I have used Alvin Smithson's services for over five years as a piano tuner, teacher and performer. I am always impressed with his skills, artistry and professionalism. Alvin first came to tune my 100-years old Steinway after it had been neglected for a number of years. He first examined the instrument, diagnosed what needed to be done and then proceeded with his expert tuning. Immediately after he was done and started playing, I was amazed at how good the piano sounded. Alvin explained that with a piano that hasn't been tuned or played in so many years, it will take some time to achieve its best form and sound for which it was built. A short time after, my wife started taking piano lessons from Alvin and as she started gaining proficiency in playing under his guidance, the piano itself gained a rich pleasing sound. Alvin paid close attention and adjusted notes or did a full tuning whenever needed. He also took the time to clean the strings and do minor technical adjustments. When a string needed to be replaced, Alvin recommended a technician from a highly reputable company. Overall, we owe it to his expertise to have the wonderful old piano do what it was built for by the Steinway masters. I should also mention that I heard some great musicians at venues where Alvin is the regular piano tuner. People who visit our house and hear our piano, or play it themselves, always compliment its sound. But the best comes when Alvin himself sits at the keyboard, whether at our house, at a social function or performing in the theater, it's such a joy to hear him play some great classical pieces as well as his own wonderful compositions. He is truly a very talented, sensitive and highly knowledgeable artist. And such a pleasant person, too. My wife and I feel fortunate to have Alvin give us the best piano sound to enjoy live music in our home. I would recommend him to anyone as piano tuner, teacher and overall musician.

John Kunu is flexible in his approach to teaching, he brings many styles & skills to the keyboard, and he is willing to teach to what the goals of the student are rather than a regimented steps approach. John has been my daughter's piano teacher for several years. We are a musical family so it was important to us to choose a teacher with the depth in classical but also the breadth of knowledge in contemporary pop music, in order to keep our teen engaged in what she was learning. John's flexibility to teach to her interest areas while still making sure she mastered foundational skills and repertoire are rare in a piano teacher. We love that he weaves both classical instruction and improvisation so that a student is comfortable playing a piece of Bach as well as the latest songs on the radio. This has kept the learning fresh and relevant. But the greatest thing of all is when we hear our daughter wander over to the piano and just play -- she sounds beautiful and it is utter joy hearing your child make music and know that she will have this for a lifetime.

We hired Kim's trio for our jazz soiree and they were excellent! Kim let us know a few days prior to the event that he couldn't make it, and gave us the option of canceling or having the trio w/ another pianist playing in his stead. We could have gotten another band altogether (three replied to our request on Thumbtack), but we went w/ his option of the substitute pianist and could not have been happier. The trio was fabulous, attendees from the young to the not so young loved all the tunes, and everyone had the best time. We are definitely putting Kim and his trio or quartet on our slate of events for 2018.

I highly recommend Simon for your wedding, funeral, or other need. I was blessed and honored to have Simon provide the music for a funeral service earlier this year. With Simon's talent as a vocalist, as well as his skills as a composer, pianist, organist, and accompanist, the music was superb. He worked with me closely on the planning, and his suggestions for the service were excellent, including the addition of a soloist with whom Simon had worked. Many people told me afterwards how much the music touched them and uplifted them on a sad occasion, and I was touched and uplifted as well.

Jon was a major contributor to the fantastic event we threw for my luxury apartment community. He was extremely professional, dressed for the part and is quite talented on the piano. I hired Jon for the background music at our event, however his talents shined through as we received countless compliments from our residents, regarding his playing ability. Thank you Jon and I look forward to using you again.

As a beginning adult learner, I greatly appreciate John's patience, encouragement, and musical expertise. John draws during each lesson from his own experiences and education to illustrate musical concepts and impart solid technical knowledge. He sets meaningful expectations for the learner and yet is very gentle in uncovering and correcting student weaknesses. John is a warm, generous, and good-humored teacher, and it has been a delight to be his student. I am very happy with the progress I have made on the classical guitar under John's direction.

I was an adult beginning piano student of Penny's in New Haven for a couple years until I moved, even though her other students were young. At first I was embarrassed because I'd wait a few minutes for my lesson and hear like a 12 year old or so, playing a big Beethoven Sonata or something, and then I'd be in there as an adult playing maybe a few of those level 1 or 2 pieces. But I can't imagine how anyone could stay embarrassed around Penny A.. She's sweet and seems to have a way of helping people feel good about themselves. But she's not the type you'd want to catch you slacking off because she cares so much and is generous so you'd feel very bad about slacking off. She also didn't treat me as a little old lady with limited music abilities. I think she cared as much about me and my progress as she did about that young prodigy I mentioned, for example. I looked forward to my lesson. And the kids before and after my lesson were relaxed and jokey and they seemed to like her as much as I did. But of course I can't speak for them! This thing says I'm supposed to say something went wrong. Probably nothing that wasn't my own fault. Only thing I can think of, maybe she'd always give me and other students a little extra time, so if your lesson is maybe during the second half of her day, you might have to wait 10 minutes, never over 15 minutes, for your lesson. I didn't mind though. Penny A taught very well.. I'm really happy to read music and play so much on my piano that before had been collecting dust. It impresses my family, too!

Julien did a really good job playing for our wedding. Our original musician cancelled on us last minute and Julien was able to pull together a great set for us and even learn a piece that my now-wife really wanted to have played during the reception. He was really friendly but also very professional and knowledgable.

