- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
It depends on the service requested. Dog Training - We will meet and talk about what your current issues are and develop a plan to modify these behavioral issues. Then we will work with your dog; I will demonstrate and then help guide you until you are comfortable and confident with each exercise. Once we are finished working with your dog, we will go over everything from that lesson making sure everything is fully understood. Dog Walking - We will set up dates and times for the walks as well as go over any special requests like "training walks" or "runs". After that, all scheduled walks will be positive and and structured to your desires. Dog Sitting - We will meet and go over the time frame, all of your dog's needs, and the locations of any food, medications, potty spots, etc... While you are gone everything will be taken care of as it would if you were still home, and you will be updated with photos and videos to reassure you all is well.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have lived with and been around dogs my entire life, doing basic training with family dogs growing up was my introduction to what would turn into my dream career. I began dog walking and sitting in 2010, and I would practice my dog training skills on every client's dog. The next step was finding a quality mentor, which came in the form of Cathryn Jurewicz. Cathy has 26+ years of experience including basic obedience, agility, rally, and CGC evaluations. I apprenticed under her for six months, followed by another four years working together and learning every day; throughout my apprenticeship and after, the primary external learning sources were B.F. Skinner Ian Dunbar Karen Pryor and Patricia McConnell's works. Since my first job as a dog trainer, I went on to be a manager and head dog trainer at two separate daycare and boarding facilities; at each one I created and ran dog training programs. The in home dog training program was launched while I was contracting with the daycare and boarding facilities, and Best In Home Dog Services was registered in April of 2015. I have trained, walked, and cared for more dogs than I can count; this has given me extensive experience with most breeds, many of them with special behavioral or medical needs.
