Shanco is a very honest and reliable company. It is very evident that Brett is a skilled and knowledgable technician. Brett replaced our electric furnace and hot water heater with a natural gas furnace and an On-Demand hot water heater. Shanco is raising the bar for the industry in terms of quality, speed, and customer experience. In addition to the wonderful customer experience, our energy bill has lowered dramatically!

Dave arrived on time. He diagnosed the problem quickly, made the necessary repairs with efficiency and expertise. In addition, when asked he advised me of solutions for other issues I was experiencing and provided excellent information. I will use his service in the future and refer him to friends and family.

Great guy- came on Sat no extra charge and was reasonably priced. Also very honest. Brought him out as second opinion and said I did not need to spend $600 on repairs other guy claimed.

I was very pleased with the job Todd and the insulation specialists at Four Seasons did for me. The free energy audit (that Idaho Power charges $99 for) registered a Pre-R-Value of 19 and after adding the blow in fiberglass insulation the Post-R-Value registered at 49. Installingthe brushless, super quiet Remington solar attic fan with the amazing extended warranty and the attic baffles were part of the job and qualified the entire cost of the project to be eligible for a tax savings. They were quick and efficient, dispite having to repair a mouse hole in a heat duct and discovering a leak and puddle of water in my crawl space. They discovered problems I hadn’t even been aware of and I was happy to get them taken care of before more damage was done! I also appreciated them showing me the forms I would use to get a tax break on my state and federal returns and showed me about how much I could save there. They gave me a bid and didn’t charge me extra dispite having to put in more time than they expected because of the problems they encountered in my crawl space. I’d say they went the extra mile and I appreciate the through job and good work they did.

I recently purchased a home in Eagle that was 90% completed. I hired Rich Atwood and his company to come in and complete what was needed to get a final mechanical inspection. This included furnaces, hot water tanks, chimney enhances, fireplaces and other miscellaneous projects. During his work on this home, market value of over $2,000,000, he and his employees have been an absolute joy to work with. At all points in the project he has been fair in his pricing and most importantly, excellent in his knowledge and ability to get the job done. This was not an easy project, as he had to pick up where the builder had left off. I would recommend Rich Atwood highly to anyone looking for an honest quote and tremendous dependability and work ethic. He has been working in the Valley for many years and I am sure his company will be around for many more to come.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

  • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
  • The temperature cannot be regulated.
  • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
  • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
  • The thermostat isn’t working.
  • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.
