I'd recommend Greg to any/everyone! I initially hired him to service a treadmill however because of his professionalism, knowledge & quality work, I then had him remove a stove from my kitchen, service my HVAC system & powerwash the exterior siding of my home. He is honest & does quality work for a fair price! Greg truly is the only handyman you'll ever need!

I put out an ad for someone to run a water line for my fridge. Mike responded very quickly and also made me aware he did other jobs as well. He was able to come over that evening, and take a look at my job. He made me aware I did not have the right part I needed and so we rescheduled for the following Monday. He came out and found a few issues with the install due to the age of the house and placement of the water pipes. He was an awesome problem solver and I felt alot of confidence with asking him questions. As a woman, it is important to me to have someone I can call on to handle the jobs I can't or don't want to do, and have it be done professionally and economically. Mike is wonderful and I will be calling on him regularly in the future!

Zach actually sent me an email on super bowl Sunday with an estimate and request for more information. My water heater had gone out and I'd had no water since Thursday....Monday morning Zach and I talked and he arrived promptly at 2 pm to install my new water heater. I was shown the receipts for everything and he charged me exactly what was agreed upon....which was $100 cheaper then the competition! Zach has a large stocked work truck, did not complain about needed to carry heavy things to my basement and hauled away the old water heater so I didn't have to deal with it. I would definitely recommend Zach Rotkin and have already started on a list of repairs I'd like to have him do at a later date.

After having our water heater go out less than a week after we moved into our new home, I called the number that was on the water heater which happened to be Attaboy. Matt came out and quickly discovered what the problem was. By that time I had remembered that we had a whole home warranty, so I gave them a call to find out if we could go ahead and have Attaboy fix the water heater. Matt waited patiently for me to talk to them and find out. After being told that we had to use one of their vendors, Matt just told me that if we ended up being able to pick our own vendor that I could call them back. After dealing with a couple different vendors through the home warranty I got the okay yesterday to use a plumbing service of my choosing. As soon as I got that ok I gave Attaboy a call and requested to speak with Matt. He called me back as soon as he was able to, got the part needed to fix the water heater ordered last night, and was here first thing this morning to get it fixed. On top of everything he had already done to go above and beyond, he also dealt with talking to the warranty company while working to make sure we get reimbursed. I can't express enough thanks to Matt and Attaboy!

My water heater finally died after 18 years. I called FlowPro and Ron came out later that morning to provide an estimate to replace it. After discussing several options, I decided to go with a tankless water heater in place of a traditional gas water heater. The technician was able to come out that afternoon to replace it and I was able to take a hot shower that night! Very impressed with their prompt service and everyone was professional, from the office gal to the technician. I highly recommend them!

I called Carrico Climate Control this evening way after normal business hours, I was connected to voicemail and approximately 5 minutes later Chris gave me a call to inquire about the problem I was having. He went thru a few steps over the phone to perhaps get my heat on before he came to my home. Mind you I live in Whiteland, IN, and at the time of our conversation he was on a project all the way in Atlanta, IN which is over an hour drive to me. After attempting to resolve my problem over the phone, and after letting him know my newborn granddaughter was here, he agreed to come out tonight. In my experience with countless service companies I have never witnessed the compassion and concern Chris had for me and my family. I asked him what the trip and diagnostic charge would be, and to my suprise suprise was only $75. So Chris showed up, spent may be 20min diagnosing my problem to find out my furnace had been tripping a safety device he referred to as a "high limit". This switch monitors the heat of the internal heat exchanger. He used a neat tool that will extend thru the heat exchanger looking for any cracks or leaks that would cause this limit to trip. Unfortunately he found a crack in our 20yr old exchanger. He had to condem our furnace and disabled it so it would not release carbon monoxide into the air stream .,I which is highly dangerous and possible could have kept my family from waking up the next morning. If course he did not have access to furnace tonight. However what he did next was completely unheard of, he took a trip and picked us up a few safe electric heaters he let us borrow to get us thru the night until he could come back and replace our furnace, he provided us with a quote to replace the furnace only, and he also advised since the entire system was over 20yrs old, it may be a good idea to replace the air conditioner and components at the same time. He also made us aware that right now he is running a promotion where when you buy an at conditioner I could receive a free furnace, so if course we took advantage of that offer. Chris provided a quote which we promptly accepted. If you want to be treated well, and not taken to the cleaners by these other bigger companies, Carrico Climate Control is the place to go!! Chris makes you feel as part of the family. When considering having any hvac, water heater, light plumbing, and electrcal work perfomed Chris at Carrico Climate Control should be your first call. My total bill after hours including the use of the electric heaters was $175.00, in which Chris will deduct from our replacement cost. 5 star company for sure! Thanks again Chris

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

    • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
    • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
    • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
    • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
    • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.

How much does it cost to install a tankless hot water heater?

Tankless water heaters usually cost more to install than traditional tanks, because many homes need to be retrofitted to accommodate the new system. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $150 and $1,200, and tankless natural gas water heaters retail between $200 and $1,300 on average. The lower prices ($150-$250) are generally for point-of-use tankless heaters that can be installed to boost hot water in high-demand areas such as the bathroom or kitchen sink. Tankless water heaters designed to heat whole homes usually start under $300 at the low end and go up to $1,400 or more. Pricing for whole-home varies with the heater’s technology and features. Nationally, standard water heater installation costs average $360-$780, but tankless water heater installation costs may range from $400 to $1,000, depending on the work needed. Some perks of tankless water heaters are that they have nearly double the life expectancy of traditional water heaters and are generally more cost-efficient. Homeowners may be able to save $100 or more per year on their utility bills with an Energy Star approved tankless heater, depending on how much hot water they use.
