Pablo and Dany were a dream. Pablo responded to my inquiry right away, came to my home to measure the spaces upon my first availability, and produced incredible renderings of what we discussed within 24 hours after measuring. The renderings (and the incredible value) really sold me on the project, and allowed me to tweak certain aspects (e.g. the color and height of the shelves, the style of the cabinet door) to my liking before they began the project. Pablo even dropped by with a few stain options to ensure we had the right color to match our fireplace mantel. Within a couple weeks, they had prepared the materials to install our custom built-in bookshelves and the custom cabinet above our fridge. They made sure to accommodate my schedule (we have two small children who needed to be out of the house before the work began), and arrived promptly for installation. Both Pablo and Dany worked meticulously to ensure every aspect of the installation was perfect - which was VERY difficult in our circa 1904 home! The walls and floors are not level, and the stacked-stone fireplace is not a flush surface to build a bookcase alongside. MANY adjustments were made, and their eye for detail really shined. Plus, they were great about keeping everything clean and tidy, and they cleaned up quickly once they were finished! In the end, we have a GORGEOUS set of built-in bookshelves around our fireplace as well as a cabinet above our fridge - and all of it looks like it has been in the house all along! Having these pieces custom made was the best decision we ever made. And it was all very affordable!See more

MASTER CRAFTSMAN Steffon completely remodeled our back deck, and the process, product and results were incredible! We received a great price, and stuck to the materials budget. He even worked around a separate project taking place, to update our AC unit, so that we could build the deck around it, saving a ton of space and making our backyard kid proof. His team was also super professional. BONUS: He is also an electrician by trade and added an outdoor outlet on our deck, which is something we always wanted. We can't imagine working with anyone else on our next home projects, big and small. He definitely sets the bar high, and we would recommend him and his company to anyone.See more

July 2, 2020 I am writing a letter of recommendation on behalf of Bill Atkins. It is my pleasure to do so. Bill was the general contractor for a remodeling project in my home. The job consisted of replacing carpeting, floors, countertops, sinks and shower fixtures. While major remodeling is inherently stressful for almost any homeowner, Bill’s services were invaluable, and I am extremely pleased with the final result. Specifically, I would give Bill top marks in the following areas: Quality of work performed. The quality of work done was consistently top notch. Bill was knowledgeable, skilled, and competent. He was conscientious about following project specifications, and his work product rarely needed improvement or revision. Bill has an old school work ethic (often 10-hour days, some Saturdays), good work habits, strong safety orientation, and emphasized getting the job done right rather than doing it fast. His pride in his work was evident. He tidied up at the end of each workday. I also found him to be trustworthy, and I felt comfortable with allowing him access inside our home. Effective communication. Bill kept me closely informed of schedules, delivery dates, and projected completion dates of different phases of my project. His communication (whether by cell phone or email) was always clear, informative, and helpful. He was either available on his cell phone, or returned my phone call within 2-3 hours. We never had a single miscommunication throughout the whole project. In his proposal, Bill gave a clear breakdown of costs for each facet of the project. His contract was just as detailed in describing the work to be done and the itemized costs. Same with the change orders. When the project was completed, all the work was done as described and agreed upon, and there were no hidden costs, extra expenses or unpleasant surprises. As a homeowner and customer, I felt Bill delivered exactly what he had promised, at the agreed upon price. Value. I had solicited three bids for my remodeling project. Although Bill’s bid was not the lowest, I am absolutely convinced that he delivered the best value (in terms of the work done) for the price. I am totally satisfied and would contact him in any future projects I need done.See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
