Sherry is a wonderful dog trainer. It was an absolute pleasure dealing with her. Unfortunately due to some family issues we were forced to get rid of the dog. I would definitely recommend her to anyone.

I'm convinced we have the best dog walker ever! She is so sweet and so great with our dog. Our dog (who judges people) immediately warmed to her. Even when we have had to work late or something came up she was there to check on him as a favor to us. Words cannot express how much we appreciate and are thankfully to have found her, we owe much to her!

Working with Chris has been an absolute joy. If you are looking for a trainer for your dog, you will not believe how big a help Chris will be for you and your dog. For example: I was walking Kona down the sidewalk when someone with her dog asked if I used a trainer because Kona was the best behaved dog she had ever seen. She was so impressed, she reached out to Chris for her own dog! We could tell within minutes of talking with Chris that he truly cares about the dogs he works with and about us as the parents. His passion for dogs is clearly evident and his knowledge and ability to help matches his love of dogs. When we first were looking for a trainer, part of it was due to wanting to make sure we were teaching her correctly, and part was due to a resource guarding. After we had our first session with Chris, the resource guarding issue was taken care of in about 5 minutes! He also helped us significantly in how she plays with other dogs, she walks next to me, does tricks on command, and he helped with how she behaves around the house. Strongly recommend using Chris!

Jeanie Murray: Well, seven years ago Tom McMurchie worked with me and my 1-year old Labradoodle, Rush, in Phoenix AZ. I don't have adequate words to explain how wonderful the experience was. Tom was knowledgeable, professional, patient, humane, and just darn perfect. He trained me as well to make Rush an awesome, well-mannered family member. Then, Tom moved to Chicago. Rush is 8 years old (still perfect), but Tom has always been available for me to talk to him on the phone with dog-training advice. Then we brought a second Labradoodle into our home at 8 weeks old, Reagan. Do I ever wish Tom was still here to work with me and Reagan, who is a work in progress (almost 3 years old now). Actually, Tom did advise from afar when I had questions about Reagan. If you are looking for that perfect person to work with you and your dog, don't look any further than Tom McMurchie. Thanks, Tom!

Nicole at Great Pet Vacations was a Godsend to our family. Our 14 month old yorkie poo was disobedient and had awful manners. We did not have the skills to change the situation. In June, we did 9 days of board and train with Nicole and we all were amazed at the initial results. Cocoa immediately was more reliable with potty training, would not cry in her cage and did not attempt to escape her pen. In July, she went back for the additional 12 days of the board and train program and can now sit, lay, target, walk on a leash, leave an item alone and is a calmer more obedient dog. Nicole is a miracle worker and takes her time demonstrating how to continue working on reinforcing the behavior with the owners to ensure continued success at home. She spent more than an hour with us at the intake consultation in order to understand our training goals. In addition, she spent more than 2 hours upon exit. It is clear she loves the animals she cares for, treats boarded dogs as her own, and is a superb dog trainer. This experience was every thing I hoped for and more than I expected. We plan to continue training sessions with Nicole and give her our highest recommendation to others.

I needed help with my GSD puppy. Yana helped with obedience, redirection, and even taught me how to clip his nails and give him a bath without him trying to kill me haha. She also taught me how to use toys to train him, and it is his favorite way to train now. Chicago Dog Mentor is an apt name!!! I still text her sometimes for advice and to check in and she is always very helpful.

My husband and I are new dog owners and Lindsey has been a great help to us. We have taken classes with her and she has come to our home for private training. We knew nothing and Lindsey has patiently given us easy to understand instruction on how to be good dog parents. The dogs respond so well to her. She is always available to answer questions. Lindsey is professional, kind to us and our dogs, and has a tons of knowledge to share. We plan on continuing both classes and private sessions.

Vanessa has helped sit for my dogs when I was out of town for work on several occassions. She is very responsible and trustworthy. I had all faith my dogs were in good hands during my absence. I would recommemd her highly as the BEST! Plus, my dogs were spoiled with LOVE! Much better than boarding with the flexibility and comfort of them staying at home.

In the first year of his life, my Great Dane had worked his way through two dog trainers and five dog walkers. The latest trainer- a certified animal behaviorist, had recommended we put out 9 month old puppy on prozac. My husband and I were against the idea, but decided to have the conversation with our vet. He absolutely refused and then recommended we talk to Kyra. Fast forward two years. Thanks to Kyra (and Comfy K9s) we watched our misunderstood, misbehaved puppy grow into a respectful, loving, well behaved family member. When it comes to training, except to work. Kyra takes her role very seriously. She won’t let you fail your dog. The number one thing that separates her from any other trainer, behaviorist, dog walker- I've worked with is her passion. She wants to help and she'll get it done any way it takes. She reads. She studies. She asks questions. The training is customized to your dog’s individual needs. And, she truly cares about you and your dog. When everyone gave up on our dog, she was there. She’s reliable. I know I can call her anytime and Comfy K9s will take care of us. (They're actually on my emergency contact list!) Kyra is trustworthy. She’s genuine. She will make your dog shine.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

          • What type of training methods do you use?
          • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
          • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
