Wayne & Alisia were TOP NOTCH people from our initial inquiry to the completion of all the work. They were out here a couple days after we reached out to them for an estimate, starting the job on some woodworking we wanted to have done in our back yard. We paid exactly what we were quoted, and the job was completed when we were promised. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #BESTBANGFORYOURBUCK

I highly recommend J's Atlantic Services. We needed pressure washing, rotten wood repaired and painting. They sent a team of 2-3 guys that worked five 12 hour days. They pressure washed, replaced rotten woodwork on bay window, soffits and columns, cleaned gutters and painted all siding and trim. They finished the job with excellence and left the site clean. We are very happy with the improvements they made. My 21 year old house looks brand new!

I contacted B&C Carpentry through a referral at Home Depot in Kennesaw because I needed a bay window repaired or replaced because the windowsill had rotted. Brad returned my call quickly, and we set up a time for him to see what was really needed, and give an estimate. Even though it was nearly Christmas, and I work odd shifts, Brad ordered and installed the replacement windows (which are a huge improvement over the originals!) before the holiday! The repair/replacement included rebuilding the lower sill, and replacing some of the siding to match the rest of the house. Brad and his coworker arrived on time each day, were careful not to damage any of the old woodwork which was not going to be replaced, and cleaned up before leaving. I was so pleased, I contracted with B&C Carpentry to replace the rest of the old windows, even though they were not damaged. I will not hesitate to contact B&C Carpentry for any future needs. Ray was one of several professionals who responded to my request for a bid to do some kitchen and bathroom tile work. I explained the job and my timeline over the phone and he responded by providing me with an estimate, which was very reasonable in comparison to other bids I received over the next few days. Ray arrived as scheduled and demonstrated a great work ethic and exacting professional standards. He kept me informed throughout the job and made valuable recommendations throughout the course of the project. I am delighted with the results. Ray is an experienced craftsman with an in-depth knowledge of the building trades, and a friendly, caring manner. His honesty, fairness and diligence coupled with the outstanding nature of his work, make him my go-to guy for any future projects without the benefit of taking any other bids.

Southern Burl did an excellent job from start to finish on the built in bookcase and window seat they built in my home. I gave Drew a picture of what I wanted and he was able to recreate it down to the last detail. Mark and Drew are very professional and I will definitely hire them for future carpentry projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
