Carlos was great. I had several estimates and though he was not the lowest, he was very reasonable and was the only one who would complete the entire project with drywall and painting. Very clean and professional. We were so pleased with our pendant lights, we called and requested that he come back to hang a third. It looks beautiful and we are very happy! Thanks Carlos!

Hiring Felipe was my first experience with Thumbtack, and I couldn't be more pleased. From start to finish, Felipe was extremely responsive, knowledgeable and helpful. He guided us through the process of ensuring we had the right materials available and completed an excellent quality Level 5 finish for us quickly (two days). Not only does he have great skill and craftsmanship, but he is very kind as well. We plan to use Felipe for additional drywall needs in the near future.

I gave Doug and his crew the impossible job of repainting my entire 1600 square foot condo, repairing many, many drywall issues, taking down wallpaper and covering dark and metallic paint. Not only was his estimate the lowest, he got it done in 5 days! The condo looks perfect!!! This is the only company that I will ever use. Not only are they fast and professional, Doug is a genuinely nice guy!

From scraping popcorn ceilings, painting my entire house, to filling nail holes in the walls, these guys are the absolute best. When you get drywall done, you want it done right. Residential Drywall did things quickly and professionally. They left my house feeling brand new (It's 23 years old). The ceiling was so smooth and looked like I never had popcorn before. The walls & trim were painted carefully and very well (I'm extremely picky and detailed by the way). I asked one of the guys, just for fun, if they could take down a difficult wall to open up a living space and he responded, "we can do anything you want us to." This kind of confidence is what you want when someone is redoing your home or office space. My only complaint is that I don't have enough money for them to come back and tear down some walls. I told my sister and her husband about them as well. They used them for paint and ceiling scraping as well. They have the same feedback as my wife and I. We are happy to have used Residential Drywall and will again!

Franklin did outstanding work for us installing drywall in a few rooms. Price was fair, communicated well throughout the job, and finished approximately on schedule. Also really appreciated that he recommended the option of getting material ourselves rather than paying him to do the same thing. Had everything delivered from lowes, didn't waste Franklin's time or our money. Win win. Would definitely use again.

We have had Michael's team do many different projects for us. However, the most recent one truly deserves a five star review. Michael and his team went above a beyond and the work is great. They repaired some drywall and even found the matching paint in the garage and painted it.... I thought the wall would be repaired but that I would have to paint it myself. I have recommended Michael to all my friends who have needed his services and will continue to do so.

Alan came into our home to work on an extensive Drywall project which included replacement of all ceiling drywall, finishing, painting, texturing and second-pass re-work of any areas requiring additional work. Alan was then further hired to complete post-construction patch work on drywall damaged from other construction projects. We were so impressed with his work, demeanor, work ethic, timeliness, cost, and reliability that we asked him to complete trim work throughout the house at a later date. I cannot recommend Alan highly enough. If you have a project requiring his skills, he is the person you want to complete it.

Excellent service, work, punctuality, responsiveness, and anything else you would expect from good contractors! I have been pleasantly surprised by the way Leo handled himself, and Rigo, who helped him. I have had many other contractors that did not do so well. No complaints- only compliments for these guys! Scope of work: tile, trim, paint, toilets, and even light drywall repair. Give them a call!

I hired Nando to patch a cased opening in my home that was left unfinished from an expansion project. He arrived in a timely manner and was courteous and very professional. I found his pricing very fair. He not only did a great job on the drywall repair but also installed base board trim that was needed that match the existing baseboard trim and shoe moulding that was in the room. I will definitely hire him again on many more projects.

Pernell was great and communicated well throughout the process from quote and throughout the work. Project estimate was well described with photos to illustrate as needed. This was a full deck finish restoration of about 400sq ft. I enjoyed the flexibility he provided on the options. No money was asked for upfront. Pernell showed up each day when he said he would. What I'm saying is for an independent he was totally professional and I never felt risk in his hire. Many thanks Pernell!!!

Maurice did a great job! He came out on a Sunday! We had a leaky washer bib that had totally saturated the walls & trim. He completed the plumbing repair, replaced the drywall, cleaned up the area and took photos during and after. We have and are currently using him for other projects as well. Thanks Maurice!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
