Hired on Thumbtack
During our initial phone conversation, he quoted $300 for the entire job. When he arrived, he said he had underestimated the work and asked to increase the total price to $400. I had not requested any additional work or changed the scope of the project. Since estimating mistakes can happen, I agreed to the higher price.
On the first visit, he completed the priming and some of the caulking. Several areas that should have been caulked were left unfinished, and he only used 1 of the 2 tubes of caulk I had purchased. He initially told me he would apply the 1st coat of paint that day and return later for touch-ups. About 1 hour later, he changed his mind and left without applying any paint.
After the first visit, I paid him $200. We scheduled another appointment to complete the painting, but it was postponed. We scheduled again, and it was postponed again. Each time, I rearranged my work schedule and stayed home because he had confirmed he was coming, only to receive another last-minute cancellation.
Before returning to finish the job, he demanded the remaining $200 upfront. Although the painting had not even started, I paid the balance in good faith because he refused to continue the project otherwise.
Despite receiving the full $400, the painting was never completed.
When I requested a refund for the unfinished work, he initially agreed to issue a Venmo refund. Later, he changed his position and claimed only $100 was owed based on an alleged verbal agreement that was never reflected in our Thumbtack messages. Because we could not resolve the issue, I filed a Venmo Purchase Protection claim.
After reviewing the evidence, Venmo refunded the full disputed amount of $200 in my favor.
My advice to future customers is simple: keep every conversation in writing through Thumbtack and do not rely on verbal discussions. During my project, what was discussed verbally changed on multiple occasions or was later described differently. The Thumbtack message history became my only reliable record of what had actually been agreed upon.
I tried to be reasonable throughout the entire process. I accepted the higher price after the contractor underestimated the job, accommodated every scheduling change, and paid every amount he requested. In the end, I was left with an unfinished project and had to rely on Venmo Purchase Protection to recover the money for the unfinished portion of the work.
Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this contractor
