Services: 1) Tax Preparation, 2) advice on a real estate issue. My experience with Suncrest Financial Services was excellent. I was contacted promptly by a accountant/consultant who was courteous and professional. My complicated tax preparation was performed in a very timely manner with great attention to detail. The paperwork was filed on time and the accountant gave me solid advice for preparing for filing 2016 taxes. The accountant researched my real estate question and her advice will save me money in the future. I was very impressed with the accountant and the customer service of the company. I plan to continue to use Suncrest Financial Services for my future accounting needs.See more

I reached out to Money Equations after interviewing numerous local CPAs for my businesses. Many were responsive to the initial request but then failed to follow up, either for no reason or because they were uncomfortable with the potential complexity of the businesses. Lakshmi and her group (Gayetri handled my account) are by far, the most responsive, professional, and punctual group of accountants I've worked with in a professional or personal capacity. They answered every question typically within the hour, and every post-preparation modification was turned around in less than 24 hours. While I engaged Money Equations for my business, they handled the individual return for my wife and I with equal competency and promptness. Finally, the entire process was handled virtually, i.e., online and by phone. At no time did I feel it necessary to meet in person or that quality of service suffered as a result of their virtual approach. The personal and professional aspects of the engagement were perfectly balanced. Just a fantastic experience overall. (And when talking about someone who is doing your taxes that's saying something).See more

Anyone would be lucky to have the opportunity to work with Christian Putnam. His attention to detail, passion for relentless improvement and doing things the right way, is well-balanced by his easy-going attitude. He is pleasant to work with and extremely capable. A colleague of mine at Google introduced me to Christian in September 2017. I was looking for someone to help me with the accounting for Well Constructed (www.wellconstructed.org), a nonprofit I co-founded in 2015 that provides clean water to communities in rural Ghana, West Africa. Since 2015, Well Constructed has completed 100 water projects, providing clean water to over 50,000 people. Well Constructed has a small paid staff in Ghana, but the United States staff members are all volunteers, which allows us to use donor dollars exclusively on our programs. When Christian joined, I was doing the accounting for the organization. My background is in civil engineering, construction management, and data analysis, certainly not accounting. As Well Constructed grew, I became more and more unqualified to manage the finances. Since Christian began volunteering almost three years ago, we’ve met on a weekly basis via video chat, and through these meetings, Christian has transformed our accounting practices and operating structure. The accounting that I sloppily performed via spreadsheets is now in a robust accounting software platform. We also went back and reviewed every previous transaction since the organization’s founding in 2015. Christian took it upon himself to do a comprehensive process audit of our organization, and drove many organizational improvements as a result of the audit, including formalizing the Board of Directors and their Bylaws, instituting a clearly defined expense approval process, and a number of other processes that our scrappy organization lacked. I sleep much better at night now, confident that our books are correct and we have necessary financial controls in place thanks to Christian’s knowledge and diligence. In February 2020, Christian travelled with me to Ghana to meet the Well Constructed team in Ghana and the communities our work serves. His main objective on this trip was to audit the Ghana team’s financial processes, and implement the Expensify App to track their spending. He quickly bonded with Samuel, the Treasurer of the Ghana Team. Samuel eagerly took to Christian’s guidance, and over the course of the trip they made great strides in improving the team’s processes and spreadsheet capabilities. Since returning from Ghana, Christian has spent a great deal of time learning the tax system in Ghana to better understand the finances of the team in Ghana. He’s also set up weekly meetings with Samuel, to continue this training. Christian is unlike any volunteer I’ve worked with at Well Constructed. Most of our volunteers are colleagues of mine at Google who, like Christian, are very talented, but we’ve never had anyone with the combination of talent, humility, diligence, and reliability that Christian brings to Well Constructed. Often a talented volunteer will get quite involved for a few months, but then get busy with work or family, and back out of their prior commitments to Well Constructed. We’ve also had wonderful volunteers who use this as an opportunity for a letter of recommendation for graduate school, and once accepted Well Constructed is no longer a priority. I can always count on Christian to make our weekly meeting, and have done some work to prepare for it. When Christian makes a commitment, I know he will follow through. I can also always count on Christian to do things the right way, no matter how painful it is. There have been times that he wasn’t 100% confident about how we should record a transaction in our accounting software. In some of these cases, the amount of money has been insignificant (< $1), and I’ve encouraged us to make a quick decision for the sake of saving time. In these instances Christian has pushed back on me, sometimes accepting the decision, but coming back a week later after doing more research and suggesting corrective action. His integrity and principled approach can slow things down a little from time to time, but he is willing to do the extra work to produce work that he is proud of, and I am very grateful for it. When Christian started at Well Constructed, we had completed 17 projects in Ghana. In less than 3 years since joining, we’ve grown more than 5x (100). Much of this is indirectly due to Christian’s relentless dedication to improving our financial processes, which has freed up an enormous amount of time I previously spent struggling through it, that is now spent fundraising and managing the team in Ghana. Christian now serves as the Treasurer on the Board of Directors of Well Constructed.See more

