With the passing of my mother, it was time for me and my two sisters to sell the family home. The house was dated. We were very fortunate to find Ken. He treated my parent’s house like it was his own, not like most contractors that have a , “That’s good enough to get paid” attitude. Many of the rooms had 30 year old wallpaper on them, Ken’s team expertly removed the wallpaper, repaired the walls to the point that you cannot tell they ever had wallpaper on them. After the wallpaper removal, Ken’s team painted the entire inside of the house, including the basement walls and basement floor. Many people have come by and commented, “I can’t believe how nice it looks, it’s a real improvement.” We were so impressed with Ken’s work that we hired him to paint the 48 year old aluminum siding and shutters. The siding and shutters look like they did back in 1966. If you are looking for a contractor that puts your needs far out front of his, Ken is your man.

I would recommend Brian to everyone. He has very reasonable rates, came right on time when he said he would, called first as I had asked him to, and did a great job with everything I needed done. And he did everything quick and safely. No damage to walls or furniture which is especially important to me since I rent. Very nice guy too. Thanks Brian!

Jesus did an amazing job for us. Painting vaulted walls. Staining a deck and sanding and coating a metal winding staircase outside. His crew was neat, and careful. They painted a stairway wall that was Chinese red.,walls that were filled with art and wall mounted tv all had to be removed. The repairs were not visible. I was impressed that the job was completed before my deadline. The price was very fair, I compared to others in the area. I would recommend his company and will use them again.Totally trustworthy and honest. I was given updates in a timely fashion and it all was done with a very pleasing attitude and respect for my home. L.B. Hoffman estates Illinois

Jacek is a dream. I have a 1925 2-flat with original woodwork throughout. When I hired Jacek it was clear that he was going to give my home the level attention that no one else would. He has led the effort in restoring its details throughout to perfection since I bought it. I'll hire no one else to paint and restore. When anyone walks into my home they all are amazed by the color and the wood work. It's perfect. When Jacek takes your job on it will be done right; the walls will be prepped and primed before painting so the surface is perfect and the final application is beautiful. This means it's a multistage process which requires time. It's so worth it.

Joe did a great job on my bathroom! He started it the next day and got the job completed in 2 days! New toilet vanity, painted walls and trim, and hung a new light fixture! Professional, clean, and completed the job under budget! He is coming back this week to install new flooring and trim in the family room.

I had old tile to be removed and new one to be installed. A wall where the fuse box is, had a hole. It was replaced by Ed and his crew did nice work and very reasonable. Now my laundry room looks better than before. I'm definitely hiring him for my future projects.

Edmond Fernandez helped me with the restoration of my 1865 home in Lincoln Park. Over a period of six months or so, he totally reconstructed my large dining room and living room. Both had been misused and abused by the people who owned the house prior to its purchase by my husband's family in 1959. In the dining room, he reconstructed walls and ceiling and removed an extraneous closet that had been bumped into the room. He took considerable time and painstaking effort to repair the damaged plaster crown molding, replacing what was missing or unrepairable with perfectly matched foam. He also hung the wallpaper in this room, straightened the large arch between living room and dining room and installed salvaged curved corner molding in the archway. Edmond also restored and redecorated a small study downstairs, installing much-needed closet and storage space, and did the same for my master bedroom. A year before all of this, he restored the walls, floor and ceiling in my kitchen, installing insulation where it had never been. Edmond has also been very helpful in finding plumbers, electricians and other workmen as needed. Edmond was always on time and spent long hours on these projects...on one occasion I got up at 5 a.m. and found him downstairs still painting! All of his work is very high quality. He is also as neat as it is possible to be, keeping disruption and mess to a minimum. His attention to detail is superb...he is a true craftsman and I can't recommend him highly enough!

I had my daughter's room painted. He did an excellent job. He also repainted the wood work on her windows with white paint and they turned out beautiful. He was very helpful in telling me what paints we should use and gave lots of good advice as to how to remove wallpaper before the paint job. Very friendly and gave us a fair price. I would recommend and would have them come back and paint my other rooms. Thank you!

Jim was great! He was so fast at responding to my messages/phone calls and easy to schedule an appointment with. He gave me his discount at Sherwin Williams so I could go pick out the paint myself (I'm a bit controlling like that). He worked in our busy crossfit gym and was so personable and nice. He even offered to come back the following day once everything had dried if there were spots that needed a touch up. We will definitely be working with him again!

Good Day construction removed my Aunt's old deck and built a new one for her. He did a beautiful job! I love how everything was done in a timely manner and great clean up after the work was finished. Will most definitely be calling him for some possible work in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best way to remove wallpaper?

There are several proven methods for wallpaper removal; each has its pros and cons, but some are definitely easier. Peeling is usually the least painful, followed by soaking and stripping. Dry-stripping is the next most time-consuming, and steaming the most work. The average wallpaper removal job costs between $360 and $560. The method of removal can affect the cost, as steaming takes longer than peeling and will therefore typically cost more. Peeling wallpaper off is usually the quickest method. To see if your wallpaper can be peeled off, try gently edging up a corner and carefully peeling the paper off the wall in strips. If you can’t peel, then you’ll have to score and strip it, either by dry-stripping or by soaking and then stripping. Plaster walls can withstand moisture and can stand up to soaking and stripping, but drywall should not be soaked. For very stubborn wallpaper, steaming may be necessary, which is time-consuming but effective. If you prefer not to attempt these methods yourself, wallpaper removal pros have the proper tools and experience to quickly take down wallpaper and also repair any damage to your walls.

How much does it cost to remove wallpaper in a room?

The national wallpaper removal cost averages $360-$560, which will typically include multiple rooms. Pros often charge by the square foot to remove egregious wallpaper that is long past its prime. Wallpaper removal cost may range anywhere from 60 cents to $1.50 or more per square foot. A pro may estimate removal costs ranging between $160 and $300 for a medium-sized room. Costs can vary due to ceiling height, and some pros add a skim coat to make repainting or re-papering smoother. Here are some examples of average costs to remove wallpaper:

  • Foyer: 36-120 square feet, $21.60-$180.
  • Powder room: 16-36 square feet, $9.60-$54.
  • Living or dining room: 120-252 square feet, $72-$378.
  • Family room: 192-384 square feet, $115.20-$576.
  • Bedroom: 100-224 square feet, $60-$336.
  • Guest bath: 45-84 square feet, $27-$126.
  • Master bedroom: 168-384 square feet, $100.80-$576.
  • Master bath: 54-160 square feet, $32.40-$240.

Once the old wallpaper is gone, the average cost to install new wallpaper is $240-$350.
