They were able to fit me in while they we're on another assignment. I didn't expect the cost for the job to be as expensive as it was. Julio'so was the best quote amongst initial 3. We're just moving in & the previous owners let the yard get out of control. A mini jungle was developing. I was extremely pleased with the huge difference made by Julio's team. You could actually see the house and not the massive overgrown weeds, vines, ivy, mixed with flowers and plants. Prior to Julio's rescue, I was tempted to chop down everything and start from scratch. I don't have a green thumb so who knows what that would've looked like. They guaranteed their work. Accommodations were made to meet my personal preferences. My property is now beautifully manicured! I'm especially satisfied with the simple payment options available. To top it all off they even treated the small tomato gardens on my patio. I can't say enough. I'm so happy with Julio's looking forward doing business with them soon.

I worked with Rodolfo. He came on time for the quote. We agreed to a fare price for the work. He and his crew arrived on time the day of service and did an excellent job. My services involved fall clean up which consisted of a gutter clean, leaf and garden bed cleanup, mow and edging of lawn.

I can’t say enough about Carolina and her team! We live in Chicago, but have a goodly piece of property for the city. Our regular guy has taken a sabbatical from residential projects so I was scrambling to find someone who a) knew plants b) had a crew and c)had an eye. To be frank, my garden looked a bit like Ms. Haversham’s after all the rain this season. Weeds everywhere—horrible! Carolina Irani responded to my desperate plea and offered a quote that I felt was just a tad high—but after reviewing her credentials I decided to move forward. I was impressed by her extraordinary communication! Great follow up, lots of emails back and forth as I tried to describe what I needed to have done. Uber responsive! We settled on a date that worked for both of us (took about two weeks) but she always offered lots of alternatives. When the crew arrived, what really impressed me is that she herself spent about an hour making sure we were all on the same page. She is a lovely, calm, professional woman who clearly knows her stuff. I am a gardener and my worst nightmare is somebody who pulls out a plant that took me 4 years to grow because they didn’t know what it was! Not Carolina. This woman knows her stuff!!! Over the 4-5 hours I saw 3 crew members working non stop. Boy are they organized! Somebody pruning, somebody cleaning, somebody trimming. A well oiled machine. Plus, she suggested edging on the garden beds (YAY!) which made everything have a really pulled together look. I could not BELIEVE how beautiful everything was. Now, I can begin the process of refurbishing the beds and restoring the grass. She even trimmed low hanging branches on my trees. When I got home tonight I took a moment to pause. My fairyland garden is taking shape again! Thanks Carolina and crew. If you are considering hiring her, DO it. You won’t be disappointed. I’ve further engaged her for bi monthly maintenance. A joy to work with and a job extremely well done!!!

Joni Pawlek of My Secret Garden redesigned my garden, and landscaped my back yard. She had great ideas, incorporating my ideas, and improving on them. The flowers she brought were beautiful, and healthy...they were thoughtfully placed in areas perfect for them in appearance, and based on their needs. After she finished with the back, I had her redesign the front of the house. Joni was a pleasure to work with. Pleasant, professional, and prompt. It was a good experience for us, and we will continue to give her our landscaping business.

Melissa helped us design our backyard. Her knowledge of plants is extensive and she offered great suggestions for creating a beautiful landscape and garden that suited our style. All the plants we put in are thriving and look better every season. For the past two years since the installation of her design, my family and I enjoy using the backyard space more than ever. Our backyard is now an extension of our living space where we gather to with friends and family. Thanks, Melissa!

Pat listened, had a vision, created a plan, worked hard and completely transformed my yard. My lot is now a mini "Botanic Garden" and a focal point of the neighborhood. I love it, couldn't have done it alone and highly recommend Pat Bernard!

Amy was wonderful to work with. We were in desperate need of somebody to come up with a design that would work in certain spaces. She was very professional, courteous, fast, and reasonably priced. She even delivered everything. While we chose to plant it ourselves, she placed everything where it should be planted and even helped us make last minute changes. I highly recommend Amy!

The guys did a fabulous job redoing our from stoop and walkway. They exceeded our expectations on our front yard. Our back patois with the fire pit is the hit of the neighborhood. Mike did a great job recommending plants and shrubs. We absolutely love the butterfly garden he suggested.

Square Root helped me finalize our front and rear lamscaping. We had done a little but each year with another landscaper it it had resulted in a very choppy look. Jason and his team created better flow, bricked out a grilling space, ordered and installed beautiful custom iron trellises, built screening for the AC units, and built custom planter boxes for the front parkway that have really enhanced our curb appeal. We had them come back to install a windo box and to do seasonal plantings in the front to keep everything looking fresh! Amanda works miracles with a planter box!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
