I hired him for my deck staining service. His quote wasn't the cheapest. And I hired him. He asked for half the project cost ($750) upfront and balance when complete. He promised to complete the project in 2 weeks, considering there will be a few weather related delays. The actual, he said, was only 2-3 days. Things started to go bad after first day of work when he began to face trouble at his other project site. Deck staining is a very weather dependent project, but he started giving excuses even on good wether days (his colleague has birthday, his other project got delayed, he is a funeral). Granted, not all of these may be excused, but a client has to wonder at what point does the actual work stop. On the whole he finished power wash and then directly started staining. He didn't do any sanding to smooth out rough surfaces, even though he promised he would. After about 20% of staining was done, he started delaying and stopped coming. I waited one full week with mostly good weather for him to respond to my pings, but didn't. In our last conversation, he mentioned having to start a full-time job and having difficulty managing "side jobs". WOW! that's when I first learnt that my project was a side job and not a high priority for him. At this point, I knew, it is a lost cause for me. I will post my entire conversation with him soon. If you need any work done, don't make these mistakes. 1) Don't trust just anybody who has a profile and a few photoes on thumbtack. Thumbtack needs to do better screening before posting "professionals". 2) Write up a contract before starting work. 3) Don't pay 1/2 price upfront. You loose the leverage there right there. 4) Check references.