Ron is well versed in music theory, rhythms, chords, scales, and basically all musical concepts for beginners, mid-level, or even professional level piano players. He relates in a "down to earth" manner, that is easy to understand and apply ! Keep up the good work Ron !! I even received personal calls, to help me improve my playing. I was an absolute beginner, when Ron started helping me, and I didn't know what a chord or scale was, and now, for the last 4 years, I have been the "House" pianist, at a luxury hotel, playing for weddings, corporate events, etc.!! (I would play for FREE, but the hotel is paying me to play...I can't believe it !! I am learning everyday, and I thank Ron, for giving me the foundation tools, needed to learn, to play the piano.

Sam is a gift to me sent straight from Heaven! I’ve grown so quickly in such a short time - even though music and singing has been a passion for most of my life… As a kid I harmonized with the congregation to Gospel music in my father's tiny Baptist church in Southern California or "jammed" alone in my room to records my folks bought me (not realizing it was the dawn of Christian Contemporary Music). Later in my childhood I did a few jingles for TV commercials & then sang in choirs as a teen - anything from Handel's Messiah to English Madrigals; in college I moved on to singing in a cappella groups: R&B (Essence) / Praise&Worship (Rejoice). Now 30 years later, I'm still singing when I can (as a part of my church's Worship Department) - but I can't say that I've grown that much vocally since I was a kid in my father's church...well, that all changed when I met Sam. Sam immediately put me at ease when I met him (I'm a bit perfectionistic & was soooo nervous). After just the first meeting, he told me things about my voice even my current choir director doesn't know – whom I’ve served under for a decade! He's a great guy - but, he IS demanding...putting me through the paces necessary to build a good foundation first all the while being very affirming. Actually, the first gift Sam gave me was Confidence. I don't have a fantastic voice but I have a good ear & Sam can hear subtle but important qualities/problems in my voice & call them out for me & then give great tips to correct them - whether it was my tone, breathing, inflection or phrasing. [I've purchased online voice programs (eg, Singing Success) & have understood the issues before but one-on-one instruction with Sam has addressed them more than every CD exercise I've tried.] Because I am a mixture of different musical backgrounds, I LOVE that Sam has the unique ability to fuse Eastern & Western music theory into practical instruction. I’m all about understanding the details behind singing. But, I’ve learned that the best Technician is not the best Teacher or Singer. It also requires something of the Heart. Well – that’s the beauty of Sam’s range: if the song requires soul...he's got it; if a more traditional, classical flavor is needed...no problem! So – for me – the best thing about Sam is his genuine heart for his students and for the true purpose of Music: to release in sound something from the heart that blesses ourselves & others...from the very core TO the very core. This was what I was missing before...the sound that came out of my mouth never seemed to merit what I felt inside. Well, I'm so much closer now to this precious place than I was before (after only 7 weeks)! I still have a LONG way to go. But because of God’s gift to me (Sam), I know I’m on the road to some place very new...

Scott Schoem is a wonderful piano teacher who has worked with my children for four years. He is a talented musician himself who shares his skills and love of music with his students. Scott always is upbeat, patient and encouraging. My children enjoy their lessons with Scott and have learned to play piano well under his tutelage. He varies the songs they learn from classic pieces to jazz, rags and blues to holiday music to keep practice time fresh and fun.

Sadie was absolutely wonderful as the pianist at our cocktail fundraiser party. She was not only professional, arriving 15 minutes before her time to start, but also set the tone for an elegant, classic night, achieving the desired ambiance we had hoped for. She is beautifully versed in her musical repertoire. She has a very nice demeanor and is wonderful with children as well. She has been teaching piano to our daughters for several months. She has a gentle yet enthusiastic way of relating to youngsters. We think Sadie is great and has been a blessing to our family!

Justin performed for my wedding ceremony. He worked with us ahead of time to choose his setlist, and he learned specific songs that we requested for special parts of the ceremony. His performance was musically beautiful. He was on time, well dressed, and he is a friendly person that we enjoyed working with.

One critic described her as "a spell-binding professional who rivets attention with her magnificent, clear and articulate voice". Iva Jean Ambush is a wonderful interpreter of the Great American Song Book. She founded Ambuscade, which is a group of teachers and educators who enjoy the balance of performing and a family life. They have performed at the following: • Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival • International Association of Jazz Educators Conference • In The Streets Festival • Frederick's 4th of July Celebration (3 years) • The East Coast Jazz Festival • The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and more Ms. Ambush and Ambuscade have covered complete weddings, including the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner and dancing portion, and she has been the mistress of ceremony (MC) for religious ceremonies, weddings, fashion shows, etc. This is a testament to her leadership and versatility. They can perform anything from "Crazy" by Willie Nelson, "Come Sunday" by Duke Ellington to "At Last" by Etta James/Beyonce and everything in between, including some original music! The band's size and instrumentation can be modified to fit your entertainment needs, making Iva Jean Ambush and Ambuscade the ideal band for any event. Billy Caldwell Billy was a truly wonderful part of our wedding. He was so easy to work with. From our first conversation, it was clear that this was a talented guy that we were lucky enough to snag before he hits the big time in the wedding circuit. And then as we continued to get to know him, it became apparent that he is too humble of a guy to turn into that. From the set list, to the cost structure, to his understanding of how important communication is in wedding planning, he exceeded all of our expectations. On the day of, he did all the set-up himself, he played what we asked and he had his finger on the pulse of the evening. Other reviewers mentioned that he has played softer, bluesy music, which he also did at ours, but he can also play stuff that really rocks the house. There was rock, blues, country, classic rock, indie, folk, etc. When the party needed some life, he brought it big time, and when it needed a slow-down, he played just the right thing. This is a guy who has the voice and musical knowledge and talent to play larger functions, or to really bond with a smaller crowd. He played stuff that ranged over four decades. We loved him, our guests loved him, truly he was the man.
