I was referred to this company years ago by a friend because I needed a hole patched in my ceiling and they did and excellent job. A few years later I got ready to finish my basement so I called them back. I needed framing, drywall and plumbing. Todd came out and helped me design a layout that not only looked great but also maximized the living space. Todd and his crew did all the framing, drywall including ceilings and he setup plumbers to rough in the bathroom, kitchen and laundry room. I recommend Todd and Residential Drywall Inc. anytime I have the opportunity because they do quality work that speaks for itself, they are very professional, always on time, trustworthy and have great pricing as well.

Christian Shockley is the ONLY electrician you will ever need!! Master of his Trade is an understatement! He was very prompt and detailed in his quote for the work we needed, which was quite extensive. He responded quickly to all my emails. He arrived as scheduled and completed the work in 2 days as estimated. He was very professional and personable while in our home. The BEST part is he SAVED us hundreds of dollars on the list of work we needed done when compared to other quotes. We had just purchased an older home and needed the following electrical items addressed as they were listed as critical on our home inspection report. He mastered them all with ease. 1. Replace the electrical panel with a new 150 amp main breaker panel and breakers. 2. Upgrade the grounding electrode system. 3. Install a whole panel surge protector. 4. Upgrade outside outlets to GFCI 5. Upgrade kitchen outlets to GFCI 6. Make the light in the attic operational 7. Install proper covers for junction boxes in attic 8. Protect spliced wires throughout attic 9. Install wiring in dining area ceiling for chandelier. We WILL always use him for any future electrical work on our home.

A leak in my master bathroom caused water damage in my kitchen ceiling. I found Penney Brothers through Thumbtack and gave them a call. Kevin Penney came by the same day I submitted my request to give me a quote. He was very detailed in explaining what he would do and also letting me know what other potential damage the leak may have caused. I was so impressed with his detail I went ahead and hired them without getting a second quote. I never do that. A few days later they came by. He completely covered my kitchen area which helped greatly with the dust clean up. They sprayed mildewcide, replaced the area affected by the leak and painted. They cleaned up nicely and got it done in one day. I would highly recommend they and may use them for another home improvement job I am considering.

We hired Don to remove the original wallpaper from our 21 year old laundry room and repaint it. We also had him paint our kitchen and family room. He did a fantastic job for an incredibly reasonable price. If you need a painter, Don is your man. His work is meticulous, and he will treat your home like he is restoring the Cystine Chapel.

The wife and I decided to renovate our kitchen this spring. The issue is neither of us had prior experience in such a big scale project. Bkrenovation helped us tremendiously from picking up the cabinets and tiles to useful ideas on the appliances and overall design. Pricing is resonable and we (she) couldnt be any happier with the result. Thanks Bennie.

I am so thankful I hired Tracie to upgrade my home. My house was built in 2004 and the previous owners didn't upgrade anything. I was stuck with carpet throughout the house, linoleum floors in the kitchen and bathrooms along with cheap counter tops. The previous owners did, however, paint the walls some horrible brown color. The bathrooms were painted with what I call "prison cell grey." The fixtures also needed upgrading. This is the first home I ever bought, so I was overwhelmed until Tracie came into the picture. Tracie was awesome! When I asked her about paint colors, I expected an answer like, "go with a light blue," or something vague like that. Nope. Tracie provided the color code and a specific brand of paint. Tracie also recommended specific types of flooring (laminate & tiles), fixtures, back plashes and counter tops. Bonus - everything recommended came in UNDER budget! If you are looking to upgrade, improve or renovate your home, I strongly recommend Tracie. Her professionalism, attention to detail and passion were evident throughout the entire process.

Portico South has designed and built several projects for us, including a kitchen renovation and a bathroom renovation. What we liked most: Their balance of aesthetic and craftsmanship. They suggested ways to make both projects better and brought a great attention to detail in their work. Highly recommend.

We got the JLewis Construction team to come and give us a estimate on doing the Kitchen Remodel for a High End Kitchen in the Morning side area. We are a handyman team and needed to team with a good contractor. Jonathan was just what we needed to get this job going, we did all the intial demo and we needed them to get the final touches done. The tile work, the cabinet install and the granite was done by them. This was a long standing customer of ours and we didn't want to loose our relationship with her. Thank you JLewis Construction, we were more than happy to write this review.

They have refinished my floors, created a cool outdoor deck, renovated my kitchen doing some great tile-work and painting. ASR likes to get the job done right, even if it takes extra hours. Brian pays close attention to detail and makes sure you are 100% satisfied before the project is completed. Highly recommended.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

      What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

      • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
      • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
      • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
      • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
