Wendie was an excellent tutor. Easy to schedule with and found a time and convenient location close to home. My son's score went up several points from the first time he took the ACT (before tutoring). His Reading score had a big increase send his math score went up dramatically too. My son mentioned that the tutoring also helped him in his math class at school. I would definitely hire Wendi again.

I met with Steve for 5 sessions to help me get my GRE math score on track. I had taken a Kaplan course before I took the GRE for the first time, but I scored abysmally in Quantitative Reasoning-- so low that I doubt my Kaplan work had any effect upon my score. Private tutoring was my last ditch effort to improve. Steve directed me to official GRE study materials (which were much more true to test than Kaplan's) and helped me recognize question patterns and develop a testing methodology. After ten hours working together I scored a whole 14 points higher in Quantitative Reasoning, which translated to a raise of 25 percentile points! What especially impressed me about Steve's work as a tutor was his flexibility and availability. I had only three weeks between our first tutoring session and my second attempt at the GRE, and Steve accommodated my schedule beautifully: he even was willing to meet near my house. He also kept me engaged and accountable through text and email, always underlining that I could call or email him for math help in a pinch. Thanks to Steve's direction and study aids, I have more than surpassed the Quantitative score goals I had when I signed up for tutoring. Steve definitely gives you a plan (and it doesn't hurt that he's a nice guy!). I would definitely recommend him to any test taker looking to improve.

I got to know of Chhavi Porwal through a friend, who had been very happy with her experience with her. I hired Chhavi to teach English as a second language to a cousin. Since she is bilingual certified, she was able to relate very well to the student, and within just 6 weeks of tutoring, his English fluency, grammar and pronunciation improved remarkably as did his confidence. Chhavi is a very dependable, experienced ESL tutor. I highly recommend her to anyone who wants to learn/ improve their English.

I was so impressed with Kevin and couldn't be happier that he reached out on thumb tack. I was in search of a tutor to help me pass the Elementary Education Math Content Test (very similar to the ACT math). Not only was Kevin able to teach in student friendly terms, he was SO knowledgeable of the types of questions and concepts I would need to know. Kevin was always very punctual and approachable when ever I did not understand something. We were able to meet before tutoring began to create a plan that we would follow together. By the last session, we covered every topic in the amount of time I hoped for. If you're in need of any math tutoring, I would HIGHLY recommend Kevin. Hands down the absolute best tutor I have ever been in contact with!!

Club Z specializes in finding you the best tutor for you. Last yr my Daughter Emily need an Algebra 2 tutor it was clear she wouldn't excel Without one. Club Z found us the perfect tutor. They got along well and for the first time she really understand Algebra. Not all tutors are the same we had one the previous year (not through Club Z) and no help what so ever. John is like a family member to our family and has been tutoring my girls for about 6 years or so on subject courses as well as ACT prep sessions.. He started tutoring my oldest when she was in high school. Thanks to John's expertise teaching skills with his ACT prep tutoring sessions, my daughter's ACT test score jumped to 8 points from her pre-test score. My youngest daughter is now taking ACT prep sessions with John and gains more and more confidence after each session with John.. John possesses a positive and enthusiastic personality. He has a great rapport with my daughters and is articulate. John is always prepared for every tutoring session and is ready to teach with a smile. John is confident, knowledgeable and reliable. John has successfully demonstrated his awareness of different learning styles and has adequately adjusted assignments to meet my daughters' varied needs. Net, I highly recommend John without reservation!

My daughter has been working with Linda for help in her Advanced Algebra/Trig class. Linda has a very kind tone and a lot of patience. Linda asks for the topics in advance of our sessions so she can come prepared. She doesn't pretend to know everything and will admit if she doesn't know something rather than pretend she does. She also will follow up after our sessions with things if they couldn't figure out a particular problem during the session.

Well, MR "T" (as I called him) was a great tutor. I believe I was sixteen when my mom hired him to tutor me in reading and writing. He was very good, and, funny. I'm twenty now and a student at the U of C, and I still remember and use many of the things he taught me. Anyone would be lucky to have him as a tutor-especially in writing.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

  • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
  • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
  • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
  • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
