I selected Martin to install several landscape features for my project:
- A 30ft CMU retaining wall with brick ties
- 25-30ft long boulder wall that is around 3ft tall
- Two rain gardens (90sqft and 45sqft) with amended soil and ran the gutter lines into the gardens.
Martin did a great job of explaining the entire process in detail from the specs of the wall to how the drainage will work. Rain gardens are a fairly new watershed requirement for the city of Atlanta and Martin researched the code to ensure that I would not have any issues during the site inspection.
He was also very flexible in changing the scope of work as we progressed. We were impressed by his work and ended up having him do additional work which included:
- A 25ft timber wall
- CMU wall and piers for the front porch
- Plant a Forest Pansy Redbud tree in the large rain garden
During the project, we had a fairly heavy rain and I discovered that the smaller rain garden was not properly draining into the overflow. I let Martin know and it was corrected the following day. He ended up re-positioning the overflow pipe to be the lowest point and I have had no further issues.
I almost forgot to mention that I live in the Virginia Highlands where the lots are small and the streets are very congested. Martin did a good job of managing the materials and equipment onsite to minimize the impact to the neighbors.

I hired Mr McMillan to do a modern mid century makeover front lawn. I had an idea of what I wanted but needed a great landscaper to bring my idea to reality. Martin exceeded my expectations and brought our lawn back to life. He had all the necessary equipment and took his time to make sure it was done right. We cant stop our neighbors from slowing down and parking in front of our lawn admiring the job he did. Our project consisted of completely removing all the existing overgrown shrubs and some trees about 20ft tall, laying new sod, removing areas overgrown with ivy, installing a drain box and new drainage lines, installing new stream bed, laying new rocks and new landscaping plants and shrubs.

Martin first came to our rescue in 1997, when we needed major landscaping for our new swimming pool. The area on one side of the pool needed building up, and to keep it intact and level a wall roughly 4' high was required. Martin did the job right, installing a drainage system behind the timber wall and securing it with over 30 deadmen. He also brought in loads of topsoil as needed and ordered and delivered the sod we selected. As a bonus, he helped us lay the sod.
About a decade later we hired Martin to design and build a long garden that extends from the pool up one side of the house and ends at the driveway. At the latter point he constructed a raised garden that curves beautifully around a flagstone plot. He built a stone wall fronting the garden that tapers to the ground, in harmony with the slope of the land. He selected all the plants and flowers, keeping in mind our wish for low maintenance as well as beauty. The gardens and the landscaping generally is something any artist would admire, if not envy.
A few years later we asked Martin to build another raised garden in front of our house and to fix the sinking front steps. In addition, we wanted a flagstone sidewalk to replace the builder's concrete pathway. We also wanted the porch to be surfaced with flagstone. Again, Martin came through, rebuilding the porch foundation and laying out a flagstone path that has truly elevated our home's attractiveness.
I wish I could think of something he could've done better to make this review seem more credible, but honestly, I can't. His rates are often lower than most, and his work reflects the dedication of a landscape artist. If need to add lasting beauty to your home you should give Martin McMillan serious consideration.

I was very pleased with Mr. McMillan. He was the only landscaping company out of 3 that agreed to came and give an estimate through thumbtack however, was the only one that actually showed up. He was very professional and I felt very comfortable with him He did my estimate and I told him I would call him for the job. I did call he 2 months later and was worried that I couldn't reach him by phone and I left him an e-mail and he responded immediately. I was happy because I certainly didn't want to give the job to any one else especially not any of the people that never showed up for our initial estimate. He did an awesome job at my house, He took his time and cleaned up all of his mess. he gave me great advise and I'm very happy I listened to him. My neighbors are already complimenting me on my yard.

Martin and I have worked on a couple of landscape projects (I'm a landscape designer). He performed grading (machine & hand), drainage, irrigation, plant installation (large trees, shrubs, ground covers, perennials & annuals), and sodding. He's reliable, knowledgeable, and an around "good guy." It's been a pleasure working with him.