The short story is that David discovered and fixed issues from two previous tax preparers and saved me 30K. He is professional, fast, direct, and accurate. I've always been unhappy with my accountants, to the point where I just started doing my own taxes for 7 or 8 years. They were always slow to respond and I always found mistakes in their work, simple mistakes. A couple of years ago I transferred my rental property to LLCs and decided to work with a professional accountant again because I didn't have the time to deal with the complexity of the filings. I found a local guy that did my 2017 return. Later that year I decided to sell one of my properties so I gave him a call to see if there was anything I should consider from a tax perspective. After a 10 minute conversation, he basically said "No", and then sent me a bill for $400. So I had to find another accountant to file my 2018 taxes, this is the year I sold one of my properties too. The new guy looked over 2017 and filed 2018, I did not get much of a refund which never felt right because I had taken a big loss on the property sale. As we're preparing for 2019 I asked him to look over 2018 and tell him my concerns. He says he'll review everything again and then he basically flakes on me, just disappears, I can only reach his receptionist who always tells me that he is busy with business filings because of COVID. I decide to drop him, expand my search nationally (I can't believe I never thought of that before), and ran across David Beck. What a difference! A couple of one line emails and a few hours later David calls me with the news about the refilings and refunds.See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an accountant?

Accountants are financial professionals who have received an accounting degree from a four-year university or college. By trade, accountants prepare, maintain and examine the financial statements of an individual, business or institution. An accountant prepares reports for tax purposes and can also perform audits of public companies. Common tasks include creating budgets, analyzing profits and losses of a company, processing payroll, preparing financial statements for company leadership, and creating and maintaining financial database systems for a company.

Accountants do not automatically have a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation unless they have passed the Uniform CPA Examination and received the proper license. Regardless of whether they are CPA certified or not, accountants can assist businesses and individuals with bookkeeping and financial reporting, while CPAs are more knowledgeable in tax codes as a result of the CPA licensing examination and continuing education requirements. CPAs are also eligible to represent clients before the IRS if audit support is required, while a non-CPA accountant is not. Academic background, years in the field and professional reputation all can affect an accountant’s rates.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tax preparer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to conduct an appointment during the COVID-19 pandemic is virtually, as this will ensure that you remain within the CDC's social distancing guidelines.

Ask tax professional near you if they would be willing to give a consultation via phone call, Zoom, Skype or other video conferencing software to discuss the scope of work. Also, ask them how they handle payments and whether they will be able to conduct all of their services remotely.

How much does it cost to hire an accountant?

Accountants’ rates vary based on their education, licenses, experience, and the work for which they are being hired. An accountant may charge an hourly rate when a company or individual needs their services on a short-term basis, such as when performing an audit or requesting assistance setting up a financial database or process. Hourly rates can range as widely as $40 per hour to $300 or more per hour, depending on your geographic location and the accountant. Check out the average hourly rate for accounting services in your region.

Accountants may offer a package rate for weekly, monthly or annual services to reward ongoing customers. Many accountants offer online services where small businesses can access online accounting software and payroll assistance, and the accountant — for a monthly or other recurring fee — provides financial analysis and reporting of their numbers. For basic monthly accounting services, an accountant might charge anywhere from $75 to $500 or more, depending on what was included in a given package, the size of the client’s business, and the complexity of work requested. Nationally, full-time staff accountants earn between $40,000 and $80,000, depending on experience and other factors.

Does a tax preparer need to enter my home?

It is not typically necessary for a tax preparer to enter your home. Many CPAs and tax professionals operate remotely. Ask the tax professional if they can conduct their services remotely, and see what precautions they have in place during social distancing.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tax preparation services?

Before you hire a tax professional, visit their business profile to see how they handle payments. Many CPAs and tax experts accept digital payments through Venmo, PayPal, Square Cash, Zelle and other online platforms. More businesses may be changing their payment methods to accommodate social distancing. Check with your tax preparer to see how they handle payments.

Who can file my taxes?

Any individual with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN) is eligible to file your income taxes on your behalf. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they will be the best candidate to provide the help you need with your income tax preparation. The IRS explains that CPAs, attorneys and enrolled agents are all allowed to legally represent their clients before the IRS. They have a more thorough understanding of tax code than an individual operating solely with a PTIN or an Annual Filing Season Program participant who provides their services on a volunteer basis. Consider the complexity of your tax return and what level of expertise you’ll require. Before entrusting someone with your private financial and personal information, do some research on their qualifications. The IRS has a searchable database where you can verify the background and credentials of your income tax preparation professional. Once you have selected someone, ask about their service fees and confirm their availability. Then provide them with all the documentation they require, including W-2s, 1099s and more. Always ask to review the paperwork before it is submitted, and never sign a blank tax return.

How much does it cost to get taxes done?

Hiring a professional to help with income tax preparation can be priceless. Pro help can mean no mistakes and a maximized tax return. The cost to get your income taxes done depends on the professional you hire. Tax attorneys or in-demand CPAs will often have the highest rates for their services. Next in the pricing tier are enrolled agents, who will usually have higher rates than individuals solely working with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). Nationally, the average cost of income tax preparation ranges from $150 to $190. Income tax preparation prices can also vary based on where you live and the complexity of your tax returns. Here are some examples of average income tax preparation prices from an enrolled agent:

  • Taxpayers filing only a W-2 tax form: $50.
  • Taxpayers filing a W-2 along with additional tax forms such 1099-INT and 1098-E: $150.
  • Taxpayers with several tax forms and one or two additional considerations such as a rental property, investment transactions, K-1 income, 1099-MISC or a simple small business: $225.
  • Taxpayers with multiple activities (rentals, K-1 income, small business, etc.), several stock transactions and more: $395.

Nationally, the average hourly rate nationally for a tax prep professional ranges between $150 and $450.
