I actually had demolition removal of a large garage area since originally it was not put up with a permit. I am located in DC and I had Ed handle the entire process which couldn't have been better. He is very knowledgable on any demolition needs or debris removal. I am thankful that Ed responded to my request because I knew by other profiles of other contractors that they could not handle the job. I own a real estate firm and now I will be hiring Eds crew to do debris removal on a weekly basis because of the exceptional level of professionalism that Ed portrays to his customers. I highly recommend and 100% agree with all the past reviews and will be referring to all my friends and family.

We are so pleased that we found Erick on Thumbtack! Erick and his team remodeled our bathroom and we could not be more happy. It's like we get to come home to a spa bathroom everyday. He and his team are professional and polite. Construction can often be dusty, but each day they cleaned up after themselves. Their tiling work is awesome! They took our vision and brought it to life. We will definitely be reaching out to Erick for future projects and would highly recommend him to anyone that is looking start a project.

Tim and his crew did a great job on our basement finishing! Tim was very knowledgeable throughout the process and was very accommodating to with our busy schedules. He and his crew were very trustworthy as most of the time they worked in the house while we were away. Special thanks to Neil and the other gentleman on the team. They were always very friendly and responsive when I needed anything or had a question. My only negative, hence 4 stars, would be that I would have liked to only have had Tim as the sole POC versus us having to deal one on one with the other contractors on the project as it made for a lot of calls and additional tasks to manage. This was our first project so we were not really sure how everything worked. All in all, they did a great job and made our space beautiful! We would definitely use again for any project!

I hired Melvin and his workers to demolish an old deck and hot tub. He was on time and finished the job when he said he would. They left the area with nothing but dirt and hauled away everything. He did exactly what he said he was, returned my messages and was very professional the entire time. I would definitely hire him again.

Edgar has consistently provided excellent value and well crafted electrical work for our Owner / Builder new home construction project. He has roughed-in, and set outlets, switches and fixtures. Post construction he has wired a Generac whole house standby generator and added several additional circuits for me. Sometimes it is frustrating dealing with small sub-contractors; not with Edgar- he is always on time, always efficient, always great quality work. We couldn't recommend him more highly. "After some miscommunication on the initially agreed upon time, Tim called me this following morning to apologize and see if they could come by to move the furniture that day. I wasn't available to answer the call and tried to call him back. While the phone was ringing, my doorbell rang. It was Tim and a helper asking if he could move the furniture. I very much appreciated his initiative and willingness to apologize. (It's incredible how many contractors we've had who lack both.) They moved our items upstairs with minimal damage. It wasn't an easy task to get our couch up the stairs and around the turn, but he took great care and breaks when needed, which is exactly what we wanted."

If you can accept no adherence to schedule and lack of punctuality, this is a great contractor. He missed 2 appointments and was late to a third, but he also provided a very competitive written estimate, and promptly scheduled time to complete the job. The jury is still out on whether his work will be of satisfactory quality.

Jenrri did an absolutely fantastic job with installing a backsplash in my kitchen! We exchanged messages on Thumbtack, with pictures of the project area, he gave me a firm price and time to complete the job. We arranged for him to come by to physically look at the area; he specified what additional materials to buy (we searched exactly what was needed on the Home Depot app, so I did not have to waste time guessing the correct variation). He showed up at the planned times, and is very meticulous and detail-oriented. I selected an arabesque tile pattern, which is more time and labor intensive than a standard subway tile pattern. Jenrri took great care in cutting the right size tile for the electrical outlets and borders. His attention to detail shows in the finished product (he extended the tile above the visible space, so the tiling looks smooth). I am very impressed with his work and will ask him back for any other work around my apartment!! Thank you, Jenrri!

Jorge did an awesome job on my staining and painting project. Bonus points for working around the other contractors who were putting in pavers and fixing concrete work on site. I feel I got an excellent price. And finally I was impressed that he kept me updated. He did everything right. Great job. Will call again.

Cristian and Luis were responsive, reliable and hard-working. I had to have a bathroom remodel finished very quickly and they were able to start immediately and completed quickly. Also, the estimate was very reasonable. I had asked for some extra work and they were accommodating and when the total bill came, they were spot on with the actual cost compared to the estimate and the extra work added to the bill was very fair. It’s difficult to find a good dependable handyman that you feel comfortable working with, and I found this in C&L. I already have other projects with which, I will be asking for their services. The work they did for me was drywall and tiling of floor and walls of a full bathroom and extensive drywall repairs in other areas of the home.

Arnold stepped in when my original contractor fell ill right after he demo'd the kitchen. Arnold did a fantastic job with a complete kitchen rehab and installing a new bathroom. It was a big project, which included installing heated floors, new hardwood floors, a new staircase, detailed cabinet assembly, recessed lighting, painting, cabinet lighting, installing new electric and much more. I cannot believe how lucky I was to hook up with Arnold. I 200% recommend him. He was extremely reliable, and he always answered my calls, texts and emails. He is a good person, and I now consider him a friend. Thank you Arnold and your team for a job well done. I love my kitchen and bathroom.

I used K&A months prior for interior painting. They did a good job, and after finding difficulty finding the right company to replace my floor, I called K&A. They did a very professional job. I was concerned at first because my experience with other contractors made me realize that I have to watch them to ensure the work gets done properly. However with Erika, She does treat the work like it’s her own house. I really appreciate that and the outcome. I would definitely recommend K&A as a trustworthy contractor.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.
