. He has some real talent and we're glad he shared this moment with us. He performed a special song for my husband and I, which was amazing given the short amount of time he had to prepare it. We hope to hire him again for any other events we host! The Pros: We booked at the last minute and he was able to make himself available for our wedding reception We were working on a low budget and he was able to work with us He learned and performed a song that originally was not in his repertoire He brought all of his material He was reliable, arrived on time. No need to check on him. He's got a great voice and real talent! He performed AND had any other songs you could request available to play! The less amazing but this good Some of our guest sitted near the speakers mentioned they were set up a little louder than would have been necessary. It's true it was loud, but everybody had a ton of fun anyways! We could always hear more of the artist's singing. I'm not blaming him though we heard him a lot, and everybody needs some break from singing! We were extremely busy with family we had not seen in a long time, and a harsh reminder to leave a review from JT was pretty unwelcomed.

I have seen the Steve Hogie band play in several different venues and they always leave the crowd wanting more. This band has a very extensive song selection which includes some surprising and fun acoustic arrangements for songs that typically aren't done in that style, such as Journey's "Separate Ways." It is very clear that they have become a very tight unit in their time together and they always leave the crowd wanting more.

I had a one-time lesson with Michelle the day before a performance with a band. I don't have much of a music background, but Michelle was able to explain things clearly with a little bit of music theory which I appreciated. She was able to help me transpose two songs to a different key. The performance went well, and I wouldn't have been able to do as well without her help. She was super flexible with me as she had never had a request like this before. I highly recommend her.

I was looking for a band that could entertain my guests who were aged between 45 and 70. Wow! Dream class was the perfect choice! They were the life of the party as they played all the old songs we were very familiar with. There was hardly any room on the dance floor as the band kept the crowd dancing all night. Also liked the way they kept the audience involved with their sing-along games and various contests. Great sound and lighting too. I can't wait to hire them again for our next big event!

We saw the Brown Bag Brass Band play and we immediately knew they were the band we wanted to hire for my husband's big 4-0 birthday party. They were amazing from start to finish! They were very flexible to our needs and extremely professional. They totally "made" the party. We started at one location and did a second line to another location. The guests loved it! There was a lot of dancing going on and everyone had a great time. I would highly recommend hiring this band. I can't wait to hire them again for my next party!

I am the owner of DG Rockers Guitar and Music School, a private music school located in Brooklyn, NY. Mr. Valentín has served as music instructor as well as music director for over 2 years at my school. Based on my experience, I believe his dedication, passion, knowledge, and innovation have proved to make him an amazing teacher. I first met Francisco on October of the year 2013 when he was interviewing for the position of piano instructor at my school and I remember right away knowing that he would be a great fit. His humility and passion towards serving others was evident right away. Francisco has an incredible gift of being able to connect with young people through music. Over the years I saw Francisco take initiative and build up the music program, composing songs mindfully catered to his students’ musical development, creating his own music learning sheets, inventing comparisons and games to help his students better understand musical concepts, and even simplifying more advanced musical exercises such as the Hanon techniques so that his students could begin strengthening their coordination and technique right from the beginning. I also witnessed him bringing an idea we brainstormed together to life by creating fun and effective rock band classes and putting together concerts with me to showcase our students’ achievements. His upbeat, positive, and kind demeanor was always a great source of inspiration for our students, their parents, and his peers. The passion with which he taught each class cultivated a love for music in every student’s heart that I believe has left a lasting imprint. We always believed in building a sense of community with our students and their parents. This was something that Mr. Valentín was very passionate about, to the extent that he became a mentor and positive role model to our students, catching up with them every class, advising them positively on all matters musical and non-musical, and even bringing them Christmas gifts. He also became a great friend to our family of parents, always treating them with respect, kindness, and talking with them after classes. I believe Mr. Valentín would be a tremendous teacher for anyone and has my utmost recommendation. Beatrice Roberts and her band were hired after hearing them at the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa. They blew us away that we had to have them for my company's corporate gala. Sweet Bea and the Boys went above and beyond and were integral to the success of the event. Hope to book you again soon, Patricia

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
