Pablo and Dany were a dream. Pablo responded to my inquiry right away, came to my home to measure the spaces upon my first availability, and produced incredible renderings of what we discussed within 24 hours after measuring. The renderings (and the incredible value) really sold me on the project, and allowed me to tweak certain aspects (e.g. the color and height of the shelves, the style of the cabinet door) to my liking before they began the project. Pablo even dropped by with a few stain options to ensure we had the right color to match our fireplace mantel. Within a couple weeks, they had prepared the materials to install our custom built-in bookshelves and the custom cabinet above our fridge. They made sure to accommodate my schedule (we have two small children who needed to be out of the house before the work began), and arrived promptly for installation. Both Pablo and Dany worked meticulously to ensure every aspect of the installation was perfect - which was VERY difficult in our circa 1904 home! The walls and floors are not level, and the stacked-stone fireplace is not a flush surface to build a bookcase alongside. MANY adjustments were made, and their eye for detail really shined. Plus, they were great about keeping everything clean and tidy, and they cleaned up quickly once they were finished! In the end, we have a GORGEOUS set of built-in bookshelves around our fireplace as well as a cabinet above our fridge - and all of it looks like it has been in the house all along! Having these pieces custom made was the best decision we ever made. And it was all very affordable!See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you and so you can pay the best price.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it hard to build a deck yourself?

If you don’t have the skills, experience and qualifications, building a deck may be difficult for you to do on your own.

Structural integrity is key when constructing anything, but especially something you plan to have your family and friends use regularly. The safety of the structure takes careful planning and experience.

Professional contractors have the knowledge to make a safe, beautiful deck for you. They also know the proper permits and insurance required to legally build a new deck or remodel a porch in your city.

When in doubt, contact the best deck contractors near you and start getting free estimates today.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

“Pepe” was great to work with. He was reliable about keeping the appointments he set, and got our project done quickly and neatly. We were very pleased with the quality of his work—he replicated a detailed banister for our porch steps that perfectly matched the original.
