"Thinking back to our days working together in student journalism between classes at Towson University more than 15 years ago I still see a second baseman soaring up in the air after a high throw from his catcher, the ball just beyond his glove and out-stretched arm while a base runner almost loses his helmet with a slide underneath. Will the infielder catch the throw? Will the runner get in?
And then there’s a different image: a tight close up on the face of a Towson swimmer fresh out of the pool, beads of water dotting his nose, cheeks and chin. You can see the determination in his eyes through those yellowish goggles.
Saul Stoogenke captured these images, unforgettable even after all these years. I wrote sports stories, the boring gobbledygook, but his art caught your attention. Even back then, Saul was already winning awards and recognition. And his latest portfolio still reflects that unique style.
You can see how much he loves this craft. The newspaper business trained us to multitask, prioritize and meet strict deadlines on a regular basis. Saul is a true professional. He really listens to people, and he’s patient with those of us who really don’t know a whole lot about photography but have ideas. He’s happy to work with you, and he’s fun to hang out with. We joined the Towson student newspaper about the same time, and almost immediately developed a great friendship still going strong."
