I'm a poet and writer and I've had the pleasure of seeing Ben Paterson perform on stage several times. On stage he is the consummate performer. He communicates with the other musicians beautifully, picking up on their riffs and supporting their solos, then launching into his solos with verve and confidence. I've seen him electrify a crowd in Chicago's The Green Mill by his improvisations and deft key-work. The great thing about Ben is his low-key but very instinctual approach to the music. When one hears Ben play, either and old standard or a composition of his own, one feels like he is hearing the song for the first time and that it will never be played that way again. Surprise and discovery are hallmarks of his melodies and chords. It's been said that to learn anything, it's best to learn from a master. Ben is fast approaching that status as a jazz pianist and organist.

I'm glad I was able to hook up with Ben. He's been a big help in improv tips, intros/endings,and playing with a "groove". I'm actually a guitarist who came across Ben from his outstanding recording "Once In My Life" with a favorite of mine , guitarist Peter Bernstein. I knew I wanted to incorporate some of that "feel good" into my own playing.Well, our sessions have been everything I hoped for. In a short time friends and fellow musicians have commented on how my playing has taken a jump. I'm hoping to stick with Ben for the long hall and I'm sure under his tutelage I can make it to the next level. Our lessons are always informative, direct to the point, and most important, fun. Getting to play with someone of Ben's caliber is a real treat. Check out his dynamite playing on his many you tube videos. I can assure you his teaching is every bit as dynamic as his playing which for many "pros" is not always the case. I'm sure if I was a pianist his teaching would help towards piano mastery. But any instrumentalist interested in improv, playing tunes, and swinging would benefit from Ben's insights. I look forward to my next session with Ben and hope for many more to come.
