Greg Jolly conducted several hypnotherapy sessions with me last year. He was very professional, very effective, and I would definitely recommend him. I went into the first session out of pure curiosity, but I continued the hypnotherapy sessions because of their effectiveness at tackling a 40+ year habit.

Becky Shanks was very professional in her approach to setting up my hypnosis session. She sought background information that could be incorporated in the hypnosis, making our session orientated to my personal needs. Becky also relies on a very calm, engaging and soothing approach to her hypnosis putting you into a very relaxed and receptive state, even if you are a first time user as I was. So, if you have ever thought that hypnotherapy might bring benefits to your life I would suggest giving Becky an opportunity to address your needs.

Laura is awesome. I have to admit at first when I thought of Hypnotherapy I thought of it the way Hollywood presents it. It is not that way at all. It was all about what I wanted to accomplish at this time in my life, not someone shoving ideas in my head. She was very patient, understanding and knowledgeable, ensuring that she listened to my challenges and made sure I understood every step of the process. She did just what she said she would do for me. I am a better person, have less stress and more peace in my life.

I have been working with Jeff for quite a while now. The change in myself from then until now is phenomenal. I'm clear, confident, I make stuff happen! I'm a professional musician with three children. There has been a marked positive difference in all of these aspects of my life. I can honestly say that starting to work with Jeff was one of the best decisions of my life. A million thanks!!!

Working with Dr. Wesley has been a wonderful experience! He's been instrumental in my journey toward better health. My relationship with food has been the “thorn in my flesh” for most of my adult life. I was aware of some reasons for my struggles but felt powerless to change the situation permanently. Our work together put me on the path to do just that! Before getting to know Dr. Wesley, I was skeptical about hypnotherapy. I assumed a hypnotherapist would behave like those I’d seen on TV. He/she would use a swaying watch to put me into a trance, say magic words and then one of two things would happen: either I’d be miraculously cured or, more likely, it would prove to be a waste of time. Nothing could be further from the truth! I was pleasantly surprised to learn that hypnotherapy was an interactive process that wouldn’t require my giving control over to the therapist. Dr. Wesley is very gifted at what he does. His insightful questions, hypnotherapy and NLP techniques have expanded my perspective… My approach had been to push myself to lose weight through sheer willpower and get down on myself when it didn't happen. Now, I’m more relaxed. I get curious about my thoughts about food and focus on making good choices, rather than on a number on the scale. The tools and techniques he's shared have allowed me to make healthy choices more naturally. My habit of having a regular Coke every morning has been replaced with tea (which I enjoy just as much). I am being more intentional about my choices. The byproduct is that the weight is coming off more easily. Thank you, Dr. Wesley!

I had a Great experience with GA Hypnotherapy. I have done hypnosis before, but no one has taught me the two techniques that Mrs. Shawn did which works awesome with anxiety. I had anxiety off the charts about getting a tattoo on Saturday afternoon. I went under hypnosis and came out very calm and energized. When I went for my tattoo, my anxiety was low. My pain tolerance was low as well. I handle a hour and 15 minute tattoo to express my story of my son with autism and how Captain America helped my son with his journey of Autism. The tattoo artist was impressed how well I did and EVERYONE that has seen my tattoo is so shocked that I have no swelling nor bruising which is common with getting a tattoo. The artist told me that since I was so relaxed, he was able to do the fine detail to art. Thanks to Mrs. Shawn I have the artwork of my dreams and everywhere I go people are in awe of my tattoo.

I had a very positive experience with Balanced Path Counseling. Counselor Cole used both Brainspotting and Hypnotherapy to help reduce my physical pain (caused by health conditions and an injury/fall) which medication alone was unable to do. The best part of all? The results have been sustained. I highly recommend it!

Joyce is a very caring person, who really wants the best for you. She gives great advice and has a wealth of personal experiences to draw on. She is committed to your personal success. She has a very practical approach that I appreciate. Since I live far away from Dr. Gale now, and I refuse to skype, I can no longer get the full benefit of her services, but I love her natural healing philosophy.

    About

My work stands out because I'm effective. I get results. Sometimes the results happen after just one session! I constantly get people who have tried other hypnotherapists in the area and got little to no results, so they came to me as a last ditch effort. I'm always surprised that they are so blown away by my hypnotic techniques and they reveal to me that others did not apply hypnosis the same way I do. No wonder it didn't work for them? I can only wonder what the heck techniques they are using? I was trained by the best hypnotists in the country, so that's the reason I'm so good. Plus, I continue to educate myself weekly so I'm always up to date and perfecting my techniques. (I feel like that sounded very egotistical, but I'm not at all. I'm just confident!)

