Jennifer knew what was wrong with our bedroom door right away and had a low cost plan to make the repair with the option to get more expensive if the low cost fix didn't work. Her first plan worked great and now our door doesn't squeak and it opens and closes smoothly.

Adam was very responsive, informative, honest and professional. I hired him to change out 3 locks, handle and deadbolt to higher security hardware and change out a door closer at a commercial location. Everything went perfectly. He adjusted our existing closer instead of replacing it saving us some money. In addition, I hired him to come change out 2 door handles and a deadbolt at my house. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Adam and Windy City to anyone that I knew for thier locksmith needs and look forward to using him in the future.

Our tenants reported a problem with the door frame and patio door lock. We live out of town so finding Ron was a real life-saver. He was able to quickly take a look, provide an estimate and get it fixed for less than his estimate in a matter of a few days. This kind of service is rare and I hope to work with him again. Thank you thank you!

I wish I could give more than 5 Stars. Jim did a wonderful job. He installed a storm door and screen door on our townhouse. He was so wonderful to actually pick up the doors for us because I had no way to get them home. He looked at every detail and adjusted what was needed to make sure the doors fit correctly and looked perfect. Jim didn't rush through the job and cleaned up everything when he was done. We would definitely recommend Jim at Star Lock and Safe.

Jason was great! He came out to look at the job and then went to get the supplies. We wanted to redo our weather stripping on all of our windows & door. When he came back out, he informed me that he couldn't find the window stripping unless we tried to guess and special ordered it but that could be a costly guessing game. He did do my back door and then also patched a hold in my wall from a light install which he wasn't planning on doing. He did a great job with the repair, you couldn't even tell that a hole use to be there :) Thanks Jason!!

Everything was great, safe and reliable service. They put together several furniture items from IKEA, beds, wall shelves, dresser. Service was so great, I even called for a 2nd time when I needed an urgent repair of a cabinet door. Ricky arrived the same day of call and repaired problem in just a few minutes.

I hired Kosterna Construction to do various drywall projects, including building the framing and insulating the walls. They also put in support beams where needed, built a sub floor for tile in the kitchen, installed an exterior door with frame, built frames/molding around windows, evened out a sloping floor/ ceiling. I was able to buy my own materials and paid them for the labor. They are very experienced in all new construction and remodeling. Very nice, reliable, easy to work with. I thought they did great work for a fair price and plan on hiring them for future projects! attached are some photos

I requested someone to fix my sliding glass door and had a response within 10 minutes, he arrived to repair within an hour and fixed within 30 minutes. Was very flexible on options for payment since as a business cash was not an option for me.

Lyndell was great! He was on time and responsive. He was able to easily replace garbage disposal and install new door knob. Very knowledgeable and friendly. Would hire again for anything he says he can do. Also, turned down project a different that I offered because he said he wouldn't be the best for that. This is great because you know he isn't bidding projects he can't perform - if he says he can do it, then you know he can.

Ed was prompt and professional. He was also reasonably priced for the job. I needed my Garage door hinged fixed and the panel pushed back. The hinge was fixed but unfortunately, the panel still causes friction against the frames which seems it may needs to be replaced.

They came and fixed my door so that it will close. There was time left in the hour so they also fixed a shelf that had ripped out of the drywall in my closet. I will definitely call them again. They were very nice and professional.

I had several projects that they were able to help out with. First, I wanted a electronic keypad on my back door, which I really love. Second, I was looking into replacing my intercom system, which they actually just repaired, saving me a ton. I would definitely hire again.

Glenn and his assistant were on time and went right to work. He understood the problem of my 50 year old bi-fold door that was off both the top and bottom tracks. He secured the tracks and rehung the door . This was not an easy job.I was impressed with his ability and would certainly use him again.

Earl Teggatz completed an extensive list of tasks at my condo that I'm preparing for market. This included replacing handles and locks on nine double-hung windows; making doorknobs functional; repairing/replacing three light fixtures; painting an exterior door; making casement windows more functional; repairing kitchen cupboards; repairing a transom. He also spotted some work that I had forgotten to put on the list and took care of that, as well. I liked that he repaired a light fixture that I had been told by someone else had to be replaced. Earl completed the work in a very timely fashion, communicated well with me and charged a fair price.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How does a locksmith open a locked door?

Locksmiths use specialized tools and techniques to open your door in the case of lockouts or lost keys. Trained locksmiths can pick your door lock with lock-picking tools such as a rake, a tension wrench, a half diamond or a hook. They may use a technique called bumping, which will work on pin tumbler locks, or as a last resort they may use a drill to remove your existing lock. The national average locksmith price ranges between $70 and $100. A locksmith can also replace your current lock system, re-key your locks if you have lost your keys, repair a broken lock, install a deadlock and more. Locksmiths not only help with front doors, they can help if you are locked out of your car, locked out of your mailbox, locked out of your shed … you name it. There may be an additional charge for emergency after-hours locksmith services. Check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for a car locksmith?

There are several reasons you may need a car locksmith. You may be locked out of your car (either with the keys inside or with no keys at all), you may have lost your car keys and need a new key, or you may want to make a duplicate car key. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Getting locked out of your car can be scary and overwhelming — especially if it’s cold and dark out. Fortunately, professional locksmiths provide round-the-clock assistance to help people in these circumstances.

Car lockouts are one of the main reasons people need a locksmith. Your locksmith’s price can depend on the type of car you have, the time of day (or night) it is, and where you are located. Locksmith pricing may be based on a flat rate, or pricing may be quoted to you after the locksmith determines the circumstances. For example, a flat rate for a car lockout could be $65 for standard vehicles. That price could be higher for after-hours or long-distance service, or service during extreme weather. If you have entirely lost your car keys, a locksmith can make you a new car key, but first they must verify that you are the owner of the car. Locksmiths can even program new car key fobs for you — often at a lower price than a dealership.

How much does it cost to make a new key for a car?

Locksmiths’ prices for making new car keys can vary depending on the make of your car as well as the time of day and location. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100, but duplicating a key may cost as little as $30, while extraction a key stuck in the ignition, cutting a new key and programming the fob can cost much more.

You might need a new car key if you have lost your key, the key broke in the ignition, the key is bent or damaged, or you just want a duplicate in case of emergency. You can request a duplicate of a key you have on hand, or you can have a new key made or cut if you have lost your original car keys. If you need to replace lost keys, you’ll need to first provide proof that you are the owner of the car along with the vehicle identification number (VIN). If you’re just locked out of your car but don’t need a key made, a locksmith may charge $65 to get you back in. Locksmith car key services are often far more affordable than dealership prices for new keys.

How much does it cost to have a deadbolt lock installed?

Installing a new deadbolt lock can improve your home security, especially if you think your current lock system has been compromised or there are unaccounted-for copies of your house keys in circulation. A professional locksmith can install a new deadbolt for you in a matter of hours. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Locksmith prices for installing deadbolts may be higher based on whether the professional provides the lock or you have it on hand, how many components the locking system includes, and how long the installation takes. The cost to purchase a lock yourself from a big-box store can range from approximately $70 to $225 or more, depending on quality and materials. Higher-security locks often take longer and therefore cost more to install.
