Great job installing a new water heater, even though it was a little tougher installation than what was initially planned.

Vince came out the next day when we had a dire need to repair the electricity to our sump pump. He ended up also installing a light above our basement steps, replacing our old lights with new ones, and correcting the wiring in our basement. Great value and a real pro! Thanks

Ken did a great job. He was running late and called to let us know. He spent several hours cleaning the basement. Unfortunately, there is still a smell in the basement, but this is due to having to close up the house without any ventilation. I am purchasing a dehumidifier for this purpose.

Gus showed up 15 minutes early! I've worked with countless contractors and I can tell you it's rare to find one that shows on time and even less being early. Super helpful and knowledgeable about answering any questions I had about water heaters/plumbing questions I had. Definitely will be working together to swap out my 2 other water heaters when they start to fail.

I had a very complex and complicated leak involving my sprinkler system and other water system interactions that ran through the house and out into the yard. John responded to my Thumbtack reply within an hour and agreed to go on-site the same day. In my experience with plumbers in general in the area that is unheard of. My previous interactions with local plumbers in Downers Grove/Darien area was one where they "might" be able to get out there in a few days, and had instances where they just never showed up after they said they would. But not these guys - they were GREAT!!! John called me after hours from the property (I rent the house) and talked me through what his preliminary assessment was. He was ready to proceed the next day but we had some difficulty coordinating the tenant to be there. But John hung in there, directly coordinating over the next few days to arrange for access and to have the water turned off so the work could be done. In the end it turned out to be a very difficult resolution, but John and Do Right Rooter took all the steps necessary to resolve the problem. At the conclusion of the work he spent about 30 minutes on the phone with me explaining the scope of what was done. He volunteered to come back out in the spring before the sprinklers are turned back on to do a more thorough pressure test to ensure there are no other leaks in the systems' interactions. I could not ask for better service and can only recommend the best trades-men service I have had.

Larry called me at 9:30pm at night moments after I submitted my request. He went over all available options in detail. He was extremely informed and knowledgeable. He followed up with me the next morning after confirming prices on new hot water tanks. His price was very competitive. I decided to hire him and I’m glad I did. He arrived on time and after discussing the job in detail he noticed that a few additional items would be needed to properly complete the install and would NOT raise the price! Very upfront and honest contractor. The job was completed to my satisfaction as well as my wife’s. Larry exceeded my expectations and I will be using him again for my next project! You can see the detail and quality of work in the photo I’m uploading. Thanks Larry for making this hassle free! A++++

Mr. Jackson and crew, rescued a DIY project gone wrong. Needed a hot water tank installed, and he was able to do it the same day. He provided the bonus service of picking up the product that I purchased. He kept me informed as to his arrival time so that I was not waiting on him all day. Upon completion he made sure that everything was up to code, and that there were no gas, or carbon monoxide leaks, things I never considered when doing it myself. Will definitely use them for other projects.

We immediately hired them to take care of a routine maintenance job as well. They were great.

After several months of our house being on the market, we decided to call Hooks Service for an estimate on putting a hardwood floor in our family room. After hiring the service, we had them check out our hot water tank as we thought there might be a problem with it. They advised us of the problem and they replaced our hot water tank. After the floor was installed, we had several offers in the next week. After the inspector came through for the buyers, there were a few repairs that needed to be done and of course, we called Hooks Service. They once again did a good job taking care of the electrical and window repairs. I will call them again if anything needs attention in our new home, and I would recommend that you call them too.

Chavez Heating replaced my water heater. They did all the needed upgrades, and best of all for a very reasonable price. Brian & Efrain are honest gentleman. It was a tight squeeze in the area they were working, but they removed my big, old heavy water heater & were very mindful not to destroy surrounding area when taking it out & replacing new water heater. They took their time and did a great job! They left the area clean and hauled away old water heater. Thanks guys! Would recommend to give these fellas a try. You'll be happy you did.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

    • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
    • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
    • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
    • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
    • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

    • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
    • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
    • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
