That’s why Thumbtack teamed up with popular dating apps BLK, Chispa, OkCupid and Yuzu to ask singles which home habits feel like green flags, which ones give people the ick, and which simple upgrades can make your space feel date-ready.
The result? Your home is basically your dating profile — sometimes revealing more than even a first date could.
The story your home tells
An overwhelming majority of daters (94%) said someone’s home is an important sign of long-term compatibility. Think of it this way: your home showcases your values and interests the same way your profile photos and prompts do. And the good news? Singles aren’t expecting perfection. When asked about the biggest green flags in a potential partner’s home, here’s what singles said:

According to our survey, here are the top red flags that can make someone second-guess the relationship before it even gets off the ground:

Daters said they’re more likely to come back if you have fun games (33%), a cute pet (17%), or a great music collection (11%). Comfort consistently won out over flash.
That said, there is such a thing as too much personality. One dater told us they spotted a life-sized mannequin; another, a shrine to Martha Stewart. Let’s just say, balance is key.

Nearly half (40%) of daters admitted to ending a relationship over someone’s home. The biggest icks?
It doesn’t stop there. Long-term habits matter even more: never doing laundry (64%) or not owning cleaning supplies (62%) are major red flags that would make someone reconsider moving in together.

Practical skills are the new sexy.
While clean may be the baseline, handiness is the real glow-up. Nearly 9 in 10 singles said being handy is attractive. Cooking, fixing things around the house, and DIY skills aren’t just useful, they’re downright hot. Some of the most appealing “green flag” profile prompts included:

3. Living room upgrade. 1 in 4 singles said their dream partner has a super comfy couch. Translation: skip the bar cart, invest in cozy seating. Consider reupholstering a favorite chair, adding throw blankets, or displaying a stack of board games (the #1 thing that makes people want to come back after a first date). 4. Fix small things. Nothing kills attraction faster than a space that feels neglected, with about 1 in 7 singles even calling unfinished home projects a red flag. The fix? Small tasks like patching drywall, tightening squeaky doors, or hanging art send the message that you’ve got it together. Hiring a handyman averages $60–$70/hour.
5. Bathroom refresh. A dirty bathroom was the #1 red flag and over half of daters said no shower curtain would be a dealbreaker. A few simple DIY swaps like a fresh shower curtain, crisp towels, re-grouted tile, or even guest-friendly extras like candles can take this space from pass to partner material.
