I use Mobile Paws grooming regularly for my 2 cats. One of them is so sweet when she's not being groomed ☺️ However, she was tagged by other groomers as having aggression issues. I do not allow sedation for grooming so I couldn't find a groomer that would service her. Finally I found Michelle and Mobile Paws!! She does an amazing job grooming both of my cats and the convenience of not having to travel to have them groomed works perfect for my schedule and makes the cats less anxious. Her lion cuts are perfect!!! She also gives eat kitty a "report card" (so you're aware of their behavior during grooming) and a goody bag!! Michelle has also groomed my mother's dog and she enjoyed her services as well. I've been using this service since I moved to Crete 2 years ago and will continue to.

Denise and crew have been walking my dogs for over fifteen years now. I would never want to have anyone else. Whenever I have had something unforeseen come up, Four Paws has ALWAYS stepped up and helped me. They care about my dogs as if they were their own. Years ago when I first realized I needed dog walking services, I had an unfortunate experience with another company (they simply 'forgot to come'!) so it took some time for me to trust that Four Paws would not 'forget' us. I feel fortunate to have found them, and I am not kidding when I say I don't know what I would do without them.

I hired Cristiana to look after my dog, Pierre, while we went out of town for the weekend. The proof to us of Cristiana's great care was the excellent mood our dog was in when we returned. When we have taken him to be boarded, he at best grumpy upon our return and at worst sullen. When we returned home after the weekend Cristiana took care of him, he was our happy and ready to play. While out of town, we were happy to know that our home and pet were in trustworthy hands. We would happily use Cristiana's services again, and I know Pierre would be happy to see her!

Entrusting Mr. Barkypants, my first-born son, to a dog walker is akin to how I imagine it might feel to someday entrust a less furry child of mine to a nanny: He/She sure as hell better be committed, conscientious, able to survive blizzards*, and love Mr. Barkypants as his/her own. Using this (perhaps slightly unreasonable) standard, I interviewed many, many dog walkers before I found Walks With Zara Chicago Dog Wlalkers, a dog walking company that Russell and his business partner own and operate. Though I haven't yet had to put them to the blizzard test*, it is clear that Russell is an excellent dog walker and human being. I feel strongly about not having just any random person walk Mr. Barkypants: I've witnessed how some walkers who work at larger operations treat (or rather mistreat) the 5-10 dogs they walk at once. Sadly, it doesn't seem uncommon for some dog walkers, on the north-side at least, to roughly yank leashes or yell and scream at dogs, or to refuse to stop walking to allow one of their charges to use the little dog's room, or to tie dogs up to a post in the park while the walker enjoys a cigarette and long chat with his friends. I am confident that Russell does NOT do this; Mr. Barkypants would probably behave very differently with him than he does. Interestingly, though Mr. Barkypants isn't terribly fond of strangers and he is particularly non-fond of strangers who are male and who wear hats, he took to the hat-wearing Russell like he took to liver treats from the first or second walk on. Russell has a gentle, quiet, calm, non-domineering manner with dogs (and humans, really). He isn't embarrassed about speaking to dogs in goofy voices -- a talent I quite appreciate. Moreover, wrt his human dealings, too, Russell is prompt and as honest as Abe: He lets us know when he isn't able to walk a full hour (because of severe weather or sickness) and deducts from his pay despite our asking him to take the full amount. Rates, by the way, are extremely reasonable for Chicago dog walking, especially since Mr. Barkypants gets Russell all to himself on walks. According to their website, Russell is bonded and insured as a dog walker and is a member of the Association of pet sitters. I can speak with knowledge about Russell's excellent credentials as a dog walker. He *will* treat your dogs with respect and patience -- or at least I'm pretty sure they will based on how they've treated my first born son. I can't recommend him enough.

As far as the service itself goes, SIT in Chicago is great! Our dog Joey loves Gina and we love the text updates telling us about her walk and the photo of her as well! when Joey was a puppy and had a couple of accidents in her crate Gina cleaned it up for her and texted us to let us know. We've also had Gina stay overnight with Joey while we were out of town and everything was great. The only feedback I would offer which isn't necessarily a negative but can make scheduling tricky for our changing schedule when I work from home is that walks have to be canceled within 24 hours.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

    What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

    What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

    • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
    • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
    • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
    • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
    • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
    • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.

How much does it cost to groom a dog?

Dog grooming costs depend on the service your pet requires. Nationally, the average price for dog grooming ranges from $40 to $100, varying by location. Not surprisingly, dog grooming on New York’s Upper East Side costs nearly double what it costs in a small town in Montana. Dog groomers typically handle every aspect of your dog’s beauty and hygiene, from tooth brushing to hairstyling. One potential way to save is to have your dog groomed at your doggy daycare — sometimes they offer discounts on dog grooming prices for clients. Here are some examples of average dog grooming costs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Please note these prices would include transportation fees for picking up and dropping off your dog to your home:

    • Nails: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
    • Toothbrushing: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
    • Tooth scraping (removal of plaque from teeth to prevent infection), with anesthesia: $600
    • Tooth scraping, without anesthesia: $400.
    • Wash and dry: $60
    • Ears: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
    • Grooming package: $130 — includes wash, nails, teeth, ears, gland expression and haircut
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
