Clarence is an excellent technican I thought my AC was not functioning properly and the reason was I didn't have enough air flow to cool my rooms. Clarence went into my attic and installed 2 new ducts, turned up the fan speed on my furnace to match the needed output of the AC and now my home is very cool. He's was knowledgable about what was going on with my system and he was patient enough to thoroughly explain the situation to me; Clarence is an outstanding trouble shooting tech and I am very pleased with the results and his pricing. I felt very comfortable with him and will most definitely hire him again and refer him to family and friends that will benefit from his exceptional and professional services.

Robie showed up on time, was friendly and knowledgeable. He was able to identify the problem with the blower on our furnace fairly quickly and made repairs. Turned out one of the unit breakers was going bad but had not completely failed yet. It was letting enough power through for the unit to operate marginally but not enough to power the blower on high. He replaced the failing breaker and I got him to replace the other as well, just in case. We are now back in business! Thanks Robie!

Angelo is a top notch professional. I had an older heating and ac unit that was not cutting off after getting my ducts cleaned. Other guys came out and told me I needed to replace it. Angelo took the time to inspected the furnace and found that the board was not working and limit switch needed to be replaced. He also installed a vent for my new kitchen. If you have heating and ac needs Angelo will provide you honest and reliable service.

I can’t say enough about how pleased I am with the work Alpha Tech Mechanical has completed on my home. They performed a full system replacement including the duct work for my upstairs HVAC system. I work in the software technology field that helps supports many aspects of Facility Maintenance and have extensive knowledge of this industry. Alpha Tech Mechanical fully understands HVAC and building science in every detail and applies industry best practices in their work. In my experience with other HVAC companies they simply do “break-fix” repair but never try to or want to address overall system issues. This is in part because it may not be the most profitable approach for their business or lack on industry knowledge. Additionally, many other HVAC companies either don’t care or don’t know how ensure your HVAC system is performing to optimal efficiency and capacity. Jack and his team truly understand all of this and therefore can take a completely different approach. Alpha Tech Mechanical took their time and walked me through their thorough diagnosis they performed on my new system during the commissioning process. This ensured me that the system they installed was performing to desired specification. After all was said and done the results showed that the system was performing well beyond the manufacturer specifications. I fully accredit this to Jack and his team doing what I would consider the best quality work I have ever seen in residential HVAC. Here’s to Building Science, Thank You Alpha Tech Mechanical

I had Air Of america Cleaning to my house last week to inspect my furnace and vacuum the ducts- 15 year old home, they had never been cleaned.  They showed up ON TIME, were very professional and knowledgeable, and did a great job.  The lead tech explained what they were going to do, and he gave me periodic updates on how the job was going and how my furnace looked. No surprises when I got the bill!!!  I had scheduled a different company two weeks ago, but when they got here the quote was TWICE AS HIGH as what they quoted over the phone.  I sent them away and called Air of America.  I strongly suggest you do the same.

They were on time and did an outstanding job of cleaning our ducts for a great price. They are real experts and have done this for years! Our A/C is running great and allergies are so much better. They were even able to help us fix a pipe that was placed too close to our furnace for a little extra. We knew this was a fire hazard and we're so glad they could help! One more thing off the to do list! Great, honest company- would definitely recommend with confidence.

Before I decided on which company to use to do duct cleaning I did a lot of research on YouTube and google. First, most of the companies out there will do a switch and bait on you. The companies on Groupon and coupons you get in the mail will advertise $100 or less for duct cleaning. That is nonsense. If you have a house with at least 15 or more vents which most do, if done correctly will take at least 4 hrs or more to complete. Also it usually requires 2 or more to do the job. I don't know anyone who will do that much work for $100 or less. Common sense should let you know something is wrong. In the end after speaking with different companies and having the knowledge that I did I decided to use Service Experts Now. I have 2 boys with allergies so it was important I hired the right company. These guys are great. They really do a fantastic job. They don't miss a thing. Not only did they do a excellent job but their price was very competitive. I watched them work and I was really impressed. I highly recommend them. They are very honest and will do the job the right way.

Went above and beyond what I needed! My AC units use R22 which was unknown to me. He explained and walked me through the reading of the equipment as well as a GREAT price. He checked all my vents to ensure they were open correctly and inspected the thingies in the attic.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How long does it take to get your ducts cleaned?

The amount of time air duct cleaning takes can depend on how extensive your duct system is, how old your air ducts are, and whether they have ever been cleaned. On average, expect a standard size home (between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet) to take 2-5 hours for one to two technicians to clean. Here are the proper protocol and equipment you should expect from a professional duct cleaning service, as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency:

  • All doors and access ports opened to ensure the entire duct system is inspected and cleaned.
  • Thorough system inspection prior to cleaning to identify possible asbestos-containing materials. If asbestos is present, specially trained and equipped contractors must do the removal.
  • Use of approved vacuum equipment that exhausts particles outside of your house. If the vacuum exhausts inside your home, it must be HEPA equipment.
  • Furnishings and carpet covered and protected.
  • Soft-bristled brushes only on fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts internally lined with fiberglass.
  • Ductwork properly protected.
  • Adherence to guidelines and practices set down by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association.

How much does it cost to replace air ducts in a house?

If your air ducts have been damaged, you’ll need to replace them. The national average air duct replacement cost is $150-$280, which may not include materials. Factors such as duct material, labor, location of ducts and linear feet of ductwork will all affect your final costs. Labor costs will vary based on how accessible the ducts are and what material your ducts are made of. The least expensive duct material is a flexible, non-metallic ducting that costs approximately $1-$2 per linear foot. Flexible aluminum is generally more expensive and stronger than non-metallic ducting. Stainless steel ducting is the strongest, the least flexible (meaning installing it typically has higher labor rates), and usually the most expensive. An average price for air duct replacement could range between $35 and $55 per linear foot, including basic materials and labor. A typical single-family home has 6-10 duct runs; replacing or installing one duct run could average $150-$250 for labor.

How much does it cost to have your air ducts cleaned?

If you’re concerned about dust, allergens or mold, it may be time to have your air ducts cleaned. The national average cost for air duct cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Air duct cleaning costs will vary based on a number of factors such as your location in the country, the age and condition of your air ducts, the number of linear feet to be cleaned, and any repairs your ducts may need. HVAC cleaning companies should clearly outline what is included in their services and at what rate, so always make sure you understand and have a written agreement before work begins. Here are some examples of average air duct cleaning costs:

  • Tiered pricing for different levels of service:
    • Standard cleaning: $100, which may include truck-mounted industrial vacuums, high-pressure air wands and air snakes to clean all supply and return vents, branch lines, and main trunk lines.
    • Advanced cleaning: $200, which may include standard cleaning services, plus rotobrush or viper clean sweep in the main trunk lines.
    • Ultimate cleaning: $400, which may include advanced cleaning, plus insertion of a viper microline into all vents to force debris down the branch lines and into the main trunk lines, to be handled by the viper clean sweep. Typically, all ductwork surface is contacted, before-and-after photos are provided, and the furnace is cleaned.
  • A flat rate for unlimited vents: $289.
  • Additional fees for larger houses: $20 for each additional 500 square feet over 2,500.