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How does hypnosis work?

Hypnosis is a wellness technique that works by promoting positive behavioral or cognitive changes. During successful hypnosis, the client should be eased into a state of deep relaxation in which the conscious mind takes a back seat and the subconscious mind becomes more active. The client is often able to let go of critical thoughts and become receptive to the therapist’s suggestions. In this state of hypnosis, motivating suggestions can bypass your usual mental resistance and internal defense mechanisms. For example, even if you want to quit overeating cupcakes, you may have some level of resistance that your rational mind can’t overcome. During hypnosis, the positive suggestions made by the hypnotherapist can bypass your usual blocks, helping you to achieve the formerly unachievable: stopping overeating, quitting smoking, mastering public speaking, or losing your fear of heights. The goal of hypnosis is to strengthen and empower the client’s motivation, commitment and focus. Consider working with someone who is not just trained in hypnosis but also is a licensed therapist or psychotherapist who can bring their academic background into your session.

What can hypnosis help you with?

According to many sources including the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) which is part of the United States National Library of Medicine and a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), hypnosis is scientifically proven to help relieve both mental challenges and physical pains. Hypnosis can alleviate stress and reduce pain after surgeries, has been shown to relieve anxiety in children in the emergency room, and can be useful for managing pain associated with everything from arthritis to migraines. Hypnosis is non-invasive and gives you a way to control pain or discomfort that might otherwise seem out of your hands. Hypnosis shouldn’t be used as a substitute for medical care, but may be an excellent complementary tool that is best provided by a trained therapist or licensed medical provider. The University of Maryland Medical Center shares many conditions for which hypnosis can be useful:

    • Irritable bowel syndrome
    • Tension headaches
    • Alopecia areata
    • Asthma
    • Phobias
    • Insomnia
    • Addictions
    • Bedwetting
    • Fibromyalgia
    • Labor and delivery
    • Skin disorders, such as acne, psoriasis and eczema (atopic dermatitis)
    • Stress
    • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
    • Cancer-related pain
    • Weight loss
    • Eating disorders
    • Warts
    • Indigestion (dyspepsia)
    • Post-traumatic stress disorder
    • Smoking cessation

How is hypnosis used in therapy?

Hypnosis is a powerful tool to help clients overcome challenging issues such as anxiety, phobias, pain management, hot flashes and more. Hypnosis is also a way to help let go of addictions like smoking, overeating and gambling. In and of itself, hypnosis is not a therapy, but it can be used in conjunction with therapy to empower and encourage the person receiving it to make positive change. Some people are more susceptible to hypnosis and will benefit more from hypnotherapy than others.

According to Dr. Clifford N. Lazarus, speaking for Psychology Today, hypnosis is a “genuine psychological phenomenon that has valid uses in clinical practice … hypnosis is a state of highly focused attention or concentration, often associated with relaxation, and heightened suggestibility. While under hypnosis (i.e., in a hypnotic trance), it seems many people are much more open to helpful suggestions than they usually are.” The suggestions made in a therapeutic setting get deep into a person’s brain, beyond their conscious thinking, leading to behavior change and the ability to overcome challenges that might otherwise seem insurmountable.

What is the effectiveness of hypnosis?

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recognizes the healing power of hypnosis and its proven effectiveness for anxiety, pain control, smoking cessation, headaches and more. Hypnosis may be safe and complementary way to augment medical attention you are receiving for a chronic illness or pain, or a way to resolve an addiction or phobia that you are otherwise unable to control. Hypnosis does not work on every person. When scientists began studying hypnosis in earnest, a report published by Stanford University titled “The Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale” demonstrated that different brains respond to hypnosis in varying degrees, and a very few do not respond at all. Working with a trained psychologist, you’ll soon determine whether you are a good candidate for the healing benefits of hypnotherapy.

During a hypnotherapy session, the therapist will bring you into a state of deep relaxation in which the critical, conscious part of your brain recedes and the subconscious mind becomes alert and focused. The therapist will make suggestions, based on your intended goals, that will take root in your subconscious mind. These suggestions should affect your thinking in a positive way and empower you to make change.
