Introduction: Hi I’m Jonathan, a Bassist and Singer-Songwriter in Chicago, IL. I graduated from the University of Chicago in 2020 with a degree in Music Theory and Composition. Since then, my skills as a writer and instrumentalist have taken me all over the country playing different kinds of R&B, Jazz, Pop, Rock, and Latin music. My work has also been featured in a number of international press outlets and Chicago radio stations. In my bass teaching practice, I endeavor to share the skills and experience I have cultivated with my students. It is my belief that no matter how far along we are in the journey of music, it has something to offer each of us. I also believe that every learner is different. By crafting my lesson plans individually for each student, I help the people I work with to discover their own learning style and reach their goals. It’s great to sound good on your instrument, but it’s even better to sound like yourself! Whether you’re just starting on the instrument or looking to pursue more advanced techniques, I have the skills as both a player and a teacher to get you there. Have only had good experiences with Jonathan so far. He is extremely knowledgeable about anything music related and can adapt to teaching different styles/genres the student wants to play. The lessons are loosely structured to help the student improve based on their needs. Jonathan is extremely patient and takes time explaining concepts so that there is no confusion. During the lessons, I learn more than just bass techniques/how to play bass tabs but also, how to start thinking about the theory behind why certain basslines sound good and how I can incorporate that into my own playing. I would have no issues recommending Jonathan to any bass player at any level.

Jonathan is a kind, patient and thoughtful person with an incisive mind. He’s great at breaking complicated things down into smaller pieces and guiding me step by step towards their conclusion. Not to mention he’s funny and an all around great person to spend time with. I feel like he’s really invested in me.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I charge $50/hour and $35/half hour.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I offer a trial lesson for free upfront to make sure that the student and I are a good fit. In our first lesson we talk about the students goals with the instrument their musical taste. From there I craft an individualized lesson plan.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I graduated from the University of Chicago in 2020 with a degree in Music Theory and Composition. I made the Dean's List and was awarded honors for my Composition Thesis. During my time in school, I received several to grants to pursue further education, including a trip to study Samba Music in Brazil. I've played live shows all over the country, and am also an experienced songwriter and recording engineer.
