Ginni B. says, "I hired Jordan to help me with a kitchen drain clog. I really appreciated Jordan’s tips throughout the process. He took apart my pipes under the sink & showed me the gunk inside. When I offered to clean them, he insisted that he do it. Next, he snaked the pipe from the sink to the main water flow pipes. It didn’t quite go through, so he did it a 2nd time. A clog still remained. Jordan explained with the age of the house, there were no traps to snake the pipe that ran from the sink to the main water flow pipes from the basement. That’s where the clog was. For an additional fee, he cut out a portion of the pipe & replaced with another pipe that had a trap so that future snaking could take place from the basement with a straight path to the main flow pipe. Omg! He showed me what had accumulated in the old pipe since the house was built in 1978. It was horrific. People, get your pipe from the garbage disposal to the Main flow pipe cleaned often so this doesn’t happen to you. And call Jordan to do it. Responsive, on time & willing to give you good advice. Bravo to Jordan for saving the day. I will be calling him annually to clean our pipes."See more

“Addressing bathroom sink leaks or drainage issues early can help prevent damage to cabinets or mold growth, and save you from expensive repairs. Slow drainage, persistent dripping, or stains beneath your sink can indicate hidden leaks or clogs that require a plumber.“

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Yes, plumbers are the go-to pros for fixing bathroom sinks. They can tackle common issues like leaky faucets and clogged drains or even replace the entire unit. It's a common part of bathroom fixture repairs, so a qualified plumber will know how to handle it.

Before hiring a pro to fix your bathroom sink, be sure to ask your pro these questions:

  • Are you licensed and insured to perform this work?

  • Can you provide a detailed, written estimate that breaks down the costs for labor and parts?

  • How long do you expect the repair to take?

  • What’s your experience with this specific type of sink or faucet?

  • Do you offer a warranty or guarantee on your work and the parts you install?

  • Will you be supplying all the necessary parts, or do I need to purchase them separately?

  • Does your service include cleaning up the work area afterward?

You can fix small chips and cracks in a porcelain or ceramic sink with a DIY epoxy repair kit. For larger cracks, leaks, or plumbing issues, it's best to hire a pro who handles bathroom fixture repairs to help ensure a lasting fix and prevent water damage. The process usually takes one to two hours, depending on the issue.

Typically, it will take a professional one to three hours to fix a bathroom sink, but the total time depends on several factors. For example:

  • The type of repair needed: Fixing a simple leak is much faster than replacing the entire sink basin.

  • Accessibility: Working in a tight vanity cabinet can add time compared to an easily accessible pedestal sink.

  • The condition of existing pipes: Old or corroded pipes may need to be replaced, which can extend the job.

  • Parts availability: If a specific or custom part is required, your pro may need to order it.

  • Related damage: Repairing any water damage to the surrounding countertop, cabinet, or floor will extend the project timeline.

Remember: The timeline for your project will vary depending on many factors. Always ask your pro to provide an estimate.

Common signs that your bathroom sink needs repairs include:

  • Leaks or drips. You might notice water pooling under the sink, around the faucet handles, or at the base of the drain. Even a small, slow drip can waste a lot of water and cause damage over time.

  • Slow draining. If water takes a long time to drain from the basin, you likely have a clog in the P-trap or further down the drain line.

  • Low water pressure. A sudden drop in water flow from the faucet could mean the aerator is clogged with mineral deposits, but it can also point to issues with the supply lines or valves.

  • Visible damage. Cracks, chips, or rust stains on the sink basin or faucet can worsen and cause leaks, and often require professional attention.

  • Unusual noises or smells. Gurgling sounds from the drain can signal a venting problem, while persistent foul odors often mean there's a buildup of gunk or a sewer gas issue.
