We were tutoring with Jocelyn and will continue to use her as long as she is available. Our family has used her services now for the past three years and each year she continues to grow in her knowledge. She has helped our special needs student tremendously. Our son needs the extra one one one attention due to having dyslexia and a processing disorder. Each of her sessions are tailored to him personally. She takes the time after the sessions to tell us the methods she is using, why they are helpful, and what she will do next time. In addition, Jocelyn is supportive, punctual, and flexible (in reason). We will continue to work with her as long as possible! Thank you for all of your hard work.

Mike Goodman is an exceptionally good math tutor. He has a lot of experience working with students of varying abilities and adapts to the student's needs. His training as a professional mathematician enable him to constantly share insight and tricks about how to analyze and quickly solve a wide range of math problems. Importantly, Mike teaches good problem solving technique: students learn to follow steps (and write stuff down) so they can tackle more complex problems with confidence. Mike helped our son bring his math grade up 13 points! We will use him to prepare for the ACT and SAT math tests this summer.

I’ve taken my SATs a couple of times and although I am not a bad student, I just felt that I could have done better, I knew it inside, but just could not find where it was. I got the Getting Into The Ivys tutoring program and worked with a Chelsea tutor. What I really like about my tutor is that she’s a qualified teacher and is professional and knows how to actually teach concepts properly. I really did not want to take any chances. Going to university is very important to me and my family. Susan my tutor developed a special study plan just for me, which helped me focus on my key weaknesses, without feeling de-motivated, in-fact I was so enthused by her, I actually looked forward to all my sessions. She is a brilliant tutor and I am so very grateful. I was able to increase my composite core by 100. I am very pleased.

Ragine has tutored my 5th grader that on paper has an IEP, which is written off during school. Her skills, professionalism & knowledge has allowed my son to gain things he did not get in school & yet his tutoring assisted him so that he graduated. We continue tutoring services over the summer.

Accounting is definitely not my forte so being able to have somebody to discuss the topics and send me in the right direction for my assignments has been a phenomenal experience. With at least 10 years of real experience, she is adequately equipped to deliver high quality tutoring in her respective subjects. Her professionalism and quality work made a favorable impression on me, and reflected on the grades I received for the assignments. I would not hesitate to hire her in the future, and I do plan on using her expert knowledge through the remainder of my accounting course. 10/10 Would hire again! I am so thrilled I chose the right tutor!

I am happy to express my total satisfaction with Dr. Li. She is very bright and knows her subjects well. But I am more impressed with the way she relates to students to "make learning easy." She is a natural Master Teacher with a gift for breaking down subject matter until students understand it.

    About

I have a Bachelor of Arts' degree in English. I believe that teaching is more than imparting knowledge – it is inspiring change. Good teaching fosters sense of student control over learning and interest in the subject matter. I create learning tasks appropriate to the student’s level of understanding. I also recognize the right the uniqueness of individual learners and avoid the temptation to impose “mass production” standards that treat all learners as if they were exactly the same. In order for learning to occur, students need to connect to their own prior knowledge. Connections are like building bridges between the old and new. This building bridge can be brief or in-depth as long as it serves the needs of all learners. Reassessment determines prior knowledge whereas connections provides the link between old knowledge and new knowledge. I have been teaching AP Spanish and English for 20 years including two years at the middle school level. Each student learns differently and I always adjust my methods in order to get the best results from each learner. 98% of my students raised their English / Spanish AP grade from D to A; you/your child can, too. The role of a tutor is to help the student help himself. Tutoring is the short term answer to help the student gain confidence and learning skills. In other words, my objective is more than rote learning; it is about making connections to the real world. I include appropriate character development with real world connections with every lesson. Overall, I am trained to differentiate any lesson through scaffolding techniques, as well as rigorous assessment, making sure to present appropriate and leveled instruction. I look forward to meeting your student to see if we have an academic fit.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

    • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
    • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
    • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
    • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
