About
I have been teaching drum set lessons for 20 years and have had students go on to prestigious music schools, as well as be lifelong hobbyists. I teach all styles and specialize in jazz. I love to empower students of all ages, even as young as 3, learn to internalize how to grow while having fun with their instruments. I have had students stick with me for more than 12 years regardless of where I have moved (I am available for Skype lessons and they work just as well.). I'm always willing to work something out financially, so I use a sliding-scale method of payment where appropriate.

I started learning the drums recently in my 30s and I was really skeptical about doing online classes because I'd never done a music lesson online before. Alex is an incredible teacher. He is patient, professional, highly skilled, and has a great approach to teaching that would suit both younger and older students. He is able to tailor lessons to fit your experience and adjust based on how much time you can commit to practicing. Weve been meeting for several months and I've had zero issues with the digital format. Highly recommend working with Alex if you're looking to learn jazz or rock drumming.

Alex (Mr. Alex as my son calls him) is an excellent teacher. My 10-year old son has been learning from Mr. Alex for more than a year in a virtual environment. My son has also been learning Indian classical drums for the past 5 years. and Mr. Alex utilized my son’s percussion foundation to build a drumming curriculum that was best suited for my son. Mr. Alex started teaching him the very basics and has progressed him to more complex drumming techniques. Mr. Alex is a very versatile teacher and has introduced my son to the technique of drumming, exposing him to the various genres, as well as introducing him to reading music. Mr. Alex exudes positivity and has an encouraging approach all the while correcting and reinforcing proper technique. He has introduced my son and me to various exponents in jazz percussion and has encouraged the importance of listening to music. My son looks forward to his class weekly and is truly enjoying learning from Mr. Alex. We feel very fortunate to be learning from Mr. Alex, a talented and versatile musician who maintains a strong emphasis on teaching and encouraging young aspiring musicians. He does this with incredible grace, patience, and a great deal of positive reinforcement.

I’ve been taking online drum lessons with Alex, and they’ve been incredibly effective. Before starting, I had never done any drumming at all, and Alex has been amazing at meeting me exactly where I’m at. He’s an awesome, patient teacher who’s incredibly knowledgeable and clearly knows exactly what he’s doing. He explains things in a way that’s easy to understand, is very easy to get along with, and can work with any skill level, from complete beginners to more advanced players. Even in an online format, the lessons feel personal and productive. I’ve made noticeable progress and highly recommend Alex to anyone looking to learn drums.

Alex is probably one of the nicest and easiest to work with instructors you could ask for. I’ve been taking lessons for about a little under a year now and I can’t wait to get even better. This is remote teaching (through the computer or phone) unless you happen to live in his area but I’ve found it to make pretty much no difference as if we were in the same room together, he communicates clearly about what you should work on and how to work on it both in and out of lessons. Would highly recommend getting him as a teacher

When I started remote drum lessons with Alex, I was a complete beginner, I knew nothing about drums. From day one, Alex has been incredibly patient, supportive, and always willing to listen to any questions I have. He breaks things down in a way that makes sense, and whenever I struggle to grasp something, he always finds a way to help me have that breakthrough moment. One of my biggest challenges has been staying consistent with practice, but Alex never fails to motivate me. His advice always hits the mark and keeps me inspired to come back stronger each time. To me, Alex is more than just a drum teacher, he’s a mentor and a great friend. I’m really grateful to be learning from him. 10/10 would definitely recommend!!!

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

    I do have a sliding scale but my general rate is $75/hour.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

    I try to assess exactly what level a student is at. Then I proceed to try and find any "holes" in their knowledge. Then I devise an organized approach to build the holes into strengths while turning the strengths into GREAT strengths:) I also need to know both how much the student is willing to practice and what styles they are truly interested in. Beyond that, I spend a great deal of lesson time trying to coach the student and reveal to them what excellent practicing ACTUALLY looks like. This process really helps people develop great practice habits.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

    Outside of receiving my Master's in Jazz Performance at The California Institute of the Arts, I have studied with some of the greatest teachers in the world. This includes John Riley, Eric Harland, Bill Stewart, Bob Gullotti, Joe LaBarbera, Damion Reid, Gregory Hutchinson and more. I have a very earnest desire to understand the best way to teach concepts that a lot of teachers insist "can't be taught". I disagree and have created systems to codify aspects of drumming language to simplify this process so the student can truly learn to internalize vocabulary to express his or herself.
