Introduction: I am certified and experienced in Elementary Education Reading, and English as a Second Language. I've been teaching English as a Second Language for over ten years now to wonderful people from all over the world. My goal for my students is always the same - to help them learn to speak English accurately and fluently in a relaxed and friendly environment. Along with correct pronunciation and meaning, my students learn how to understand and use American expressions so they can communicate well at work and also in social situations with American friends. I've enjoyed teaching English in large group settings at the Norcross Human Services Center, in small group settings at my church, and now to individual students at the Suwanee library. I recently visited an adult ESOL class taught by Janet McPhilimy. Several countries were represented. I was so impressed with her ability to communicate, and engage the students. Her lesson was interesting, enjoyable, and reflected her many years of teaching experience. Janet cares about her students and considers their overall situation as she helps them to achieve their goals. She is thoughtful, approachable, and is a good resource for academic support and families in transition.

Ms. Janet is excellent at what she does. My daughter was struggling in school and failing. Through tutoring, she pulled her grades up and her confidence rose as well. No matter the task, Janet was qualified. Her commitment to my daughter made all the difference. She studies the AKS, communicates with the teachers, keeps us well informed of session progress, and ensures success by teaching on an individual level. We are very impressed with her work and excited to see further development in our girl. She's the best thing to happen to our daughter's education.

Janet has been the tutor/nanny for my two elementary school kids for the past year and a half. Janet is patient and observant and establishes a joyful and productive learning relationships with my kids. I see huge improvement in my daughters reading and her speech. What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Usually a parent will contact me by phone or email. We have a conversation about their child, his/her learning experience and what his needs are now. If the parent wants to meet and interview me in person, we can do that. If I am hired, we plan a date and time to begin.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Batchelor's degree and certification - Elementary Education, Learning Disabilities Graduate work - Brenau University Graduate work and training - MidAmerica N. University Camperdown Academy
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I've always taught in private elementary schools. If a parent asked if their child could stay after school for tutoring, I was always glad to help. It was very gratifying when the student "got it" and my joy confirmed 'this is what I was made to do'. With further training I was able to trade my classroom for a tutoring room teaching small groups and individuals throughout the school day.
