We had Al install 5 ceiling fans and 1 bathroom light - he did a great job! Even after I miscommunicated part of the project, he and Frank were very professional and fixed the problem at no extra charge! The work was done over a couple of days, and each time Al was punctual, worked quickly and efficiently, and offered to clean up after himself. The price was very reasonable compared to other quotes I got, and on the one room that required drywall cutting, Al did a great job minimizing the need for repair work. The house looks and feels much better, and I absolutely recommend Al (and Frank!) Thank you so much! Allie

Reese & Christian handled extensive plaster repair that was damaged from electrical work in an old house. They were very professional and courteous. They did well to communicate the work before hand and were great about checking in with us along the way to make sure we were updated about the work and had the opportunity to answer any questions. Reese also did extra research for us about ongoing work that we are interested in which was very much appreciated. We will definitely use them for future work!

Priced a fixed price and stuck to it Helped with deck removal and didn't damage the deck. Offered adding the clean out and gave me time to compare costs on the internet. He was offering at half the cost and let me know it wasn't necessary because the current repair is better than the original that lasted 30 years. Stopped work and explained all important steps. Took the time to explain the current status when I got curious. Had the help and tools for everything. Showed the camera view from the house to the sewer when the job was finished. Replaced the deck boards and power washed the deck so it was better then the start. Demonstrated great pride in his work.

Came in to install 2 light fixtures that I purchased for $140+. Ended up fixing the 2 existing fixtures instead for $150 (minor repairs) and I returned 2 new fixtures to Home Depot - saving me $140 on new parts. Really pleased w/ Andy's Electric.

Needed the front door lock to a building repaired/replaced. Jim was responsive and came out within the day. He kept me in the loop completely which I appreciated since I never met him face to face. Jim was accommodating and took care of everything. Price did change from the initial quote but that was because we needed to end up buying a new lock. Would definitely use him again.

Daris is fantastic! He arrived on time, was professional and very thoughtful about how he approached his work. I asked him to repair an antique secretary that belonged to me great grandfather. He was so thoughtful about how he repaired the piece that you would have thought it was something he owned. I will definitely recommend Daris and absolutely have hi back for future projects!!!

Patrick was one of the first to reply to my Thumbtack lawnmower repair request, and everything went better than expected. He was able to schedule a time sooner than I expected, he completed the repair quickly, and offered a couple helpful suggestions for use and maintenance. I will definitely call Patrick for my next lawnmower maintenance. - Mike in Rolling Meadows

Gus came out the same day that we spoke on the phone. He was punctual each day that he arrived and suggested the needed repairs rather than taking advantage of me and installing something I did not need! And the repairs cost almost half of what he originally quoted! I've already solicited his help with other projects

Kind of expensive. Service charge should be waived if repairs are done. Just my opinion.

The guys did a great job repairing our outside light. The wiring for one of the lights was done non-traditionally but they were able to figure it pretty quickly.

As a homeowner for the past twenty years - I’ve dealt with many contractors - many of them have been dishonest and over priced. Dwayne is far better than the rest. I hired him to redo the caulking in three of my bathrooms as I’m getting ready to sell my house. Dwayne went above and beyond the call of duty - not only did he repair the caulking but also helped me to identify repairs that needed to be done. He fixed my home within my budget. He was kind, considerate and very patient. I appreciated his work and honesty and will be hiring him for work in the future.

We had the best experience, would highly recommend. Rick was able to complete all the jobs we asked of him (many thrown at him on the spot), he was super helpful and knowledgeable of all the things we needed repaired. He was patient with us, worked with our schedule to meet us at the times we needed, and just a genuine nice person. Can't recommend him enough!

Reagan did an amazing job with my air conditioning cooling project. He is the kind of handyman professional that anyone would like to have as their "Go To Guy." He can handle virtually any project without costing an arm and a leg. He even supplied the material - which meant no hustle or bustle for me. Once he gets started on your job, he works continuously. I was sure that I was going to have to spend time helping him with the project - but I did not and it was worry free He said, "no worries" I have it all under control." He was even able to cart the old condenser away. I will definitely request Reagan for all of my future home improvement projects!!! Reagan is someone that I knew instantly was a man of integrity and worthy of my trust. I didn't feel the need to hover or hide the family jewels. I wish all contractors were like Reagan!!! So, please hire Reagan for your home improvement projects, but I can tell you right now he will be unavailable, if I have my druthers, because the very next time that I have a home improvement project He will be my "Go To Guy!!!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
