Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

I truly admire the hard work and dedication that the Integrity team showed during our move. Due to a change in schedule in closing dates we had to shorten a 2 day move (pack one day - move the next) into 1 day. The team was up to the challenge and worked thru the night to get us out of the house on time as required by the new owners thru pure grit, hard work and commitment to professionalism. I could not have asked for harder working team to help our family move and I would definitely recommend Integrity moving services to anyone who asks!

This company did an excellent job moving a heavy cement bird bath for my family and even located it to the new spot at the new home. They were incredibly responsive, reasonably priced, and when they realized that they didn’t have the right things to move such an awkward and heavy object they quickly brought an extra person and a dolly to be able to safely and effectively move the bird bath. Would absolutely use them again!

Pros and cons, I called them about 3pm and they got the job done same day which I was impressed with. They sent 2 guys when they desperately needed 3 to move the item. The movers did their absolute best job though with what they had, which I appreciated. Good job to Jon and DJ. I had some minor damage to my walls and moderate damage to a doorway but I don't blame that on the movers seeing as they were a man short. I was also told that this company knew how to move pianos but I know they are not based on my experience. I would give the company 3 stars and the movers 5 stars for respecting my home, willingness to work late and get the job done even though they did not have the tools.

The responsiveness was good. Each of my request was answered swiftly. However, the movers came without their paraphernalia. They dropped some stuff while carrying the goods.

Maybe my expectations were too high, but I felt like hiring movers meant making it easy on me since I was spending tons of money. But, I moved most of the boxes myself into the house from the garage. And, unfortunately, they really cut into our walls where the actual drywall chunks and shavings are on the carpet below. They said they would have a drywall person come out to fix it but they did not and now are not responding to our texts, calls, or emails. There were only a couple broken things- my sons lamp and some Christmas ornaments. They said they would replace those too, but again aren’t returning our calls now anymore. This was just not up to par. I had to pay for 3 guys but 1 guy said he couldn’t lift anything because he had hurt his shoulder. And like I said, I ended up moving right along with them the whole time!!! Like I was an employee! Lol

I was contacted almost immediately by Kevin. Kevin came out to give me a quote and was extremely friendly and professional. I knew immediately he was someone I could trust. On the day of the move his employees were actually 5 minutes early and they were all very friendly & precessions as well. They worked hard and actually completed my job in half of the estimated time! I will be recommending this company to everyone! Thanks so much for a smooth transition!

This company is by far one of the best I have ever used. I had injured my back so I needed help. Not only was Kevin the first to respond he worked with me to ensure everything was scheduled and set up. The guys who came took care with my belongings and I am pleased not to have to have damage as I have experienced with other movers. I would highly recommend them and will use them again without hesitation. They deserve 10 stars and anyone hiring them will not be disappointed

Was relying on this company to help moving only a few items before an open house for a property we have for sale. Company changed the scheduled time the night before but thought we could still get it done in time. Multiple text messages confirming time and place. Less than 30 minutes before they were scheduled to arrive they called and said they couldn’t be here until 30 minutes before realtor’s open house. Horrible experience and if I could give them a negative number I would. I definitely do not recommend this company!

Worst movers I've ever had. Started off that they were running late because one of the movers had been in a wreck, then called to give an eta and were still an hour later after the time they gave and then showed up with only two guys when I was told and quoted for three, moved at snail speed taking a break after each time they went to the truck to cool off(knowing I had a lot of stairs and it was hot), complained that they were sore and wore out for the whole 7 hours it took them, almost five hours alone being them loading a two bedroom apartment that should of took no more than 2.5, and I had everything organized and sorted for them to grab and go I was even pulling everything out of the rooms so they didn't have to go any further then my living room, didn't unload my boxes and bags into the rooms they were going in just filled my garage and when I'd ask them to take a piece of furniture to the room it went to they literally huffed and mumbled on, I was charged more then I was quoted even though it was one guy short, they didn't even get all my stuff, they dragged ass and took thier sweet time while letting me know everytime they came to get more to load that they were tired sore and hot and were very huffy during unloading , and didn't even unload to the rooms they go, and then at payment the machine kept declining my card that worked just fine that whole day and even after. I hired professionals for a reason and I did not get professionals. I understand it was hot and there were stairs but this is your job if you can't do it then you need to get out of the business because your costing good people valuable money and time and in my situation I'm still over paying for a job I did half myself. If I could I would give a negative.
