Beth was great with my puppy Rosie!! It was my dogs first grooming ever and she does have some anxiety but Beth was perfect with her! She was also very knowledgeable about dog breeds, training tips, etc. which was great since I'm a first time dog owner. Rosie already can't wait for her next grooming! :)

Great dog training service! Adopted a young golden and he had some behavioral and serious obedience issues I wasn't prepared for or new how to deal with. A dog trainer at my work spent numerous sessions with my dog and was unable to deal with or correct any of the major concerns. I found my personal dog trainer in Lombard and the results were remarkable. Another plus is I also received lots of extra tips and advice after the sessions were complete. I have already recommended their service to two other neighbors. Mike R. Bloomingdale, IL

I met with Lisa last night at the dog training facility. We had spoken earlier that day for almost an hour about what I wanted to accomplish with my dog. I decided to bring him out so they could meet on neutral grounds and she could get an idea of who he is. She was excellent in all the information she was providing during our meeting. She took time to listen to my concerns and help me adjust some things which will hopefully make training easier for all of us. I was impressed with her knowledge of training and her patience !! We are going to start meeting at the facility for her class and then for one-on-one visits with the dog. Thank you Lisa!! I feel better knowing that he isn't as bad as I thought and that Titan's issues can be resolved.

First off, Christy is amazing! She is very professional and cares about dogs deeply. I contacted Christy because I have a 46 pound Pitbull named Layla who is very reactive/aggressive towards other dogs and was seeking training/behavior classes. What Christy found was and reassured me of, was that Layla was not aggressive at all and that as a dog, she did not want to be. Rather, Christy said that she was very insecure of herself and I found that to be very true!! During session 2, Christy brought along her dog Mazzei and after only 3 sessions, Layla was able to co-exist with her PEACEFULLY!! It is truly amazing and I would have never been able to imagine that Layla would be able to be around another dog. Added bonus: Christy massages Layla when she is in distress which teaches her to calm down and it has been a huge help! Christy gives my boyfriend and I expert direction on how to properly train Layla as well as weekly "homework" assignments. Although we are still continuing training with Christy and onto our fourth week, we have found her to be a huge help and couldn't imagine the way Layla is now without her. I HIGHLY recommend Christy for training, behavior modification, and canine massage for your furbabies. You will not regret it!! If I could, I would rate her 10 stars! Do yourself a favor and hire Christy...like NOW! :)

Belinda provided excellent care for our dog. Our dog, being a rescue dog, required specialized care in which she delivered; this included having patience, providing lots of attention, and staying overnight. All of which she did all eagerly. Belinda came to our house on a couple different occasions so our dog could become familiar with her. She even brought our Pebbles a new toy and treats! She maintained communication with us while we were away, providing updates and sending pictures. While it was difficult to leave our dog (specially being new to this state) I did find comfort knowing she and our house were being well cared for. Belinda is truly a sweet and caring person to owners and their pets as well as honest and responsible. We will definitely be using her services again:)! Thank you Belinda! We greatly appreciate all you have done for us!

Working with with Pawfect Dog Training was an amazing experience. We adopted a new puppy from the shelter and wanted to crate train her, so she would be comfortable in her crate when we were not home. Matthew did a great job training our dog to go into the crate on her own and feel comfortable in there. More importantly he helped teach us the right way to train her and taught us how to keep up with that training to get positive results. After only a few weeks of working with Pawfect and keeping up with our training at home, our puppy had no problem going in her crate on her own. Now she is so comfortable with her crate that she will go relax in there even when we are home! I definitely recommend anybody to work with Pawfect Dog Training to help train their dogs!

Leslie put me at ease the moment she walked through my front door! She is so easy to talk to about any issues concerning my dog and takes the time and care to personalize training to that dogs needs. Her training method allows for the puppy parent to both see Leslie herself do it and then for me to do it myself, since us humans needs training too! It's very crucial that the puppy parents takes and use her guidance as it will pay off immensely! My puppy, Rhett, was constantly love biting for attention and bothering us during non play time, like dinner. Thanks to her training (me and Rhett that is, lol), he is not nipping and knows when we go to eat, it's not play time. He's also much improved with greetings, has better focus, and is well in his way to be an excellent Canine Citizen! We love, Leslie! 2 paws up! !

Martin is fantastic. He cared about our rescue beagle from the beginning, and made amazing progress on his first visit. It will take time to bring our beagle to where he can be a dog and not a guardian, but if anyone can do it, Martin can. We highly recommend Martin and Black Dog K9 Training and Pet Services LLC.

Adam is AMAZING! We've had other dog trainers, but no one who comes close to comparing to his skill level. More than that, though, he makes it FUN! His lighthearted approach to some trying issues certainly helped ease our tension. What I have found so interesting is how our dog reacted to him the first time. He knew that Adam was in control immediately. I am so glad that a co-worker recommended him after he worked miracles on her dog, too! He is the third dog trainer we've ever used and he will be the last - there's no one better!

I am happy we found Dog Training Now. We had a private lesson with Judy and she helped us right away with Bella on the leash. We signed up for a Stay and Learn Program. I feel comfortable know Bella will be staying in a trainer's home instead of a kennel.

Rich was very professional and an amazing dog trainer. My dog is a loose canon and can be difficult to work with but Rich was very patient with her and with me and broke things down step by step for me. I noticed my dog responding almost immediately to his training methods. I recommend Best in Home Dog Services to anyone who needs a little ( or a lot of) help with their dog whether it be training or dog walking.

Jorge is absolute amazing at what he does. On top of being an excellent dog care professional, he is such a kind and genuine person. After my partner and I found a puppy we were interested in, we ended up having to take her home two weeks earlier than we anticipated. Jorge has helped us in so many way such as basic house/crate/potty training, how to encourage good behaviors, AND has been excellent with last minute walking requests. With Jorge this experience has been a lot less stressful, and both my partner and I feel a tremendous amount of relief when leaving for work knowing Jorge will be there to take her out in the afternoon. He always sends text/picture updates after taking our puppy out, and always reassures us that she is doing great in her development. It really is like being able to communicate with your dog's-bestfriend.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
