I hired Dominic to replace the broken/rotted wood that was holding the front door to my old 1930's building and rehang the door. When I posed the job on here Dominic was the first to contact me and was willing to give me a quote and have a contract ready that day! He showed up the give the quote on time and really studied the job that needed to be done and went into extreme detail on what he was going to do for the job, which I really liked. The quote he gave me was very reasonable and much cheaper than any of the other companies' quotes. I was also pleased to be informed that he could have the job done the next day! Now it goes without saying that working on an old building can be extremely tough. He ended up custom making the exact replica of the previous piece out of a 2"x 10" which looks great and was quite impressive. He hung the door and it fits perfectly now, needless to say, I was amazed because getting an old door to fit perfectly back into it's former position is like trying to custom make a puzzle piece. The work was completed on time and I was quite satisfied, not to mention Dominic was just a really nice and down to earth guy. I will definitely hire this company again for my carpentry, plastering, and painting needs. 100% recommended!

Did a great job, followed up within minutes of me posting the job and did job immediately. He additionally cleaned the gutters on a second property for me in the same neighborhood and also fixed some siding that had blown off the side of the garage while he was there. Was so pleased with his services I am considering using him for a painting job that I need help with.

My husband and I have only met Rick once for the estimate on installing our sliding patio door and we were blown away by his professionalism and value to his company. That's right, Rick is the owner of this company and he was the one who came to our house to give us the estimate. Scheduling the appointment was super easy and they worked around our schedule. He laid out all our options and we did not think twice about hiring Outdoor Living Solutions to install our door. We will definitely be adding another review once the project is complete.

Moved into a new house that had only half the yard fenced. Every other quote was more expensive and 6-8 weeks out. Bill came in with one of the more reasonable quotes and was in within a week of committing. Weekend came to do the work: the weather was terrible. He worked through ice and sleet to make sure that we had our fence completed. If you need work done and you want somebody committed to his work, hire Ross Exteriors. You will only be happy.

Had a door replaced. The door was to the garage. Brian was very professional, very friendly. The job was a little more involved than just replacing the door. He came up with a game plan and it looks great. Will definitely hire him again for future projects.

Rollie and his crew did an outstanding job with building my garage. They were professional, punctual and took care in making sure everything was perfect. They even worked on Sundays which was a surprise to me. Not many contractors would do that to get the job done. There some delays due to the weather but as soon as it cleared up, they were back on the job working. I would not hesitate to recommend to friends and family or to call on him for any other job that I need done. Excellent work!

Cory showed up very punctual. I had him paint 2 very large garage doors. He completed this work in a timely manner, on a very hot day. The amount he charged was very competitive against other bids i got. The quality of work he gave did makes me want to hire him for whatever project I might have in the future. We talked and it turns out he is a jack-of-all-trades. I will hire him again. Thanks again.

Cast Contracting added an all season room to the back of our home. They did exactly what we asked of them and offered additional ideas that we did not think of allowing us to make the final decision. We love the room and have gotten many compliments on it. We used Cast Contracting again for an Insurance hail claim which included Roofing, Guttering, Awnings and putting together a new out building. All done to our satisfaction!!

I had an old and damaged garage which needed to be replaced. Brian was with me from beginning to end. He drew up plans and explained everything from options to cost. My new 1 car garage is bigger, stronger and will last many years to come. Great job on the building, cleanup and keeping in contact with me making this project much easier to handle.

The experience that transpired was excellent. Dave and his crew showed up on time and immediately started renovating the exterior of the house while part of the work crew started to remodel the lavatory. I felt that all that was happening was in a professional and punctual manner, all the while while the exterior and interior was being remodeled Dave stood by me and explained all the varied steps of the different processes. The work quality was excellent and done ahead of schedule and I will with other projects needed to be done have Dave do the remodeling. I do not have the tools nor the skills that Dave and Remodeling Solutions Inc. has. Dave knows his business in all facets of construction. Craig B.

There was a ton of work to be done for a hail damage insurance claim that affected 30+ homes. All new roofs, with a lot of siding, gutter, fascia repairs. Even garage door and garage door trim repairs were needed. Everything looks great and there were even things that were exposed as not being related to hail damage that they either repaired at no additional charge, or worked with the home owners and association to get those issues fixed instead of just covering them up again. Residents in the subdivision have even hired them for additional remodels and additions based on the work they did on the hail claim. We have also hired them to repair the pool house, which also had hail damage. Much better than working with one of the big name roofing companies

Dan Spiegel is Fantastic. We had his company do a stamped and stained patio for us and it turned out exactly the way we wanted it. We liked their work soo much that we later hired them to build our new garage which also worked out great. We have used them again for a couple other concrete jobs, but most important is that we not have a contractor we can trust and will never use anyone else.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
