Gary came over to remove a very heavy stain on our back deck. We had tried a few products, power washing, and elbow grease ourselves and nothing was getting this stuff off quickly. Gary assessed the situation and provided two different ways to tackle the job. He was was honest with what could and couldn't be done to the deck. They had to come back a few different days because of rain, and easily accommodated. The deck looks amazing! He did a great job and delivered exactly what he said he was going to. Great communication, and great work!!

I can't give this company 5 stars because I requested my house to be power washed. Brandon did a great job but he did not power wash the soffits or eavestroughs. When I mentioned these areas he said when we did the walk through he thought I only wanted the siding power washed. I told him I didn't know this was `a la cart. I pointed out green areas on some areas of the siding that was my concern but I wanted the whole house power washed. I was told they could come back for an additional charge to do Soffits and eaves but I felt it should have been done from the beginning. I had already paid them $400. The front of my house was never done. I told Brandon if he couldn't do the front porch I understood because we had Christmas decorations but he could have done the siding around the garage. Lesson learned. Brandon should have asked me if I wanted the soffits and eavestroughs cleaned when we did the walk through.

The entire experience was great. Steve and his crew are true professionals. Steve was available to talk to and helpful in solving issues. For example, we could not find a mirror that would work in our master bathroom. After brainstorming with Steve and his crew, they took the old mirror cut it down and made a frame that worked perfectly in the area. They got the project down on time and gave us updates throughout the project. They also did not get irritated when we added some additional items such as mounting TV brackets, switching out all the doors (not just main floor) and installing blinds and curtain rods. We were renovating a condo, so we have very close neighbors. The Home Improvement team was considerate of the neighbors and willing to move trucks etc to work with them. Many of our neighbors commented on how nice they were to work with. We are thrilled with how our project looks and the quality of the work. I would not hesitate to recommend The Home Improvement Group to friends. They would be my first choice in any future projects.

Ashby Construction did an amazing job on our deck replacement! They got started right away, showed up every day, did exactly what they said they would do and finished the job when they said they would. They communicated with us every step of the way. The deck is beautiful and well built, and we are very happy with the results.

Mark and Jeremy came out to give me an estimate on my 14X32 deck. Right away, I felt comfortable with the level of their expertise and understanding of what I wanted. They soon after gave me a price break down of the labor and informed me of the cheapest store the materials were available. Throughout the entire process, they were available for questions! My deck was completed in a timely matter and it is beautiful! The main reason I went with them was not only the overall price was WAY cheaper than 5 other estimates I had gotten, but because they gave me a detailed break down of labor costs per ft of material they were installing and I paid for the materials myself at the store, so there was no chance of padding the price of the materials. They also dug out a stone well that I have been wanting for a long time! So anything you need done, just ask, I'm sure they can do it! Thanks again guys, I will be referring you to anyone and everyone I know that has home improvement projects they need completed!

We have been very pleased with Marc Kenyon and Kenyon Construction. We highly recommend him. We hired Kenyon Construction to add a 20 ft x 32 ft great room to our home. We were so pleased with their work that we also had them: add an upstairs bathroom, add new windows, replace existing windows, and drywall an all weather workshop. We have hired him remodel another bathroom and add a deck. Mark and his crew have been a delight to work with. There were a few hiccups- what job doesn’t have them. Mark went out of his way to make things right. Bob & Kirsten Tjernlund

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

          Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
