All work was completed on time and on budget. Very high quality work. Had absolutely no objection when I added on a few additional smaller projects as well. Had him repaint my kitchen, master bath, guest bath, guest bedroom and first floor power room. All work looks simply amazing! Would definitely hire him again in the future! Sourced through Thumbtack. For being my first experience using Thumbtack, I was definitely satisfied with its role in linking homeowners with contractors.

Brian's work is amazing. His quote was 33% lower that any other contractor that I checked with. His work was great & he was on time as promised. He was even able to take time to help me with another project on the spot. I look forward to working with Brian again.

So first of, Andrei Viscribov and his workers and partner are very professional, reliable and fair priced. They fallow on there words and when the job will be done and stick to the price and don't give you any surprise extra expenses. On October 2015 we were in need of a tile specialist installer to install tile in the bathroom and do the back splash in our kitchen over the granite countertops, After renovating our kitchen and bath. We went through different websites and stumbled on Thumbtack, here after many searches we decided to go with Andriy which would be the best decision we have ever made. I called him after couple of emails back and forth. So I told him I would need it done in a week and he said he would need to see the job first to see price and time the job would be Finnished. So after a couple of days we called him back and asked him to the the job. They were on time showing up for the job, they were prepared to start the demo and begin the job, these guys were so clean and neat with removing the dirt and super clean in installing the tile and backsplash it was perfectly aligned. They did an amazing job from the start of the job to the end. This is the second contractors we had worked with that met more of our expectations, the other contractor that did the wood floors in our and gas pipe did a horrible job, the moral to this last sentence that I have learned is, the cabinet Instaler & tile installer were both Russian & Ukrainian who Did an amazing job and met more than what we expected. My advice to anyone who is looking to do bath and kitchen tilling and want a smooth process with no headache and have an amazing outcome Andrei Viscribov and his team are the only right choice for the job. The horrible contractors who did a bad job in our other projects were Mexicans. Now I am Philipino so I am reviewing this as my experience in who we have worked with.

If I could leave more stars I would. We have been working with contractors/laborers for over 2 years now gutting our house and I have never had a more pleasant experience with a company. Both Paul and his wife Kelly are outstanding. Extremely thoughtful, so professional. The team who came to replace all of our plumbing was professional, friendly, and made the entire experience such a pleasant experience. We have more plumbing to do in the future and I will absolutely be working exclusively with PK Plumbing from here on out. Thank you again for such outstanding service.

Ron Kwaak did excellent work: he had a professional estimate and contract, he remained fully in-budget and on-schedule, he communicated very, very well, and was patient with my multiple requests (as an engineer, I like to ask a lot of questions and understand how things work). Ron is expert-level with plumbing, electrical, drywall, carpentry, and likely many other trades and skills. I selected him for the work since he was multi-skilled, hands-on, and could do all the work himself. He also had a team of additional people he brought in when two-person heavy-lifting was needed, and his people were just as pleasant and skilled. While working with me, Ron completed a very complex bathroom installation (which included many small parts and the manufacturer’s elaborate instruction manual). This work required a lot of know-how, skill, and judgment, in order to move around structures, plumbing, electrical, and to install the new fixtures. Ron truly did a top-notch job. Ron also left my home just as clean as it was when he started, and took great care of all areas in my home. I look forward to working with Ron in the future, and certainly recommend him to my friends, family, and work colleagues. I am 100% satisfied and impressed with the quality of his work, and will use him for all my home improvement needs in the future. Ron was a complete pleasure to work with, thanks Ron!

Needed oversize gutters, new flat roof on an addition, metal awning pushed out due to a dent, and fascia nailed down. Mike, the owner, came out for an estimate. Tony is employed by Mike and did an excellent job! He was thorough, persevered in 90 degree weather, cleaned up all around him to my liking. All in all, Quality Home Remodelers were excellent to have for the job we needed done. I will call on them again in the future and I will recommend them to my friends! Thank you, Mike and Tony!!!

We'd had several contractors come out to quote the price to fix our deck that was in need of repair. All the other contractors only wanted to quote a complete tear down and rebuild - it wasn't worth their time to do less. David came out and quoted us exactly what we were looking for. He was out the next day and completed all the repairs/refinishing within a week and at a fraction of the cost of other bidders. The deck looks like new again.

Jim was prompt, courteous and friendly. He is a consummate professional and meticulous with his work. We hired Jim to do some finish carpentry work and baluster installation. He showed great attention to detail and went above and beyond the estimated hours, but still honored his price. I would highly recommend Jim.

Gene Steele is by far the best contractor I have ever hired. I am currently in Dallas, and Gene is proceeding with a major fix of the rotted structural framing beneath my home in Illinois. He keeps me updated daily with phone calls and photos, and promptly responds to my inquiries. He is Honest, fair, highly experienced, cost-conscious and extremely empathetic to homeowners' worries and concerns. I am on my second project with Gene and hope to keep him busy for quite some time.

I have had other contractors/ handymen and NONE have worked out, until now! He is awesome!! The flooring that he did is perfect!! Makes me want to have my other floors redone, that were just done 2 years ago. He painted my entire house, including trim and walls and they look beautiful. He also did quite a few side jobs, changing mailbox and numbers on my house, put up shelves (straight, level perfect), changed old square light in ceiling and hung a tiffany lamp and many more. Also, his prices couldn't be better, was lower than any of the other estimates! Couldn't be happier with all the work he did!!

Stonehenge contractors do terrific work for a very reasonable rate. Rory James & his team perform in a professional manner and their work is 1st class. They did a kitchen/breakfast room remodel for us that first involved the demo (removing all the old tile and cabinets), and then installed new tile, cabinets, dishwasher, some plumbing rework for a multiple sink design and then face brickwork installation behind our industrial kitchen stove. The job turned out better than we imagined and in less time than expected. Rory also installed a temporary kitchen counter-top and small sink so we have a functional kitchen until the granite counter-tops come in a few weeks. At that time Rory will come back to hook up the permanent sinks and install the back-splash tile. We will definitely use Stonehenge again when we remodel the master bathroom and also recommend them to anyone that is doing any type of home remodel/improvement project. John & Bonnie C. Moussa and his crew completely did my basement. Before starting, my basement was completely raw and Moussa worked with me in understanding what work needed to be done how he was going to do it, what the final finishes were going to look like (prior to starting), finished early and was did a tremendous job. I highly recommend Moussa's work. Moussa also gave a fair price, other quotes I received were much higher and doubt they could have done nearly as good of a job. Please contact if you need before / after pictures. All my concerns, big or small, and at any point in the construction process were answered and addressed without hesitation. Nothing to complain about when the job was finished! Task performed (all to code): Framing, drywall, tiled, installed an entire bathroom in the basement (had to install sump pump), concrete, HVAC, gas lines, electrical, lighting, installed a spiral staircase where there was no staircase originally.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.
